Late-Victorian Girls and their Manuscript Magazines: Girlhood and Textual Transformation in Britain, 1860-1900

by Lois Burke

This open access book presents fresh archival evidence to explore the underexamined manuscript cultures of girls living in Britain in the late nineteenth century. Girls were keen writers during this period, which witnessed Golden Ages of children's literature and journalism, as well as major developments in proto feminism. Girl writers were particularly prolific in the writing of manuscript magazines. These were handmade magazines in which the contributors were also the readers and subscribers. This book presents three case study chapters exploring manuscript magazines which were created and exchanged amongst girl-led writing groups and within families, and references many other examples of manuscript magazine cultures from the late-Victorian period. It argues that strategies of transformative writing—namely appropriating literary texts—often characterized girls' contributions to manuscript magazines.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little Town Where History and Literature Meet

by John Miller

De Smet, SD is where Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up and the setting of 5 of her books. Here is a history comparing the town in Laura's books to the real town. (front flap) As Laura Ingalls Wilder anticipated, her widely loved stories of her prairie childhood have become much more than a nostalgic blend of myth, memories, and autobiography. As John Miller reveals, they have much to tell us about the historical realities of day-to-day living and attitudes in the nineteenth century. History and literature are closely intertwined, Miller contends. Here he illustrates how Wilder's novels enhance our understanding of history and how, simultaneously, a historical perspective framed Wilder's fiction. He shows how Wilder interwove content and form to produce a sentimental and compelling yet nuanced and believable picture of family life on the agricultural frontier.

Laura Ingalls Wilder: American Writer on the Prairie (Routledge Historical Americans)

by Sallie Ketcham

Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote stories that have defined the American frontier for generations of readers. As both author and character in her own books, she became one of the most famous figures in American children’s literature. Her famous Little House on the Prairie series, based on her childhood in Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, and South Dakota, blended memoir and fiction into a vivid depiction of nineteenth-century settler life that continues to shape many Americans’ understanding of the country’s past. Poised between fiction and fact, literature and history, Wilder’s life is a fascinating window on the American West. Placing Wilder’s life and work in historical context, and including previously unpublished material from the Wilder archives, Sallie Ketcham introduces students to domestic frontier life, the conflict between Native Americans and infringing white populations, and the West in public memory and imagination.

Le Onde della Vita

by Lina Moaca

(Letteratura sui tacchi)

by Pablo Perel

by Jen Minkman
