Holt Elements of Literature, Second Course [Grade 8]
by Kylene BeersPlot is the chain of related events that tells us what happens in a story. When a plot is well mapped out, it hooks us and we say we can't put the story down. The "hook" of the plot, the part that grabs us and keeps us reading, is usually a conflict, or problem faced by a character. The conflict might be a struggle with another character or with a force of nature, such as a tornado. We become curious and want to learn how the conflict is resolved, in other words, how the story turns out.
