Film Genere Holywood And Beyond

by Barry Langford

The overall approach of Film Genre: Hollywood and Beyond situates genres in their historical - primarily, cultural and (film) industrial contexts; the overarching context of the book is the transition from the ‘classical’ Hollywood system to a ‘post-classical’ mode that extends to the present day. In making this separation, I neither explicitly challenge nor endorse arguments about the extent to which ‘post-classical’ Hollywood represents a qualita¬tively different set of visual stylistics in Hollywood film.

Twelfth Night

by William Shakespeare: Edited by Google books

In this edition of Shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or gramMar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in the appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpre¬tative rather than the matter-of-fact order of scholar¬ship. ?sthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points of view from which the analysis of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be

Considerable space is given to explaining and illustrating basic concepts such as curve, arc length, surface, fundamental forms; covariant and contravariant vectors; covariant, contravariant and mixed tensors, etc.
Interesting problems are included and complete solutions are given at the end of the book, together with a list of the more important formulae. History of Philosophy

by Frederick Copleston S. J.

Conceived originally as a serious presentation of the development of philosophy for Catholic seminary students, Frederick Copleston's nine-volume A History Of Philosophy has journeyed far beyond the modest purpose of its author to universal acclaim as the best history of philosophy in English.

Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit of immense erudition who once tangled with A.J. Ayer in a fabled debate about the existence of God and the possibility of metaphysics, knew that seminary students were fed a woefully inadequate diet of theses and proofs, and that their familiarity with most of history's great thinkers was reduced to simplistic caricatures. Copleston set out to redress the wrong by writing a complete history of Western Philosophy, one crackling with incident an intellectual excitement - and one that gives full place to each thinker, presenting his thought in a beautifully rounded manner and showing his links to those who went before and to those who came after him.

The Art of Dramatic Writing: Its Basis in the Creative Interpretation of Human Motives

by Lajos Egri

Learn the basic techniques every successful playwright knows Among the many "how-to" playwriting books that have appeared over the years, there have been few that attempt to analyze the mysteries of play construction. Lajos Egri's classic, The Art of Dramatic Writing, does just that, with instruction that can be applied equally well to a short story, novel, or screenplay. Examining a play from the inside out, Egri starts with the heart of any drama: its characters. All good dramatic writing hinges on people and their relationships, which serve to move the story forward and give it life, as well as an understanding of human motives -- why people act the way that they do. Using examples from everything from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, Egri shows how it is essential for the author to have a basic premise -- a thesis, demonstrated in terms of human behavior -- and to develop the dramatic conflict on the basis of that behavior. Using Egri's ABCs of premise, character, and conflict, The Art of Dramatic Writing is a direct, jargon-free approach to the problem of achieving truth in writing.

Calculus On Manifolds

by Michael Spivak

This little book is especially concerned with those portions of "advanced calculus" in which the subtlety of the concepts and methods makes rigor difficult to attain at an elementary level. The approach taken here uses elementary versions of modern methods found in sophisticated mathematics. The formal prerequisites include only a term of linear algebra, a nodding acquaintance with the notation of set theory, and a respectable first-year calculus course (one which at least mentions the least upper bound (sup) and greatest lower bound (inf) of a set of real numbers). Beyond this a certain (perhaps latent) rapport with abstract mathematics will be found almost essential.

Advisory: Bookshare has learned that this book offers only partial accessibility. We have kept it in the collection because it is useful for some of our members. To explore further access options with us, please contact us through the Book Quality link on the right sidebar. Colonial Empires

by Fieldhouse

The character and style of this book were largely dictated by two circumstances. First, because it is one volume of an integrated series - the Fischer Weltgeschichte - its length is strictly limited and the subject-matter has to be related to that of other volumes. As a result, the treatment of most issues is necessarily very brief and the balance between different colonies and periods of time does not always reflect their intrinsic importance

The Story of the Christian Church

by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut

No institution has spanned more centuries and more continents than the Christian church. Its dramatic story is one of bloodshed and peace, corruption and purity. Here Dr. Hurlbut retells this story in an objective, concise, and clear style, emphasizing the spirit of the church, its growth and maturation, and the causes leading to historic events and their resulting influence. Accurate, up-to-date, and vividly presented, Hurlbut's Story of the Christian Church traces the six general periods of church history from A. D. 30 to the present day. A concluding section, covering the period since Dr. Hurlbut's death, has been added in this revised edition, thus giving the reader a complete, easily understood overview of the Christian church. Designed for two audiences, this book contains outlines and references in the margins to aid the student or teacher along with a continuous narrative and numerous illustrations for the general reader. It is ideal for Sunday school use, since it includes suggested outlines and review questions for each chapter at the end of the book.

Introduction to Differential Geometry and Riemannian Geometry (Mathematical Expositions #16)

by Erwin Kreyszig

This book provides an introduction to the differential geometry of curves and surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space and to n-dimensional Riemannian geometry. Based on Kreyszig's earlier book Differential Geometry, it is presented in a simple and understandable manner with many examples illustrating the ideas, methods, and results.

Among the topics covered are vector and tensor algebra, the theory of surfaces, the formulae of Weingarten and Gauss, geodesics, mappings of surfaces and their applications, and global problems. A thorough investigation of Reimannian manifolds is made, including the theory of hypersurfaces.
Interesting problems are provided and complete solutions are given at the end of the book together with a list of the more important formulae. Flap Your Wings (Beginner Books(R))

by P. D. Eastman

When a strange egg appears in their nest, Mr. and Mrs. Bird kindly take it upon themselves to raise the "baby bird" inside. But when the egg hatches, the Birds are in for a big surprise--"Junior" is the oddest-looking baby bird they've ever seen--with big, longjawsfull of teeth and an appetite to match. In fact, he looks more like a babyalligatorthan a baby bird! Nevertheless, the devoted Birds run themselves ragged feeding Junior until he gets so big, he must leave the nest or it will collapse underneath him. But how can Junior fly without wings? To the delight of the Birds--and readers!--the dilemma is solved when Junior takes off from a branch overlooking a pond.

Hall Of Fame

by EDITED BY DAVID HORSBURGH Notes exercises by MEERA SHENOY

Students who come to the PUC classes of our Universities, if they are to make the rapid improvement in English which so many academic disciplines of today demand, need plenty of reading material. Such material should be written with two-main aims: it should be interesting, and it should be comprehensible. This book has been produced to provide such material. The book contains short accounts of the lives or episodes from the lives, of seven men and one woman who, by their qualities of mind and heart, have presented an imperishable example of what man is capable of in terms of the great human values. Of the men, two are from India and one each from Greece, Germany, France, Russia and America; and the woman is probably the greatest that France has ever produced. Unfortunately the lives of great men are often presented as a series of dull facts. This book tries to avoid dullness and to create for the reader, through conversation and dramatised anecdote, the essential flavour of their greatness.

Introduction To Commutative Algebra

by Michael Atiyah I. G. Macdonald

This book grew out of a course of lectures given to third year undergraduates at Oxford University and it has the modest aim of producing a rapid introduction to the subject. It is designed to be read by students who have had a first elementary course in general algebra. On the other hand, it is not intended as a substitute for the more voluminous tracts such as Zariski-Samuel or Bourbaki. We have concentrated on certain central topics, and large areas, such as field theory, are not touched. In content we cover rather more ground than Northcott and our treatment is substantially different in that, following the modern trend, we put more emphasis on modules and localization.
