A Lifetime of Seasons: The Best of Christopher Lloyd

by Christopher Lloyd

'He was the best informed, liveliest and most innovative gardening writer of our times' GUARDIAN'Infuriating, irascible ... a brilliant gardener and a brilliant writer' Monty Don, ObserverChristo Lloyd was recognised as one of the foremost gardeners and garden writers of the 20th century. Here, for the first time, is the definitive collection of his best, most informative, and so often amusing, garden writing.Christo on gardening: Ours, in its humble way, is an art as well as a craft. At the same time it keeps us in touch with the earth, the seasons, and with that complex of interrelated forces both animate and inanimate which we call nature. It is a humanizing occupation. On weeding:Many gardeners will agree that hand-weeding is not the terrible drudgery that it is often made out to be. Some people find in it a kind of soothing monotony. It leaves their minds free to develop the plot for their next novel or to perfect the brilliant repartee with which they should have encountered a relative's latest example of unreasonableness.

Light After Loss: A Spiritual Guide For Comfort, Hope, And Healing

by Ashley Davis Bush

From the office of a seasoned grief counselor, this book is an essential guide to grief. It shines a light into the darkness and illuminates the lifelong journey of integrating loss into life. It is a spiritual companion to higher healing that offers a shift, a redirection from pain and suffering to the sacred qualities of compassion, love, connection, gratitude, and transformation. This book takes Ashley Davis Bush&’s seminal Transcending Loss grief model and elevates it to a new level by providing a light-filled lens with which to process and metabolize loss. Bush describes a dimension of higher healing which provides an essential balm to the shattered heart. She will lead you to a broad experience of support, to a source of light within and beyond the self that is essential to a healthy grieving process. A guide on your journey from shock to transcendence, this book shows you how Love, Connection, Compassion, Faith, and Transcendenceorient and soothe a broken spirit. At the end of each chapter, you will be introduced to five specific &“Light-Shift Practices&” that integrate the chapter&’s concepts and facilitate the healing process. Grieving is a universal yet disorienting and devastating experience. But like the ancient Japanese art form of kintsugi which repairs broken pottery with golden lacquer, grief is healed by filling the cracks in your life with light, creating beauty from brokenness. Embracing a higher perspective makes the journey more bearable, the experience more meaningful, and the future more expansive.

Light Dragoons: The Making of a Regiment

by Allan Mallinson

Although only formed in December 1992, The Light Dragoons look back to a history that began in the days of the first Jacobite rebellion. In 1922 a reduction in the Armys strength saw the amalgamation of four regiments of Hussars into the 13th/18th Hussars and the 15th/19th Hussars. Now they too have been amalgamated, with a name that reverts to the titles of the four original regiments in the eighteenth century. Allan Mallinson, the novelist and a former commanding officer of the 13th/18th Hussars, not only follows with admirable clarity and dexterity the fortunes of The Light Dragoons predecessors in this new edition, but describes the activities of the new regiment up to the minute. It is a crowded canvas which reflects much of the last two hundred and seventy years of British history. No campaign of significance has been fought in that time without the participation of one or more of the Regiments. Three, for instance, fought in the Peninsula, one in the Crimea and three in South Africa. In the twentieth century they gained fresh honours in both World Wars and, since 1945, have been fully involved in Britains withdrawal from Empire, the Cold War, United Nations peacekeeping and Iraq and Afghanistan. The new Postscript gives the reader a fine account of what wars in Bosnia and Iraq have involved for the Regiment and the men who serve in it and this updated history is a superb snapshot of life in war and peace for a British armoured reconnaissance regiment. Light Dragoons takes its place among the classics of this genre such as Sir Arthur Bryants Jackets of Green and Rudyard Kiplings account of the Irish Guards in the Great War.

Lighting Dance: A Study of Technical, Philosophical, and Psychological Shadows

by Flaviana Xavier Sampaio

Lighting Dance pioneers the discussion of the ability of lighting design to foreground shadow in dance performances. Through a series of experiments integrating light, shadow, and improvised dance movement, it highlights and analyses what it advances as an innovative expression of shadow in dance as an alternative to more conventional approaches to lighting design. Different art forms, such as painting, film, and dance pieces from Loie Fuller, the Russell Maliphant Dance Company, Elevenplay, Pilobolus, and the Tao Dance Theater served to inspire and contextualise the study. From lighting to psychology, from reviews to academic books, shadows are examined as a symbolic and manipulative entity. The book also presents the dance solo Sombreiro, which was created to echo the experiments with light, shadow, and movement aligned to an interpretation of cultural shadow (Jung 1954, in Samuels, Shorter, and Plaut 1986; Casement 2006; Ramos 2004; Stein 2004; and others). The historical development of lighting within dance practices is also outlined, providing a valuable resource for lighting designers, dance practitioners, and theatre goers interested in the visuality of dance performances.

Like a Yeti Catching Marmots

by Josh Bartok Pema Tsewang Shastri

The Yeti, or Dremo in Tibetan, is a dim-witted mythical beast said to feed only on marmots. It sees a marmot, grabs the hapless creature, and then sits on it - saving the delicious morsel for later. And then the Yeti sees another marmot and leaps up to snatch it while the first marmot makes a quick break for freedom. An image of bumbling, foolish effort. This enchanting little book contains 108 traditional Tibetan proverbs - conveying the wit and wisdom of one of the world's most unique cultures. The proverbs appear in English and Tibetan script, along with a brief explanation of how and when to use each saying. Often funny and wise, these proverbs always remind us of our experiences in a natural and meaningful way.
