Tolstoy (Routledge Library Editions: Tolstoy and Dostoevsky)

by Ernest Joseph Simmons

Tolstoy’s fame as one of the world’s greatest novelists has never been in doubt, but the importance of his views on the social, moral and religious issues of his time is not so widely recognised. This study, first published in 1973, presents an introduction to the historical and cultural background of Tolstoy’s lifetime, then going on to consider the major events of his developing personality as a writer and reformer. As well as considering the famous novels and literary criticism, Simmons treats his educational theories and practice, famine relief work, spiritual crises and religious, social and moral beliefs, as reflected in controversial writings such as What I Believe, What Then Must We Do? and The Kingdom of God Is Within You. He also investigates Tolstoy’s involvement in government, war and revolution, and the relevance of his reformist views in the contemporary world.

Easy Ways to Enlarge Your German Vocabulary

by Karl A. Schmidt

Although there are many books that cover German grammar and syntax, remarkably little modern attention has been given to the practical problem of acquiring a German vocabulary. Yet building up or enlarging a basic vocabulary can be one of the most time-consuming and most difficult tasks for the student, if he approaches it by the conventional method of word lists or reading notes. As the present book, by Karl A. Schmidt, Assistant Professor of German at the University of San Francisco, shows, there are modern techniques for building vocabulary efficiently.Professor Schmidt's work builds upon the close relationship of German to English, as well as upon the easy and rational processes that are used in German for word formation. Cognates and words of common foreign origin between English and German are covered, as well as the creation of new words by compounding, by affixes, and other modifications. Concentrating on useful, modern vocabulary, this book is remarkably clear in its presentation and will (in addition to its specific considerations) leave the reader with a sense of the patterns of word formation, so that he can go farther on his own. This book can be used as a supplement to any language course, for self-study by a student who has already had grammatical basics, or as a refresher. The extensive practice examples that are included (with a key at the rear) will enable the reader both to increase his knowledge and to check his progress.

Latin Literature of the Fourth Century (Routledge Revivals)

by J. W. Binns

This volume, offering an insight into the literary world of Rome in the fourth century AD, reflects an increased interest in the writers of the 150 years before the collapse of the Western Empire, who have long been over-shadowed by the pre-eminence accorded since the eighteenth century to the Golden and Silver ages. Among the writers examined are Ausonius, the poet, Imperial official and tutor to Gratian; Claudian, the last major ‘classical’ poet; Prudentius, and Paulinus of Nola, two of the founders of Christian Latin poetry; Symmachus, the letter writer and supporter of die-hard paganism; and St. Augustine, whose influence on Christian thought and the Middle Ages is incalculable. These essays consider how such writers responded to a world where vitality was ebbing from the old forms of political life, religion and literature, giving way to new institutions, modes of life and horizons of reflection.

Seneca (Routledge Revivals)

by Costa C.D.N.

This volume, first published in 1974, offers a selection of modern perspectives on Seneca, covering his prose treatises, his letters and his tragedies. For centuries literary and philosophical circles had to take Seneca seriously, even if they could not always respect him, and although his reputation has fluctuated, there has been a revival of interest in his achievements. Accordingly, a large part of Seneca is devoted to this later influence at the deliberate expense of not covering all of Seneca’s less familiar works. The Moral Essays, the tragedies and the letters to Lucilius are examined by the contributors, who also discuss Seneca’s philosophical influence and the Senecan heritage in English and neo-Latin literature. Each essay contains insightful and sometimes controversial material, which is of value to the specialist as well as to students of Latin, English or French literature.

The Latin Poetry of English Poets (Routledge Revivals)

by J. W. Binns

Thomas Campion, Milton, Crashaw, Herbert, Bourne, Walter Savage Landor – all these poets, between them spanning the period from the Elizabethan to the Victorian age, wrote a substantial body of Latin verse in addition to their better-known English poetry, representing part of the vast and almost unexplored body of Neo-Latin literature which appealed to an international reading public throughout Europe. The Latin poetry of these English poets is of particular interest when it is set against the background of their writings in their own tongue: this collection examines the extent to which our judgment of a poet is altered by an awareness of his Latin works. In some we find prefigured themes which were later treated in their English verse; others wrote Latin poetry throughout their lives and give evidence in their Latin poetry of interests which do not find expression in their English compositions. This volume is a valuable resource for students of both Latin and English literature.

A Dictionary of Rhyming Slang

by Julian Franklyn

This re-issue of Julian Franklyn's classic dictionary not only defines these expressions but also explains their origin and history. An introductory essay examines the roots and development of rhyming slang. Although many people assume that rhyming slang is exclusively Cockney, Franklyn illustrates how it is common to Australian and Americn dialects. From the unlikely to the bizarre, the 1,500 entries both entertain and enlighten. Cartoons enliven a reference section which combines linguistic detail and cultural analysis. Whether reading the dictionary from cover to cover, or dipping into it as a reference tool, linguists and students of popular culture will find it the definitive source of information on rhyming slang.

Science and the Human Comedy: Natural Philosophy in French Literature from Rabelais to Maupertuis

by Harcourt Brown

New scientific theories, methods, and objectives exert subtle and often unnoticed influences on literary creation. The developments of the attitudes and aspirations of French scientists between the Renaissance and the Revolution and the impact of these new outlooks on French literature form the theme of this book by an authority in the interdisciplinary treatment of science and literature. Implicit in the author's exploration is the view that in the development of the scientific revolution there was no overall design, but rather random growth; human beings turn up at various moments, some of them appropriately, some of them not, so that the record is in part a story of successful endeavour, in part a comedy little short of farce. in the historical panorama of this book, four auhors, each known for his ironic, even comic, insight into the human condition, are chosen to illustrate the theme. As men of letters, Rabelais and Voltaire exhibit well-defined scientific interests, while Pascal and Maupertuis were drawn from their scientific vocations into the discussion of ideas in literary forms. Consideration of their similarities and differences suggested the title, Science and the Human Comedy. This work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the historical and cultural conditions accompanying the advancement of science in a critical period, as well as of several ways in which the process was reflected, sometimes directly, more often indirectly, in literature.
