"Sail" leading to distant goals: A brief history of the most famous school newspaper of Novorossiysk

by Sergey Konyashin

The documentary-memoir story "Sail leading to distant goals" is devoted to the history of the appearance, formation and development of the Novorossiysk school newspaper "Parus (Sail)", published from 1992 to 2015, as well as the enormous influence that this print edition had on the children's press in the city of Novorossiysk and far beyond. The book was written by Sergey Konyashin, a former cadet of "Parus", twice the "Young Journalist of the Year" in Novorossiysk (1999 and 2000), whose creative path into the great Russian journalism and diplomacy began from the pages of this — now largely legendary — children's print edition. Sergey Konyashin's memoirs will be of interest primarily to those who seek to learn more about the history of the Novorossiysk school press, its place in the development of the city's additional education system, as well as in the fate of some gifted Novorossiysk children.

"So What Are You Going to Do with That?": Finding Careers Outside Academia

by Susan Basalla Maggie Debelius

Graduate schools churn out tens of thousands of PhDs and MAs every year. Yet more than half of all college courses are taught by adjunct faculty, which means that the chances of an academic landing a tenure-track job seem only to shrink as student loan and credit card debts grow. What’s a frustrated would-be scholar to do? Can she really leave academia? Can a job outside the academy really be rewarding? And could anyone want to hire a grad-school refugee? In this third edition of “So What Are You Going to Do with That?”, thoroughly revised with new advice for students in the sciences, Susan Basalla and Maggie Debelius—PhDs themselves—answer all those questions with a resounding “Yes!” A witty, accessible guide full of concrete advice for anyone contemplating the jump from scholarship to the outside world, “So What Are You Going to Do with That?” covers topics ranging from career counseling to interview etiquette to how to translate skills learned in the academy into terms an employer can understand and appreciate. Packed with examples and stories from real people who have successfully made this daunting—but potentially rewarding—transition, and written with a deep understanding of both the joys and difficulties of the academic life, this fully updated guide will be indispensable for any graduate student or professor who has ever glanced at his or her CV, flipped through the want ads, and wondered, “What if?”

"Son of Man": Early Jewish Literature

by Richard Baukham

Who is the &“Son of Man&”?   In pre-Christian Jewish writings, &“Son of Man&” was not a title, and it certainly did not indicate divinity. It was simply an expression for a man. Yet the term has held considerable interest among scholars of Christology for its use in describing Jesus in the gospels. And among those studying messianism in Second Temple Judaism, consensus about the valences of &“Son of Man&” in Scripture remains elusive. In the first volume of this landmark study, Richard Bauckham pushes the conversation forward, explicating the phrase &“Son of Man&” as it appears in Jewish interpretations of the book of Daniel and in the apocryphal book of 1 Enoch. With philological precision and sensitivity to his sources, Bauckham attunes us to the realities of early Jewish eschatology. Thorough and comprehensive, &“Son of Man,&” vol. 1, offers scholars a solid basis for understanding the context of the messiah in the centuries leading up to Jesus. Along with the forthcoming second volume, which parses the meaning of &“Son of Man&” in the Gospels, Bauckham&’s work is essential for understanding one of the most widely used yet misunderstood phrases in the Bible.

"Step By Step" Workbook

by Laura Stoll

To the Teacher... This workbook has been prepared especially for sixth graders in our parochial schools, to be used with the textbook STEP BY STEP. In addition to previous revisions, we again made some changes in 2020 to improve clarity on exercises that have at times been confusing to students. Word Studies are also added throughout the workbook on words listed after the stories in the textbook. Each story and poem can be used as a lesson by itself or combined however you wish. You will notice there are nine units with a review after each one. The tests that go with this workbook were designed with a six-week grading period in mind, so they do not necessarily come at the end of a unit. We tried to clearly mark where the tests come in so as to avoid confusion. The tests are available separately at the address below.

"Strangers" of the Academy: Asian Women Scholars in Higher Education

by Guofang Li Gulbahar H. Beckett

No less than other minorities, Asian women scholars are confronted with racial discrimination and stereotyping as well as disrespect for their research, teaching, and leadership, and are underrepresented in academia. In the face of such barriers, many Asian female scholars have developed strategies to survive and thrive. This book is among the first to examine their lived experience in Western academic discourses. It addresses the socio-cultural, political, academic, and personal issues that Asian female scholars encounter in higher education. The contributors to this book include first- and second-generation immigrants who are teachers and researchers in higher education and who come from a wide range of Asian nations and backgrounds. They here combine new research and personal narratives to explore the intersecting layers of relationships that impact their lives—language, culture, academic discourses, gender, class, generation, and race. The book is replete with the richness and complexity of these scholars’ struggles and triumphs in their professional and personal realms. This powerful and engaging volume:* Examines and celebrates the struggles and triumphs that Asian female scholars experience as they try to “make it” in academic environments that may differ sharply from the culture of their countries of origin; * Highlights the unique contributions the authors have made to research, theory, and the profession;* Establishes the authors’ claim to visibility and a voice for themselves and more generally for Asian women in the academy; * Opens a dialogue on these critical issues by sharing the academic and personal experiences of senior and junior scholars alike; and * Contributes to the on-going discussion on issues pertinent to the status of minority female scholars in higher education.

"These Kids Are Out of Control": Why We Must Reimagine "Classroom Management" for Equity

by Dr H. Richard Milner Heather B. Cunningham Lori Delale-O'Connor Erica Gold Kestenberg

Today’s classrooms reimagined If you’re looking for a book on how to “control” your students, this isn’t it! Instead, this is a book on what classroom learning could be if we aspire to co-create more culturally responsive and equitable environments—environments that are safe, affirming, learner-centered, intellectually challenging, and engaging. If we create the kind of places where our students want to be . . . A critically important resource for teachers and administrators alike, “These Kids Are Out of Control” details the specific practices, tools, beliefs, dispositions, and mindsets that are essential to better serving the complex needs of our diverse learners, especially our marginalized students. Gain expert insight on: What it means to be culturally responsive in today’s classroom environments, even in schools at large How to decide what to teach, understand the curriculum, build relationships in and outside of school, and assess student development and learning The four best practices for building a classroom culture that is both nurturing and rigorous, and where all students are seen, heard, and respected Alternatives to punitive disciplinary action that too often sustains the cradle-to-prison pipeline Classroom “management” takes care of itself when you engage students, help them see links and alignment of the curriculum to their lives, build on and from student identity and culture, and recognize the many ways instructional practices can shift. “These Kids Are Out of Control” is your opportunity to get started right away!

"When You Were Gentiles"

by Cavan W Concannon

Cavan W. Concannon makes a significant contribution to Pauline studies by imagining the responses of the Corinthians to Paul's letters. Based on surviving written materials and archaeological research, this book offers a textured portrait of the ancient Corinthians with whom Paul conversed, argued, debated, and partnered, focusing on issues of ethnicity, civic identity, politics, and empire. In doing so, the author provides readers a unique opportunity to assess anew, and imagine possibilities beyond, Paul's complicated legacy in shaping Western notions of race, ethnicity, and religion.

"Why Won't You Just Tell Us the Answer?": Teaching Historical Thinking in Grades 7-12

by Bruce Lesh

Every major measure of students' historical understanding since 1917 has demonstrated that students do not retain, understand, or enjoy their school experiences with history. Bruce Lesh believes that this is due to the way we teach historylecture and memorization. Over the last fifteen years, Bruce has refined a method of teaching history that mirrors the process used by historians, where students are taught to ask questions of evidence and develop historical explanations. And now in his new book 'Why Won't You Just Tell Us the Answer? he shows teachers how to successfully implement his methods in the classroom. Students may think they want to be given the answer. Yet, when they are actively engaged in investigating the pastthe way professional historians dothey find that history class is not about the boring memorization of names, dates, and facts. Instead, it's challenging fun. Historical study that centers on a question, where students gather a variety of historical sources and then develop and defend their answers to that question, allows students to become actual historians immersed in an interpretive study of the past. Each chapter focuses on a key concept in understanding history and then offers a sample unit on how the concept can be taught. Readers will learn about the following:, Exploring Text, Subtext, and Context: President Theodore Roosevelt and the Panama Canal, Chronological Thinking and Causality: The Rail Strike of 1877, Multiple Perspectives: The Bonus March of 1932, Continuity and Change Over Time: Custer's Last Stand, Historical Significance: The Civil Rights Movement, Historical Empathy: The Truman-MacArthur Debate By the end of the book, teachers will have learned how to teach history via a lens of interpretive questions and interrogative evidence that allows both student and teacher to develop evidence-based answers to history's greatest questions.

#BlackEducatorsMatter: The Experiences of Black Teachers in an Anti-Black World (Race and Education)

by Kofi Lomotey

A stirring testament to the realities of Black teaching and learning in the United States and to Black educators' visions for the future

#EdJourney

by Grant Lichtman

Your formula for managing innovation and transforming learning #EdJourney: A Roadmap to the Future of Education is a refreshing change from the negativity so common in the world of education today. Over the course of a 3-month solo road trip across the United States, author Grant Lichtman discovered that there is much to be positive about in today's K-12 schools. Lichtman, one of the country's leading experts in educational innovation, interviewed over 600 teachers, administrators, students, parents, and trustees to find out what kind of innovations they're doing right--and how others can leverage their successes. Innovation in education takes hard work, planning, and cooperation. With examples from around the country and findings from the latest education research, #EdJourney maps out how administrators and teachers can embrace the innovation process that schools and learners need now. Today's 21st century education presents unique challenges and opportunities to students, and this is a trailblazing practical guide to making sure education is ready for the future. #EdJourney focuses on four key questions: What new learning strategies are the top schools implementing to prepare our students for their future rather than for our past? How do teachers and administrators manage transitions to new types of teaching and learning? What are the key obstacles to shifting away from the assembly line model of education? How can we all leverage the lessons of success from the most innovative schools? The concrete examples and advice in this book will help you bring innovation and educational design concepts into your school. #EdJourney goes beyond the theoretical need for change--by now a familiar topic to almost everyone--and takes a real-world approach to achieving transformative education in any school.

#FeesMustFall and Youth Mobilisation in South Africa: Reform or Revolution? (Routledge Contemporary South Africa)

by Musawenkosi W Ndlovu

This book examines the historical FeesMustFall (FMF) university student protests that took place in South Africa and shows how the enduring historical construction, representation and conceptualisation of South African youth (as typically radical and political) contributed to the (mis)interpretation of FMF protests, and led to a discourse on an African National Congress-toppling revolution. Arguing that the student protests were not the revolutionary movement they have been represented as, Ndlovu demonstrates that ideological divisions amongst the protestors, the declining economy, and reduced youth participation in the political public sphere cannot lead to a new revolution in South African politics. This book will be of interest to students and scholars interested in South African politics, higher education, democracy and protest movements.

#NeverAgain: A New Generation Draws the Line

by David Hogg Lauren Hogg

From two survivors of the Parkland, Florida, shooting comes a declaration for our times, and an in-depth look at the making of the #NeverAgain movement. <P><P> On February 14, 2018, seventeen-year-old David Hogg and his fourteen-year-old sister, Lauren, went to school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, like any normal Wednesday. That day, of course, the world changed. <P><P>By the next morning, with seventeen classmates and faculty dead, they had joined the leadership of a movement to save their own lives, and the lives of all other young people in America. <P><P>It's a leadership position they did not seek, and did not want--but events gave them no choice. <P><P>The morning after the massacre, David Hogg told CNN: "We're children. You guys are the adults. You need to take some action and play a role. Work together. Get over your politics and get something done." <P><P>This book is a manifesto for the movement begun that day, one that has already changed America--with voices of a new generation that are speaking truth to power, and are determined to succeed where their elders have failed. <P>With moral force and clarity, a new generation has made it clear that problems previously deemed unsolvable due to powerful lobbies and political cowardice will be theirs to solve. <P><P>Born just after Columbine and raised amid seemingly endless war and routine active shooter drills, this generation now says, Enough. This book is their statement of purpose, and the story of their lives. It is the essential guide to the #NeverAgain movement.
