In doing so, it re-examines the key concepts that underpin studies of masculinity, such as homophobia, homosociality and heteronormativity. Eat, Drink, Run.: How I Got Fit Without Going Too Mad

by Bryony Gordon

The new hilarious and inspirational memoir from Sunday Times no. 1 bestselling author Bryony Gordon.'A courageous account that will inspire us all - bloody brilliant' Fearne Cotton'An honest and damn funny book about daring to dream, about chafing and Vaseline, and running through the pain. I raced through it without getting a stitch' Matt Haig'The woman who made talking about your thinking not just acceptable but imperative' Daily TelegraphBryony Gordon was not a runner. A loafer, a dawdler, a drinker, a smoker, yes. A runner, no. But, as she recovered from the emotional rollercoaster of opening up her life in her mental health memoir MAD GIRL, she realised that there were things that might actually help her: getting outside, moving her body and talking to others who found life occasionally challenging. As she ran, she started to shake off the limitations that had always held her back and she saw she had actually imposed them on herself. Why couldn't she be a runner? In April 2017, Bryony Gordon ran all 26.2 miles of the London Marathon. In Eat, Drink, Run., we join her as she trains for this daunting task and rises to the challenge one step at the time. Of course, on top of the aching muscles and blistered feet, there's also the small matter of getting a certain royal to open up about his mental health. Through it all, Bryony shows us that extraordinary things can happen to everyone, no matter what life throws our way. What readers are saying about Eat, Drink, Run.:'One of the best things about this book is how Bryony manages to make you laugh, make you tearful, but ultimately hopeful about yourself and your own outlook on life and mental health''I laughed, I cried, I got inspired to run again''Bryony at her best by far! Honest, endearing, beautifully written. We all can relate in some way, if you are in doubt about how you feel, or indeed you are a person that says I can't - read this because you can, we all can'

Eat, Drink, Run.: How I Got Fit Without Going Too Mad

by Bryony Gordon

The new hilarious and inspirational memoir from Sunday Times no. 1 bestselling author Bryony Gordon. Bryony Gordon was not a runner. A loafer, a dawdler, a drinker, a smoker, yes. A runner, no. Yet somehow, as she began to recover from the emotional rollercoaster of laying her life bare in her mental health memoir MAD GIRL, she started to realise that getting outside, moving her body and talking to others for whom life was also an occasional challenge, might actually help her. Going for a run might not banish her sadness but at least it might show it that she was damn well trying to beat it, which is sometimes half the battle. As she began to run further she started to see the limitations she had imposed on her life more clearly. Why couldn't she be a runner? Or a bungee jumper? Or a deep sea diver? Maybe rather than sitting on the sofa watching the world go by, fulfilling your dreams was just about standing up and taking that first step. Maybe you can do it too. In April 2017, less than a year after she had weighed herself at over 16 stone but stepped off the scales and started training anyway, Bryony Gordon ran all 26 and 3/4 miles of the London Marathon. During this time she formed an unlikely bond with the royals, and even managed to convince one of them to speak openly in public for the first time about their own mental health. Here, in her new typically funny and hugely inspiring memoir, she shows us how extraordinary things can happen to us all, no matter what life throws at us, if we're just willing to keep going.

Eat Fat, Get Fit: How to Create Your Perfect Diet to Lose Weight, Heal Your Gut, and Have More Energy

by Kusha Karvandi

Discover the healthy power of fullness and flavor—in the important nutrient known as fat—in a guide to customizing your diet by the founder of Exerscribe. When you're trying to lose weight, it’s reasonable to want to lose body fat in specific areas. You want flat abs, a tighter tummy, leaner legs, or less flabby arms. But often you're told it just isn't possible. Nonsense! Kusha Karvandi has seen his clients get the results they want faster than ever with a customized approach—helping them become their own diet detective to find which foods work best for their body. Now he shares his discoveries so you can have the body and confidence you desire. The problem with the health and fitness industry is that it makes people think they’re just weak, and that the best way to achieve the body they want is to suck it up and push harder. Reality shows exhaust participants with hours of daily exercise and extremely low-calorie diets—but if more is better, why do the majority rebound and gain the weight back again and again? The truth is you’re stronger than you think. It isn’t that you somehow lack willpower or discipline; it’s that you just don’t have the right heuristics yet, which one of Karvandi’s mentors defined as the ability to make a decision based on limited amounts of information. The beauty of a heuristic is that it doesn’t drain your willpower like calorie-counting or fad diets may. In this book, he shows how to craft your own diet heuristic so you can make good eating decisions no matter where you are or how much willpower you have.Though everyone has their own individual natural set point when it comes to weight, our bodies were not programmed for obesity. But when we began eating unnatural, processed foods—vegetable oils and refined carbohydrates for example—we shifted our bodies toward fat storage rather than fat burn. By avoiding foods that force your body to store fat, you can lose weight quickly and easily—and create unstoppable momentum in your quest for fitness success.

Eat Your Feelings: The Food Mood Girl's Guide to Transforming Your Emotional Eating

by Lindsey Smith

Heather Crosby, Yum Universe: "Eat Your Feelings is a joyful, judgement-free zone and an opportunity to answer your body’s call in an informed and delicious way."Lindsey Smith, The Food Mood Girl, shows how you can transform your lifestyle by learning from your cravings and using mood-boosting ingredients every dayBlending together Lindsey Smith’s passion for health and wellness, food and humor, Eat Your Feelings is a humorous, lighthearted take on your typical diet book.Busy young professionals wrestle with long hours, an exhausting dating culture, and the stress of the modern world. As days whiz by, it’s normal to gravitate toward food—a quick slice of pizza, a chocolate bar, or a bag of chips—that fulfills a craving of the moment or gives a quick energy boost. And this impulse makes sense. Food gives us a sense of pleasure and joy. It can provide us with satisfaction and comfort. Food can awaken each of our senses to something new each time we eat. It gives us energy, and quite literally sustains life as we know it. It should be emotional. If you are feeling sad, stressed, exhausted, hangry, or bored, it’s comforting to eat dishes you love and crave. But Lindsey Smith shows how simple it is to make those same meals and snacks with mood-boosting ingredients that will physically nourish instead of processed foods. In Eat Your Feelings, Lindsey Smith, the Food Mood Girl, will look at ways to eat healthy food based on what people tend to crave the most during heightened emotional states, introducing recipes with crunchy, cheesy, creamy, sweet, and salty themes and drink alternatives for those who tend to chug soda or coffee when all worked up.It’s crucial to listen to your cravings: they are the gatekeepers that unlock the secrets to our unique bodies. But a major element of the Food Mood lifestyle is love, and revolutionizing the way you treat your body and your cravings will not only rid yourself of hanger pains but will also teach you how to listen and respond to your body with healthy ingredients and recipes.

Eating Ethically: Religion and Science for a Better Diet

by Jonathan K. Crane

Few activities are as essential to human flourishing as eating, and fewer still are as ethically fraught. Eating well is particularly confusing. We live amid excess, faced with conflicting recommendations, contradictory scientific studies, and complex moral, medical, and environmental consequences that influence our choices. A new eating strategy is urgently needed, one grounded in ethics, informed by biology, supported by philosophy and theology, and, ultimately, personally achievable.Eating Ethically argues persuasively for more adaptive eating practices. Drawing on religion, medicine, philosophy, cognitive science, art, ethics, and more, Jonathan K. Crane shows how distinguishing among the eater, the eaten, and the act of eating promotes a radical reorientation away from external cues and toward internal ones. This turn is vital for survival, according to classic philosophy on appetite and contemporary studies of satiety, metabolic science as well as metaphysics and religion. By intertwining ancient wisdom from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam with cutting-edge research, Crane concludes that ethical eating is a means to achieve both personal health and social cohesion. Grounded in science and tradition, Eating Ethically shows us what it truly means to eat well.

Eating Promiscuously: Adventures in the Future of Food

by James McWilliams

A bold and bracing argument for the complete reimagining of the human diet by the critically acclaimed author of Just Food The human practice of farming food has failed. There are 7,500 known varieties of domesticated apples; we regularly eat about five. Seventy–five percent of the world's food derives from five animals and twelve plants. Factory farmed meat is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions (about 14 percent, larger than transportation) and consumes 75 percent of the water in drought–prone regions such as the West. We are struck in a rut of limited choices, ad the vast majority of what we eat is detrimental to our health and the welfare of the planet. But what if we could eliminate agriculture as we know it? What if we could start over?James McWilliams's search for more expansive palate leads him to those who are actively exploring the fringes of what we can eat, a group of outliers seeking nutrition innovation outside the industrial food system. Here, we meet insect manufacturers, seaweed harvesters, road kill foragers, plant biologists, and oyster farmers who seek to open both our minds and our mouths—and to overturn our most basic assumptions about food, health, and ethics. Eating Promiscously generates hope for a more tasteful future—one in which we eat thousands of foods rather than dozens—with a new philosophy that could save both ourselves and our planet.

EFT for Meditation

by Charles B. Crenshaw Carol E. Crenshaw

EFT for Meditation, by lifelong meditators and certified EFT practitioners Carol E. Crenshaw and Charles B. Crenshaw Jr., combines EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) tapping with meditation for the enhancement of both modalities. Those who meditate know that many obstacles to calming the mind and relaxing the body arise during meditation. EFT can help clear those obstacles by releasing doubts, fears, and emotional disturbances, enabling the meditator to gain the full body-mind-spirit benefits of meditation. Likewise, meditation facilitates the EFT process by bringing the contents of the unconscious to the surface, exposing the limiting beliefs and disturbing memories that are hindering one’s living to one’s full potential. Identifying such obstacles to full potential is integral to EFT, and meditation can speed the process. EFT for Meditation, unique among books on meditation or on EFT, has equal value for advanced meditators, beginning meditators, those with advanced EFT skills, and those learning or new to EFT. Hundreds of studies show the healing benefits of meditation and EFT when practiced alone. Combining both produces a powerfully transformative effect.

Elements of Neurogeometry

by Jean Petitot

This book describes several mathematical models of the primary visual cortex, referring them to a vast ensemble of experimental data and putting forward an original geometrical model for its functional architecture, that is, the highly specific organization of its neural connections. The book spells out the geometrical algorithms implemented by this functional architecture, or put another way, the "neurogeometry" immanent in visual perception. Focusing on the neural origins of our spatial representations, it demonstrates three things: firstly, the way the visual neurons filter the optical signal is closely related to a wavelet analysis; secondly, the contact structure of the 1-jets of the curves in the plane (the retinal plane here) is implemented by the cortical functional architecture; and lastly, the visual algorithms for integrating contours from what may be rather incomplete sensory data can be modelled by the sub-Riemannian geometry associated with this contact structure. As such, it provides readers with the first systematic interpretation of a number of important neurophysiological observations in a well-defined mathematical framework. The book's neuromathematical exploration appeals to graduate students and researchers in integrative-functional-cognitive neuroscience with a good mathematical background, as well as those in applied mathematics with an interest in neurophysiology.
