Policymaking for Citizen Behavior Change: A Social Marketing Approach

by Nancy R. Lee

Social marketing is a discipline unfamiliar to many policymakers, often confused with the more frequently applied and studied fields of social media, behavioral economics, or social change. Social marketing is a growing field and methodology, however, that has been successfully applied to improve public health, prevent injuries, protect the environment, engage communities, and improve financial well-being. Policymaking for Citizen Behavior Change is designed to demonstrate the ways in which social marketing can be an effective and efficient tool to change citizens’ behavior, and how to advocate for and support its appropriate application. Providing a 10-Step Planning Model and examining a variety of social marketing cases and tools, including more than 40 success stories, Policymaking for Citizen Behavior Change is core reading for current policymakers, as well as all those studying and practicing social marketing, particularly in the public sector. It’s also worthwhile supplementary reading for those studying public policy, public administration, environmental justice, public health, and other programs on how to effect social change.

The Politics of Mass Digitization

by Nanna Bonde Thylstrup

A new examination of mass digitization as an emerging sociopolitical and sociotechnical phenomenon that alters the politics of cultural memory. Today, all of us with internet connections can access millions of digitized cultural artifacts from the comfort of our desks. Institutions and individuals add thousands of new cultural works to the digital sphere every day, creating new central nexuses of knowledge. How does this affect us politically and culturally? In this book, Nanna Bonde Thylstrup approaches mass digitization as an emerging sociopolitical and sociotechnical phenomenon, offering a new understanding of a defining concept of our time. Arguing that digitization has become a global cultural political project, Thylstrup draws on case studies of different forms of mass digitization—including Google Books, Europeana, and the shadow libraries Monoskop, lib.ru, and Ubuweb—to suggest a different approach to the study of digital cultural memory archives. She constructs a new theoretical framework for understanding mass digitization that focuses on notions of assemblage, infrastructure, and infrapolitics. Mass digitization does not consist merely of neutral technical processes, Thylstrup argues, but of distinct subpolitical processes that give rise to new kinds of archives and new ways of interacting with the artifacts they contain. With this book, she offers important and timely guidance on how mass digitization alters the politics of cultural memory to impact our relationship with the past and with one another.

Poset Codes: Partial Orders, Metrics and Coding Theory (SpringerBriefs in Mathematics)

by Marcelo Firer Marcelo Muniz S. Alves Jerry Anderson Pinheiro Luciano Panek

This book offers an organized and systematic approach to poset metrics and codes. Poset metrics, or metrics on a vector field determined by a partial order over a finite set, were first introduced in the mid-1990s by the mathematicians Richard A. Brualdi, Janine S. Graves and K. Mark Lawrence, and to date the relevant knowledge on this subject was spread over more than two hundred research papers. Poset metrics generalizes both the standard Hamming metric – the most important metric used in the context of coding theory – and the Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman metric, which is an ultrametric. Conceived to be as self-contained as possible, the book starts from basic concepts of coding theory and advances towards coding theory for poset metrics and generalizations. Each chapter includes a survey of the topic presented and a list of exercises, drawn in part from recently proven results. This work will appeal to researchers and graduate students alike, particularly those in the fields of Mathematics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, with an interest in discrete geometry and coding theory.
