Sexual Chemistry

by Lara V. Marks

Marks (former senior research fellow, history of 20th-century medicine, Imperial College) traces the origins of the pill to the Mexican yam plant, the American organic chemist, Russell Marker, and to scientists fleeing Europe for America during WWII. According to Marks, the novelty of the pill that it was separated in time from intercourse, that women could use it secretly, and that it molded perceptions that women were to take responsibility for birth control set the standards for forms of contraception that followed. The pill, one of the most investigated drugs in history, has been blamed as a creation by males to control females and use them as test subjects. But, says Marks, "This criticism not only ignores the historical context in which the pill was developed" but also the fact that "the research on the pill was both initiated and funded by women." Marks's research, partly based on new primary sources and oral interviews with key figures in the pill's history, yields an academic history with popular aspirations. Annotation c. Sexual Enhancers From Nature

by Dr Angela Fetzner

As you will read in this guidebook, it does not always have to be the blue pills, there are numerous mild yet safe herbal sexual enhancers. As you will read in this guidebook, it does not always have to be the blue pills, there are numerous mild yet safe herbal sexual enhancers. Many of the herbal sexual enhancers have been around for a long time in the often faraway countries of origin and their potency-enhancing effect has been used there for ages - but it is only gradually that these herbal sexual enhancers are also conquering the European market. Behind the desire for herbal sexual enhancers is, of course, also the desire not to have to "work off" the sexual act with a chemical pill, but deep inside us we carry the desire for a holistic sexuality - mysterious, unique, and mystical. And this is where love plants can start: These strengthen not only the potency, but awaken all the senses and can help to reduce stress and really relax again. If we take this to heart, our love life becomes (again) fulfilling and mysterious.

Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women's Love and Desire

by Lisa M. Diamond

Is love "blind" when it comes to gender? For women, it just might be. This unsettling and original book offers a radical new understanding of the context-dependent nature of female sexuality. Lisa Diamond argues that for some women, love and desire are not rigidly heterosexual or homosexual but fluid, changing as women move through the stages of life, various social groups, and, most important, different love relationships. This perspective clashes with traditional views of sexual orientation as a stable and fixed trait. But that view is based on research conducted almost entirely on men. Diamond is the first to study a large group of women over time. She has tracked one-hundred women for more than ten years as they have emerged from adolescence into adulthood. She summarizes their experiences and reviews research ranging from the psychology of love to the biology of sex differences. Sexual Fluidity offers moving first-person accounts of women falling in and out of love with men or women at different times in their lives. For some, gender becomes irrelevant: "I fall in love with the person, not the gender," say some respondents. Sexual Fluidity offers a new understanding of women's sexuality--and of the central importance of love.

Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives- Paperback

by Ann W. Burgess Robert K. Ressler John E. Douglas

Who are the men committing the rising number of serial homicides in the U.S. -- and why do they kill? The increase in these violent crimes over the past decade has created an urgent need for more and better information about these men: their crime scene patterns, violent acts, and above all, their motivations for committing these shocking and repetitive murders. This authoritative book represents the data, findings, and implications of a long-term F.B.I.-sponsored study of serial sex killers. Specially trained F.B.I. agents examined thirty-six convicted, incarcerated sexual murderers to build a valuable new bank of information which reveals the world of the serial sexual killer in both quantitative and qualitative detail. Data was obtained from official psychiatric and criminal records, court transcripts, and prison reports, as well as from extensive interviews with the offenders themselves. Featured in this book is detailed information on the F.B.I.'s recently developed Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP) and a sample of an actual VICAP Crime Analysis Report Form.

Sexual Interactions and HIV Risk: New Conceptual Perspectives in European Research (Social Aspects of AIDS)

by Luc Van Campenhoudt Mitchell Cohen Gustavo Guizzardi Dominique Hausser

How sexual risk is negotiated betwen partners is an area of considerable theoretical interest, with the dominant models of analysis focusing on individual decisions to engage in sexual behaviour and relying on "rational" decision-making. Leading European researchers offer a conceptual framework for analysis based on sexual interactions and their social context. Sexual Liberation, Socialist Style: Communist Czechoslovakia and the Science of Desire, 1945–1989

by Kateřina Lišková

This is the first account of sexual liberation in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Kateřina Lišková reveals how, in the case of Czechoslovakia, important aspects of sexuality were already liberated during the 1950s – abortion was legalized, homosexuality decriminalized, the female orgasm came into experts’ focus – and all that was underscored by an emphasis on gender equality. However, with the coming of Normalization, gender discourses reversed and women were to aspire to be caring mothers and docile wives. Good sex was to cement a lasting marriage and family. In contrast to the usual Western accounts highlighting the importance of social movements to sexual and gender freedom, here we discover, through the analysis of rich archival sources covering forty years of state socialism in Czechoslovakia, how experts, including sexologists, demographers and psychologists, advised the state on population development, marriage and the family to shape the most intimate aspects of people’s lives.

The Sexual Life of Catherine M. (Books That Changed the World)

by Catherine Millet

This New York Times–bestselling memoir of one woman&’s erotic escapades is &“brilliantly literate, utterly unabashed [and] consistently provocative&” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Since it was first published in France, The Sexual Life of Catherine M. has become a global literary phenomenon, hailed as one of the most important books on sexuality to be published in decades. Catherine Millet, the eminent editor of Art Press, has always led a free and active sexual life—from alfresco encounters in Italy to a gang bang on the edge of the Bois du Boulogne to a high-class orgy at a chichi Parisian restaurant. She has taken pleasure in the indistinct darkness of a peep show booth and under the probing light of a movie camera at an orgy. And in The Sexual Life of Catherine M., she recounts it all, from tender interludes with a lover to situations where her partners were so numerous and simultaneous they became indistinguishable parts of a collective body. A graphic account of physical gratification and a relentlessly honest look at the consequences—both good and bad—of sex stripped of sentiment, The Sexual Life of Catherine M. is &“truly a masterpiece of sexual exploration [that] will be a classic&” (The Hartford Courant).
