Forming Sleep: Representing Consciousness in the English Renaissance (Cultural Inquiries in English Literature, 1400–1700 #2)

by Nancy L. Simpson-Younger Margaret Simon

Forming Sleep asks how biocultural and literary dynamics act together to shape conceptions of sleep states in the early modern period. Engaging with poetry, drama, and prose largely written in English between 1580 and 1670, the essays in this collection highlight period discussions about how seemingly insentient states might actually enable self-formation.Looking at literary representations of sleep through formalism, biopolitics, Marxist theory, trauma theory, and affect theory, this volume envisions sleep states as a means of defining the human condition, both literally and metaphorically. The contributors examine a range of archival sources—including texts in early modern faculty psychology, printed and manuscript medical treatises and physicians’ notes, and printed ephemera on pathological sleep—through the lenses of both classical and contemporary philosophy. Essays apply these frameworks to genres such as drama, secular lyric, prose treatise, epic, and religious verse. Taken together, these essays demonstrate how early modern depictions of sleep shape, and are shaped by, the philosophical, medical, political, and, above all, formal discourses through which they are articulated. With this in mind, the question of form merges considerations of the physical and the poetic with the spiritual and the secular, highlighting the pervasiveness of sleep states as a means by which to reflect on the human condition. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume include Brian Chalk, Jennifer Lewin, Cassie Miura, Benjamin Parris, Giulio Pertile, N. Amos Rothschild, Garret A. Sullivan Jr., and Timothy A. Turner.

Fortune Telling and Predictions with Help of Ancient Slavic Runes. Runes that You Can Make Yourself

by Olga Kryuchkova Elena Kryuchkova

Runes - this is the pre-Christian writing of the Slavs (before Cyrillic). Runic writing existed among the ancient Slavs even before the start of their Christianization. A number of studies and historical sources put forward the version that initially the ancient Slavic priests owned the runes. A number of historians even put forward the version that the runes were given to the Slavs by the gods. With the help of the runes, the magi wrote spells, made various predictions and fortune-telling. The magi predicted the future: whether there would be a good harvest, whether there would be a skirmish with a neighboring tribe, whether the livestock would have a good offspring, how and when it was better to lay a new sanctuary dedicated to the gods. This is only a small part of what the ancient magi prophesied. The methods of these fortune-telling on runes and divination with the help of fire are practically lost. Later, runes were widely used among the Slavs as everyday writing, as well as to predict the future. In this book, the authors give explanations for each Slavic rune. First, the meaning of the rune in everyday life, its sacred meaning, is described. The following is an interpretation of the runes in fortune telling, because before proceeding with divination, one must understand the essence of the matter. The general value of the runes in fortune telling is considered, and then the direct and inverted value of the runes. The book concludes with a section that includes various runic layouts. Some of the layouts are copyrighted, and some are reconstructed from historical sources. The last part of the book includes colored runes in the form of cards. You can cut them out and use them for runic layouts. The book is written in a simple, accessible language and is intended for those who are fond of ancient Slavic history, fortune telling and various magical practices.

Fortune Telling and Spells with Candles and Molten Wax. Fiery Magic of the Ancient Slavs

by Olga Kryuchkova Elena Kryuchkova

If you read this book, then you, apparently, were interested in divination on wax and candles. So, what is divination at wax and divination at all? Fortune telling, or wax casting (wax casting) is one of the oldest types of divination, the roots of which go back to ancient Greece and ancient Egypt. Even in Babylon this kind of fortune telling was already known. Babylonian sorcerers also poured molten wax into the water, waited for it to solidify, and then interpreted the meaning of the figures obtained. So we can say that for a long time and to our time, the method of predicting the future through wax has not changed much. One of the sections of this book is also devoted to the fiery magic of the ancient Slavs. You will learn what sacred signs the Slavic Volhvs (Slavic Sorcerers) used and what they were used for. After reading the book, you can reproduce these rituals at home. The book is written in a simple accessible language and is intended for a wide range of readers.

Foundations of Epidemiology

by Marit L. Bovbjerg

Understanding human health-defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”i —is vital. Why are these people sick but those people aren’t? What can we do to improve health for everyone? Improved health in turn leads to gains in economic, social, educational, and other arenas, all of which are necessary for a successful, functioning society. Unfortunately, to understand human health, we must study humans—and humans are extremely difficult to study. Unlike laboratory-based sciences, where all conditions are under the control of the scientist, conducting scientific studies with human participants includes a host of complications and potential stumbling blocks. First and foremost, humans do not exist in controlled settings like laboratories. Each person has their own job, their own preferred foods, their own sleep schedule, their own hobbies, their own genetics, their own stress levels, their own set of environmental and social settings—all of which affect health. Since no two people are exactly alike, and since we cannot really tell people what to do, studying them is difficult.

Four Umbrellas: A Couple's Journey Into Young-Onset Alzheimer's

At the age of fifty-three, Tony walks away from a life of journalism and into an unknown future. June is forty-eight, a writer and teacher, and over the following decade watches as her husband changes — in interests, goals, and behaviour — until Tony has a fall, ending the life they had known. A diagnosis is seven years away, yet the signs of Alzheimer’s are all around. A suitcase Tony packs for a trip is jammed with four umbrellas, a visual symbol of cognitive looping. But how far back do these signs go? The couple starts probing the past and finding answers. This is not an old person’s disease.

Franz Brentano’s Philosophy After One Hundred Years: From History of Philosophy to Reism (Primary Sources in Phenomenology)

by Denis Fisette Guillaume Fréchette Hynek Janoušek

This volume brings together contributions that explore the philosophy of Franz Brentano. It looks at his work both critically and in the context of contemporary philosophy. For instance, Brentano influenced the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, the theory of objects of Alexius Meinong, the early development of the Gestalt theory, the philosophy of language of Anton Marty, the works of Carl Stumpf in the psychology of tone, and many others. Readers will also learn the contributions of Brentano's work to much debated contemporary issues in philosophy of mind, ontology, and the theory of emotions. The first section deals with Brentano’s conception of the history of philosophy. The next approaches his conception of empirical psychology from an empirical standpoint and in relation with competing views on psychology from the period. The third section discusses Brentano’s later programme of a descriptive psychology or “descriptive phenomenology” and some of his most innovative developments, for instance in the theory of emotions. The final section examines metaphysical issues and applications of his mereology. His reism takes here an important place. The intended readership of this book comprises phenomenologists, analytic philosophers, philosophers of mind and value, as well as metaphysicians. It will appeal to both graduate and undergraduate students, professors, and researchers in philosophy and psychology.

The French Art of Not Trying Too Hard

by Ollivier Pourriol

Sick of striving? Giving up on grit? Had enough of hustle culture? Daunted by the 10,000-hour rule? Relax: As the French know, it's the best way to be better at everything. In the realm of love, what could be less seductive than someone who's trying to seduce you? Seduction is the art of succeeding without trying, and that's a lesson the French have mastered. From Enforcers to Guardians: A Public Health Primer on Ending Police Violence

by Hannah L. Cooper Mindy Thompson Fullilove

A public health approach to understanding and eliminating excessive police violence.Excessive police violence and its disproportionate targeting of minority communities has existed in the United States since police forces first formed in the colonial period. A personal tragedy for its victims, for the people who love them, and for their broader communities, excessive police violence is also a profound violation of human and civil rights. Most public discourse about excessive police violence focuses, understandably, on the horrors of civilian deaths. In From Enforcers to Guardians, Hannah L. F. Cooper and Mindy Thompson Fullilove approach the issue from a radically different angle: as a public health problem. By using a public health framing, this book challenges readers to recognize that the suffering created by excessive police violence extends far outside of death to include sexual, psychological, neglectful, and nonfatal physical violence as well.Arguing that excessive police violence has been deliberately used to marginalize working-class and minority communities, Cooper and Fullilove describe what we know about the history, distribution, and health impacts of police violence, from slave patrols in colonial times to war on drugs policing in the present-day United States. Finally, the book surveys efforts, including Barack Obama's 2015 creation of the Task Force on 21st Century Policing, to eliminate police violence, and proposes a multisystem, multilevel strategy to end marginality and police violence and to achieve guardian policing. Aimed at anyone seeking to understand the causes and distributions of excessive police violence—and to develop interventions to end it—From Enforcers to Guardians frames excessive police violence so that it can be understood, researched, and taught about through a public health lens.
