Infant Research & Neuroscience at Work in Psychotherapy: Expanding the Clinical Repertoire
by Judith RustinTranslating recent neuroscience and infant research to clinical practice. By decoding the scientific data, this book explains how recent findings from brain and infant research can expand a clinician's understanding of the therapist-client relationship and, in turn, improve how therapy is done. Offering clinical insights into key developmental mechanisms, Judith Rustin highlights the possibilities for new and creative treatment protocols. She summarizes and synthesizes basic concepts and ideas derived from infant research and neuroscience for clinicians not familiar with the literature. Using examples from her own practice to show how a clinician might integrate these concepts into psychodynamic practice, she invites other clinicians to experiment with finding their own pathways to integration of this valuable material in the clinical endeavor. Rustin explains how self- and mutual regulation (or bidirectional interaction)--concepts of which are both firmly grounded in the dyadic systems model of interaction--develop in infancy, how they contribute to a growing sense of self, and how they ultimately serve as templates for future interactions with others. She explains and shows how an understanding of them enriches a two-person perspective in clinical work. She then focuses on the brain science behind four additional concepts, each of which has particular application to clinical work: memory, the mind-body connection, the fear system, and mirror neurons and the concept of shared circuitry. Clinical material is interwoven with explications of each concept.

The Claims of Parenting
by Stefan Ramaekers Judith SuissaMany sociological, historical and cultural stories can be and have already been told about why it is that parents in post-industrial, western societies face an often overwhelming array of advice on how to bring up their children. At the same time, there have been several philosophical treatments of the legal, moral and political issues surrounding issues of procreation, the rights of children and the duties of parents, as well as some philosophical accounts of the shifts in our underlying conceptualization of childhood and adult-child relationships. While this book partly builds on the insights of this literature, it is significantly different in that it offers a philosophically-informed discussion of the actual practical experience of being a parent, with its deliberations, judgements and dilemmas. In probing the ethical and conceptual questions suggested by the parent-child relationship, this unique volume demonstrates the irreducible philosophical richness of this relationship and thus provides an important counter-balance to the overly empirical and largely psychological focus of a great deal of "parenting" literature. Unlike other analytic work on the parent-child relationship and the educational role of parents, this work draws on first-person accounts of the day-to-day experience of being a parent in order to explore the ethical and epistemological aspects of this experience. In so doing it exposes the limitations of some of the languages within which contemporary "parenting" is conceptualized and discussed, and opens up a space for thinking about childrearing and the parent-child relationship beyond and other than in terms of the languages which dominate the ways in which we generally think about it today.

Relational-Cultural Therapy
by Judith V. JordanIn this second edition of Relational–Cultural Therapy (RCT), Judith V. Jordan returns to explore the history, theory, and practice of relationship centered, culturally oriented psychotherapy.

Western psychological theories generally depict human development as moving from dependence to independence. In contrast, RCT is built on the premise that, throughout the lifespan, human beings grow through and toward connection, and that we need connections to flourish. This theory views isolation, at both individual and cultural levels, as a major source of suffering. The goal of the relational therapist is to deepen the therapeutic relationship and, ultimately, the client’s relationships outside of therapy. The client’s relational images—positive or negative expectations created by past relationships – influence current relationships, and a negative image can result in disconnections between people and society. This essential primer, amply illustrated with case examples, is perfect for graduate students and seasoned practitioners alike. This new edition highlights new research on the effectiveness of RCT in a variety of real-world situations—such as developing team-building exercises in workplaces, and providing a theoretical frame for an E.U.-sponsored conference on human trafficking.
The Complexity of Connection: Writings from the Stone Center's Jean Baker Miller Training Institute
by Judith V. Jordan Maureen Walker Linda M. HardingThe volume presents an absorbing and practical examination of connection and disconnection at both individual and societal levels. Chapters explore how experiences of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, and gender influence relationships, and how people can connect across difference and disagreement.
Relational–Cultural Therapy: A Relational-cultural Approach With Couples (Theories of Psychotherapy Series®)
by Judith V. Jordan PhDIn this third edition, Judith Jordan explores the history, theory, and practice of relationship-centered, culturally oriented psychotherapy as a tool for building meaningful connections in a world of increasing isolation. This essential primer is ideal for students and practitioners alike, guiding them through the ins and outs of relational–cultural therapy (RCT). New to this edition is real-world research and guidelines related to distance learning, working with marginalized groups, and working towards social justice. Jordan built RCT upon the understanding that people need social and emotional connections to flourish. In a digital era full of uncertainty and disconnection, it is more important than ever to mend relational resilience and reestablish positive, growth-fostering relationships. The therapist therefore works to deepen their bond with the client to help them build similar bonds outside of therapy. They work with the client&’s relational images based on positive and negative experiences to manage expectations and teach relationship-building skills.
The Development of Political Attitudes in Children
by Judith V. Torney-PurtaBased on a study of 12,000 elementary school children in eight large and medium-sized American cities, this book presents the first large-scale study of political attitude formation in children. The authors view political development from the perspective of a general theory of socialization, and compare the influences of social class, intelligence, teacher attitude, and religious membership on the growth of political attitudes. The book outlines the way in which the child's political awareness evolvesfrom identification with authority figures such as father, policeman, the president, to a grasp of more abstract political concepts and the rudiments of political participation. Illuminating a topic of great theoretical concern and practical educational importance, the book is a significant contribution to the fields of political sociology, child development and educational psychology, and an important reference work for all concerned with the processes of socialization and of attitude formation in general. The Development of Political Attitudes in Children was based on a major survey, the first of its kind, begun at the University of Chicago in 1960 to as certain information about the induction of children into the political life of the United States, to describe the nature of socialization into citizenship roles, and to examine pre-adult political learning and behavior in terms of other implications for the stability of the political system.
Necessary Losses: The Loves Illusions Dependencies and Impossible Ex
by Judith ViorstFrom grief and mourning to aging and relationships, poet and Redbook contributor Judith Viorst presents a thoughtful and researched study in this examination of love, loss, and letting go.Drawing on psychoanalysis, literature, and personal experience, Necessary Losses is a philosophy for understanding and accepting life’s inevitabilities. In Necessary Losses, Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are a certain and necessary part of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers’ protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. She has written a book that is both life affirming and life changing.

And Then They Stopped Talking to Me: Making Sense of Middle School
by Judith WarnerThrough the stories of kids and parents in the middle school trenches, a New York Times bestselling author reveals why these years are so painful, how parents unwittingly make them worse, and what we all need to do to grow up.&“Judith Warner brilliantly challenges the assumption that middle school has to be a chalkboard jungle.&”—Peggy Orenstein, author of Boys & Sex and Girls & Sex The French have a name for the uniquely hellish years between elementary school and high school: l&’âge ingrat, or &“the ugly age.&” Characterized by a perfect storm of developmental changes—physical, psychological, and social—the middle school years are a time of great distress for children and parents alike, marked by hurt, isolation, exclusion, competition, anxiety, and often outright cruelty. Some of this is inevitable; there are intrinsic challenges to early adolescence. But these years are harder than they need to be, and Judith Warner believes that adults are complicit. With deep insight and compassion, Warner walks us through a new understanding of the role that middle school plays in all our lives. She argues that today&’s helicopter parents are overly concerned with status and achievement—in some ways a residual effect of their own middle school experiences—and that this worsens the self-consciousness, self-absorption, and social &“sorting&” so typical of early adolescence. Tracing a century of research on middle childhood and bringing together the voices of social scientists, psychologists, educators, and parents, Warner&’s book shows how adults can be moral role models for children, making them more empathetic, caring, and resilient. She encourages us to start treating middle schoolers as the complex people they are, holding them to high standards of kindness, and helping them see one another as more than &“jocks and mean girls, nerds and sluts.&” Part cultural critique and part call to action, this essential book unpacks one of life&’s most formative periods and shows how we can help our children not only survive it but thrive.
We've Got Issues
by Judith WarnerIn her provocative new book, New York Times-bestselling author Judith Warner explores the storm of debate over whether we are overdiagnosing and overmedicating our children who have "issues. " In Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety, Judith Warner explained what's gone wrong with the culture of parenting, and her conclusions sparked a national debate on how women and society view motherhood. Her new book, We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication, will generate the same kind of controversy, as she tackles a subject that's just as contentious and important: Are parents and physicians too quick to prescribe medication to control our children's behavior? Are we using drugs to excuse inept parents who can't raise their children properly? What Warner discovered from the extensive research and interviewing she did for this book is that passion on both sides of the issue "is ideological and only tangentially about real children," and she cuts through the jargon and hysteria to delve into a topic that for millions of parents involves one of the most important decisions they'll ever make for their child. Insightful, compelling, and deeply moving, We've Got Issuesis for parents, doctors, and teachers-anyone who cares about the welfare of today's children.
