Spatially Explicit Hyperparameter Optimization for Neural Networks
by Minrui ZhengNeural networks as the commonly used machine learning algorithms, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been extensively used in the GIScience domain to explore the nonlinear and complex geographic phenomena. However, there are a few studies that investigate the parameter settings of neural networks in GIScience. Moreover, the model performance of neural networks often depends on the parameter setting for a given dataset. Meanwhile, adjusting the parameter configuration of neural networks will increase the overall running time. Therefore, an automated approach is necessary for addressing these limitations in current studies. This book proposes an automated spatially explicit hyperparameter optimization approach to identify optimal or near-optimal parameter settings for neural networks in the GIScience field. Also, the approach improves the computing performance at both model and computing levels. This book is written for researchers of the GIScience field as well as social science subjects.

Revisiting China's Rural Urbanisation: A Pearl River Delta Region Perspective (China Perspectives)

Traditional Chinese Medicines: Molecular Structures, Natural Sources and Applications

The structure of the book has been extensively reorganised to make cross referencing the data much simpler. This new edition is therefore a substantial improvement on the first edition of this important reference on the structural chemistry of traditional Chinese medicines.

Sustainable Industrial Landscape Plan and Design: Total Human Ecosystem Formation and Evolution on Blakeley Island, Mobile, Alabama (SpringerBriefs in Geography)
by Long ZhouThis book applies the Total Human Ecosystem as a guiding concept in coastal urban communities to achieve a mutually beneficial relationship between industrial parks and their surrounding wetlands. The early 21st century has been shaped by a need for economic recovery, and by climate change. Consequently, new development models that promote both economic growth and environmental preservation are urgently needed. In turn, the book puts forward an innovative proposal to achieve the shift from a hard path to a soft path through landscape architectural interventions, one that will help industrial factories and their surrounding wetlands coevolve toward sustainability. Through the incorporation of science and design, the proposal for the Total Human Ecosystem on Blakeley Island integrates industry with its surrounding environment. The design scenarios for this new living system are based on scientific principles of landscape ecology that take into account both the human and nonhuman environments as components of the land mosaic. Sustainability is not a final status that is achieved once and for all; it is an ongoing challenge. As a case study, this proposal outlines the urgently needed reconciliation between industrial parks and their surrounding natural ecosystems, and promotes the evolution of both components toward sustainability.
Growing Up American: How Vietnamese Children Adapt to Life in The United States

Uprooted from their homeland and often thrust into poor urban neighborhoods, these newcomers have nevertheless managed to establish strong communities in a short space of time. Most remarkably, their children often perform at high academic levels despite difficult circumstances. Growing Up American tells the story of Vietnamese children and sheds light on how they are negotiating the difficult passage into American society. Min Zhou and Carl Bankston draw on research and insights from many sources, including the U. S. census, survey data, and their own observations and in-depth interviews. Focusing on the Versailles Village enclave in New Orleans, one of many newly established Vietnamese communities in the United States, the authors examine the complex skein of family, community, and school influences that shape these children's lives. With no ties to existing ethnic communities, Vietnamese refugees had little control over where they were settled and no economic or social networks to plug into. Growing Up American describes the process of building communities that were not simply transplants but distinctive outgrowths of the environment in which the Vietnamese found themselves. Family and social organizations re-formed in new ways, blending economic necessity with cultural tradition. These reconstructed communities create a particular form of social capital that helps disadvantaged families overcome the problems associated with poverty and ghettoization. Outside these enclaves, Vietnamese children faced a daunting school experience due to language difficulties, racial inequality, deteriorating educational services, and exposure to an often adversarial youth subculture. How have the children of Vietnamese refugees managed to overcome these challenges? Growing Up American offers important evidence that community solidarity, cultural values, and a refugee sensibility have provided them with the resources needed to get ahead in American society. Zhou and Bankston also document the price exacted by the process of adaptation, as the struggle to define a personal identity and to decide what it means to be American sometimes leads children into conflict with their tight-knit communities. Growing Up American is the first comprehensive study of the unique experiences of Vietnamese immigrant children. It sets the agenda for future research on second generation immigrants and their entry into American society.
