Private Sector Housing and Health: Evaluating the Effectiveness of Regulation Intended to Protect the Health of Tenants (Routledge Focus on Environmental Health)

by Paul Oatt

This book is an evaluation of the effectiveness of housing enforcement and tenant protection in England’s private rented sector using policy analysis to evaluate regulatory provisions and local authority guidance to identify the advantages and limitations of existing policies. From the environmental health practitioner perspective, the targeted health problem is occupiers privately renting from negligent or criminal landlords who are subsequently exposed to hazardous conditions arising from disrepair.Paul Oatt’s analysis looks at the powers local authorities have to address retaliatory eviction when enforcing against housing disrepair and digs deeper into their duties to prevent homelessness and powers to protect tenants from illegal eviction. He then explores the potential for tenants to take private action against landlords over failures to address disrepair, before finally discussing proposals put forward by the government to abolish retaliatory evictions and improve security of tenure with changes to contractual arrangements between landlords and tenants, based on successive stakeholder consultations. The policy analysis looks at these aspects to define the overall effectiveness of housing strategies and their implementation, examining causality, plausibility and intervention logic as well as the unintended effects on the population. Equitability is examined to see where policy effects create inequalities as well as the costs, feasibility and acceptability of policies from landlords' and tenants’ perspectives. The book will be of relevance to professionals interested in housing and health, as well as students at universities that teach courses in environmental health, public health, and housing studies.

The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence (The Psychology of Everything)

by Tony Prescott

What is Artificial Intelligence? How will AI impact society? Is AI more powerful than human intelligence? The Psychology of AI explores all aspects of the psychology–AI relationship, asking how closely AI can resemble humans, and whether this means they could have some form of self-awareness. It considers how AI systems have been modelled on human intelligence and the similarities between brains and computers, along with the current limitations of AI and how these could be overcome in the future. It also looks at how people interact with AI in their everyday lives, exploring some of the ethical and societal risks, such as bias in AI algorithms, and the consequences for our long-term future if AIs do surpass humans in important ways.As AI continues to break new milestones, The Psychology of AI answers key questions about what it really means to be human, and how AI will impact our lives in every way, now and into the future.

The Routledge Handbook of Law and Death

by Marc Trabsky

The Routledge Handbook of Law and Death provides a comprehensive survey of contemporary scholarship on the intersections of law and death in the 21st century. It showcases how socio-legal scholars have contributed to the critical turn in death studies and how the sociology of death has impacted upon the discipline of law. In bringing together prominent academics and emerging experts from a diverse range of disciplines, the Handbook shows how, far from shunning questions of mortality, legal institutions incessantly talk about death. Touching upon the epistemologies and materialities of death, and problems of contested deaths and posthumous harms, the Handbook questions what is distinctive about the disciplinary alignment of law and death, how law regulates and manages death in the everyday, and how thinking with law can enrich our understandings of the presence of death in our lives. In a time when the world is facing global inequalities in living and dying, and legal institutions are increasingly interrogating their relationships to death, this Handbook makes for essential reading for scholars, students, and practitioners in law, humanities, and the social sciences. The Open Access version of Chapter 19, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) 4.0 International license.

by Tra Giang Nguyen Oliver Napila Gomez

A Unified System Fitness Design proposes a new fitness framework that encompasses all fitness indicators in a holistic and comprehensive manner, striving to provide a comprehensive and inclusive definition of physical fitness, one that considers all attributes contributing to overall well-being, and crafting a flexible framework that can adapt to diverse contexts and purposes of physical fitness assessments. This new book is divided into three parts. Part I explores redefining and reconstructing the concepts of an inclusive and holistic fitness framework. In Part II, the reader is encouraged to embark on a journey to discover the interconnected system functions of physiological health, homeostasis, motor control, and energy regulation. Part III reinforces the role of wellness in the Unified Systems Fitness Design, guided by the principles of inclusion and equity, in the decision-making process. There are still many uncharted territories in the realm of fitness and wellness. A Unified System Fitness Design addresses these gaps in the literature and practice and seeks to inspire a transformative worldview that urges the reader to question the existing paradigms and explore innovative, inclusive approaches that cater to people with unique needs. The 5 Resets: Rewire Your Brain and Body for Less Stress and More Resilience

by Dr. Aditi Nerurkar M.D.

“The key is managing stress, so we can lead healthier, happier lives. The 5 Resets will help you do just that.” — Katie Couric, Journalist and Founder and CEO, Katie Couric Media "A masterful approach to rewire our brains and bodies from the inside out." — Arianna Huffington, Founder and CEO, Thrive GlobalFrom Harvard stress expert, nationally sought after speaker, and television correspondent Dr. Aditi Nerurkar comes a reimagined approach to overcoming your stress and burnout using five small but mighty mindset shifts. For Dr. Nerurkar, the common misperception of stress as “bad” needs reframing. Stress is a healthy biological phenomenon that helps us tackle life’s many demands. It becomes problematic when it’s out of tune with the frequency of our lives, resulting in burnout, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and many other physical symptoms. To bring stress back to healthy levels, Dr. Nerurkar offers her five science-backed mindset shifts, rooted in more than two decades of clinical experience, for when life gets hard:The First Reset: Get Clear on What Matters MostThe Second Reset: Find Quiet in a Noisy WorldThe Third Reset: Sync Your Brain and Your BodyThe Fourth Reset: Come Up for AirThe Fifth Reset: Bring Your Best Self ForwardDr. Nerurkar illuminates why our everyday attempts at being “resilient”—like multitasking, sleeping less, and undergoing huge lifestyle overhauls—aren’t beneficial to our stressed brains. Instead, she prescribes practical, real-world solutions for our modern-day perils that are time efficient, cost-free, and can be applied to anyone’s life, including following the Resilience Rule of 2 (making no more than two changes at a time because doing more is unsustainable), accepting that multitasking is a myth (our brains are wired to do one thing at a time!), and adopting her Bookend Method (creating boundaries to honor our brain’s need for compartmentalization). The five mindset shifts, along with fifteen proven techniques, offer you a road map to change your relationship with stress, bring your biology back into balance, and feel calmer right now.
