Disrupting Political Science: Black Women Reimagining the Discipline (SUNY series in Black Women's Wellness)
by Angela K. Lewis-MaddoxNineteen Black women in political science share their personal and professional journeys, shedding light on the state of the discipline—and how it needs to change. This volume brings to the fore Black women's experiences of, and contributions to, political science-a field that never intended to view them as subjects worthy of study and certainly not as professors. Disrupting Political Science demonstrates how Black women blend creative resistance and self-care to overcome obstacles and navigate the discipline's hegemonic demands. Representing a range of career stages and types of institutions, the nineteen contributors share stories of trauma and triumph, as well as concrete guidance rooted in Black feminist literature and reports on the profession. A witty, searing, sometimes heart-wrenching catalyst to reimagine political science, Disrupting Political Science is essential reading for everyone in the discipline and for faculty and administrators across the university committed to recruiting and retaining Black women.
The Living Classroom, Second Edition: Teaching and Collective Consciousness
by Christopher M. BacheA pioneering work in teaching and transpersonal psychology, The Living Classroom explores the dynamics of collective consciousness in the classroom. In this second edition, Bache has, in his own words, "come out of the psychedelic closet," speaking candidly about the role that psychedelics played in the development of his integral, holistic pedagogy. Combining scientific research with personal accounts collected over thirty years, Bache examines the subtle influences that radiate invisibly around teachers as they work—unintended, cognitive resonances that spring up between teachers and students in the classroom. While these kinds of synchronistic connections are often overlooked by traditional academics, Bache demonstrates that they occur too frequently and are too pointed to be dismissed as mere coincidence. Drawing upon Rupert Sheldrake's theory of morphic fields, Bache proposes that well-taught courses generate "learning fields" around them, forms of collective consciousness that can trigger new insights and startling personal transformations. Moving beyond theory, this book is rich with student stories and offers practical, hands-on strategies for teachers who want to begin working with these learning fields to take their teaching to a more conscious level.

Historic Sugar Mills in Santo Domingo: Case Studies in Adaptive Reuse
by Jaime Correa Carmen GuerreroDistributed by University Press of Florida on behalf of the Brian Canin Urban Design AwardColonial sugar mills, ingenios coloniales, are essential to the material history of the Dominican Republic. They served as a cornerstone of the national economy and as a foundation for the stability required during the colonial era. From the 1500s to the end of the 1800s, sugar mills and sugar factories were founded and sustained in what is now known as “La Ruta del Azucar,” or the Sugar Road. Colonial sugar mills not only represent a significant period in the country's history, but they also hold significant cultural and architectural value. In this volume, students at the School of Architecture of the University of Miami explore what is left of some of the most important ingenios coloniales in the Dominican Republic and, through an innovative approach of adaptive reuse, propose alternatives to celebrate their architectural value and cultural influences while also exploring the socio-economic and racial disparities and the political ideologies that are part of the history of these sites. The students approached the project with a spirit of innovation and the desire to document histories and possibilities for future generations in the Dominican Republic and to leave behind a legacy for new students to do similar work in urban and rural environments.
Vision and Resilience: A Story of Remarkable Growth and Transformation at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College
by Joseph M. Beilein Jr.Vision and Resilience recounts the remarkable turnaround of a satellite campus that became one of the brightest spots in the Penn State University system: Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Covering the period from 1980 to 2010, this story serves as a blueprint for administrators who aspire to grow their institutions in challenging times.Joseph M. Beilein Jr. writes about how, at a time when tensions were high between faculty and the administration, students and the administration, students and the police, and even among the students themselves, The Behrend College saw an unprecedented increase in enrollment, endowments, land acquisition, building, and curricular opportunities. He describes how administrators John Lilley and Jack Burke worked with local leaders, faculty, and other officials to transform The Behrend College into a research institution—and how they worked with faculty, coaches, and even students to convince young people that Behrend was, in fact, a destination campus. All of these efforts resulted in a college that bucked trends in higher education, demography, and economics to become the leading college in northwestern Pennsylvania.Fascinating and instructive, Vision and Resilience tells an encouraging story of college success against the odds. It will be of interest to university administrators, faculty, and anyone with a personal connection to the Penn State campus farthest from University Park.
