Computational Intelligence for Semantic Knowledge Management: New Perspectives for Designing and Organizing Information Systems (Studies in Computational Intelligence #837)

by Giovanni Acampora Witold Pedrycz Athanasios V. Vasilakos Autilia Vitiello

This book provides a comprehensive overview of computational intelligence methods for semantic knowledge management. Contrary to popular belief, the methods for semantic management of information were created several decades ago, long before the birth of the Internet. In fact, it was back in 1945 when Vannevar Bush introduced the idea for the first protohypertext: the MEMEX (MEMory + indEX) machine. In the years that followed, Bush’s idea influenced the development of early hypertext systems until, in the 1980s, Tim Berners Lee developed the idea of the World Wide Web (WWW) as it is known today. From then on, there was an exponential growth in research and industrial activities related to the semantic management of the information and its exploitation in different application domains, such as healthcare, e-learning and energy management. However, semantics methods are not yet able to address some of the problems that naturally characterize knowledge management, such as the vagueness and uncertainty of information. This book reveals how computational intelligence methodologies, due to their natural inclination to deal with imprecision and partial truth, are opening new positive scenarios for designing innovative semantic knowledge management architectures.

Social Big Data Analytics: Practices, Techniques, and Applications

by Bilal Abu-Salih Pornpit Wongthongtham Dengya Zhu Kit Yan Chan Amit Rudra

This book focuses on data and how modern business firms use social data, specifically Online Social Networks (OSNs) incorporated as part of the infrastructure for a number of emerging applications such as personalized recommendation systems, opinion analysis, expertise retrieval, and computational advertising. This book identifies how in such applications, social data offers a plethora of benefits to enhance the decision making process. This book highlights that business intelligence applications are more focused on structured data; however, in order to understand and analyse the social big data, there is a need to aggregate data from various sources and to present it in a plausible format. Big Social Data (BSD) exhibit all the typical properties of big data: wide physical distribution, diversity of formats, non-standard data models, independently-managed and heterogeneous semantics but even further valuable with marketing opportunities. The book provides a review of the current state-of-the-art approaches for big social data analytics as well as to present dissimilar methods to infer value from social data. The book further examines several areas of research that benefits from the propagation of the social data. In particular, the book presents various technical approaches that produce data analytics capable of handling big data features and effective in filtering out unsolicited data and inferring a value. These approaches comprise advanced technical solutions able to capture huge amounts of generated data, scrutinise the collected data to eliminate unwanted data, measure the quality of the inferred data, and transform the amended data for further data analysis. Furthermore, the book presents solutions to derive knowledge and sentiments from BSD and to provide social data classification and prediction. The approaches in this book also incorporate several technologies such as semantic discovery, sentiment analysis, affective computing and machine learning. This book has additional special feature enriched with numerous illustrations such as tables, graphs and charts incorporating advanced visualisation tools in accessible an attractive display.

Stress engineers, lecturers, researchers and students will find Finite Element Analysis for Satellite Structures: Applications to Their Design, Manufacture and Testing a key guide on with practical instruction on applying manufacturing simulations to improve their design and reduce project cost, how to prepare static and dynamic test specifications, and how to use finite element method to investigate in more details any component that may fail during testing.

Transforming Enterprise Cloud Services

by Hosame Abu-Amara Jessica Feng Sanford William Y Chang

Transforming Enterprise Cloud Services addresses the fundamental ideology of Cloud Services and how enterprises in commercial, federal, and defense industries can transform their current information technology and management models to adopt this new method. It goes beyond the mere description of service frameworks in relation to cloud technologies and operations and provides practical path-forward solutions for identified challenges. For instance, as organizations transform their data and service models to compete in a new environment where data and services coexist with others in a public-held eco-system, enterprises have to face the challenge of data synthesis from a massive number of sources. One answer to this issue relies on a cross-organizational policy and technology coordination that can ensure that data will not be reproduced or manipulated by unauthorized entities. Transforming Enterprise Cloud Services explains how organizations can justify their current practices to take advantage of such collaboration synthesis securely, safely, reliably, and cost-effectively. Transforming Enterprise Cloud Services elucidates the service-oriented nature of Cloud Services and identifies issues and challenges from clients' and vendors' perspectives. It also portrays how enterprise operators can successfully deploy their IT environment from both business and technical perspectives to enable massive scalability, high resilience, enforced security, and collaborative dynamics.

Feature Selection and Enhanced Krill Herd Algorithm for Text Document Clustering (Studies in Computational Intelligence #816)

by Laith Mohammad Abualigah

This book puts forward a new method for solving the text document (TD) clustering problem, which is established in two main stages: (i) A new feature selection method based on a particle swarm optimization algorithm with a novel weighting scheme is proposed, as well as a detailed dimension reduction technique, in order to obtain a new subset of more informative features with low-dimensional space. This new subset is subsequently used to improve the performance of the text clustering (TC) algorithm and reduce its computation time. The k-mean clustering algorithm is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the obtained subsets. (ii) Four krill herd algorithms (KHAs), namely, the (a) basic KHA, (b) modified KHA, (c) hybrid KHA, and (d) multi-objective hybrid KHA, are proposed to solve the TC problem; each algorithm represents an incremental improvement on its predecessor. For the evaluation process, seven benchmark text datasets are used with different characterizations and complexities.Text document (TD) clustering is a new trend in text mining in which the TDs are separated into several coherent clusters, where all documents in the same cluster are similar. The findings presented here confirm that the proposed methods and algorithms delivered the best results in comparison with other, similar methods to be found in the literature.

Information Fusion in Distributed Sensor Networks with Byzantines (Signals and Communication Technology)

by Andrea Abrardo Mauro Barni Kassem Kallas Benedetta Tondi

This book reviews the most powerful attack strategies and potential defense mechanisms, always approaching the interplay between the Fusion Center and the Byzantines from a game-theoretic perspective. For each of the settings considered, the equilibria of the game and the corresponding payoffs are derived, shedding new light on the achievable performance level and the impact that the presence of the Byzantines has on the accuracy of decisions made by the Fusion Center. Accordingly, the book offers a simple yet effective introduction to the emerging field of adversarial information fusion, providing a wealth of intuitive take-home lessons for practitioners interested in applying the most basic notions to the design of practical systems, while at the same time introducing researchers and other readers to the mathematical details behind the theory.

Software Metrics and Software Metrology

Most of the software measures currently proposed to the industry bring few real benefits to either software managers or developers. This book looks at the classical metrology concepts from science and engineering, using them as criteria to propose an approach to analyze the design of current software measures and then design new software measures (illustrated with the design of a software measure that has been adopted as an ISO measurement standard). The book includes several case studies analyzing strengths and weaknesses of some of the software measures most often quoted. It is meant for software quality specialists and process improvement analysts and managers.
