Reasonable Perspectives On Religion

by Richard Curtis

After the surprising publishing success of the so-called New Atheists it has become clear that there is a market for critical discussions about religion. A religion is much more complex than a set of beliefs which cannot be proven, as the New Atheists argue. There is, in fact, much more to religion and much more to the arguments about its truth claims. This book seeks to bring together a range of discussions, both critical and apologetic, each of which examines some part of religion and its functions. Half of the contributors are critical of some element of religion and the other half are apologetic in nature, seeking to defend or extend some particular religious argument. Covering a wide range of topics, including ethics, religious pluralism, the existence of God, and reasonableness of Islam, these pieces have in common arguments that are made in careful and scholarly ways—they represent reasonable perspectives on a wide swath of contemporary religious debates, in contrast to the unreasonableness that creeps into discussions on religion in American society.

Islam

by Fazlur Rahman

PUBLISHER'S NOTE In dating, Muslims naturally use their own era, dating from the Hijra or flight of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina in 622 ad, sometimes called Anno Hegirae. Since the Muslim year is lunar it is impracticable to convert dates from the Muslim to the Christian era, and vice versa, by a simple formula. The publishers have therefore decided to give all dates-except for a few in the present century-in the Muslim style as well as in the familiar Gregorian calendar; this style of dating is in conformity with modern scholarly practice in the Islamic field. The Muslim date is always given first, the Gregorian date following after an oblique stroke: thus, 287/900, 787/1385, 1287/1870-1, etc. Occasionally a Muslim year will fall entirely within one Christian solar year, but usually there will be some overlapping between the years of the two eras. The same system is also applied to centuries: 8th/14th century, early 12th/late 17th century, etc.

The war had changed so much, and it was impossible to ignore the results. Slowly, Peter realizes that he must admit that things cannot stay the same, not for himself, his family, or his friends. The only question that remains is what he will do in response.
