Betty White's Pet Love: How Pets Take Care of Us

by Betty White Thomas J. Watson

Much has been written about how people should take care of their pets-but here is a fascinating, documented account of how pets can and do take care of people. Noted actress and animal lover Betty White draws on personal experience and the studies of leading authorities to show how science has confirmed what pet owners have known instinctively all along-that pets contribute to the health and well-being of their owners. Pet-love-"the human/companion animal bond" -is a mutually rewarding relationship. In the past few years, scientific research has not only explained why and how but also greatly extended the possibilities for its use. For instance, "pet therapy" or "pet-facilitated therapy" is currently being used to treat the mentally ill, revitalize the elderly, and motivate the handicapped. This book describes some remarkable case histories. There are new insights now into the attitudes and feelings that humans have toward their pets and therefore new insights into what pets do for us. Many animals give owners who live alone a feeling of security. Walking a dog provides exercise for people who might otherwise never get out of the house. The companionship of pets dramatically reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness. Perhaps most important, pets provoke a strong caring response in their owners. Pets reduce stress, may lower a person's blood pressure, and in other ways can actually improve health and prolong life. Pet-Love is an entertaining book as well as a serious one-just as pets are themselves entertaining. Betty White tells many stories of her own experiences with animals and those of celebrity pet owners such as Carol Burnett, Jimmy Stewart, Mary Tyler Moore, Fred Astaire, and Loretta Swit. It is wonderful to read about the intelligence of Hearing Ear dogs who help their deaf owners cope with life, or how family pets can aid the learning process in children, and how pets can give everyone the happiness of experiencing their un questioning affection.

Between Psychology and Philosophy: East-West Themes and Beyond (Palgrave Studies in Comparative East-West Philosophy)

by Michael Slote

This open access book discusses a variety of important but unprecedented ways in which psychology can be useful to philosophy. The early chapters illustrate this theme via comparisons between Chinese and Western philosophy. It is argued that the Chinese notion of a heart-mind is superior to the Western concept of mind, but then, more even-handedly, the relative strengths and weaknesses of Chinese and Western thought overall are critically examined. In later chapters, the philosophical uses of psychology are treated more specifically in relation to major issues in Western philosophy. Michael Slote shows that empathy and emotion play a role in speech acts (like assertion and thanking) that speech act theory has totally ignored. Similarly, he treats the age-old question of whether justice pays using psychological material that has not previously been recognized. Finally, the implications of psychological egoism are discussed in terms of some new psychological and, indeed, human distinctions. Human life is pervaded by instincts and aspirations that are neither egoistic nor altruistic, and recognizing that fact can help put egoism in its place. It is less of a challenge to morality than we have realized.

Beyond 2012: A Complete Guide to End-of-Time Predictions

by Geoff Stray John Major Jenkins

An illustrated, encyclopedic overview of the prophecies, calendars, and theories that indicate the year 2012 is a threshold of great change for humanity • Looks at the scientific and anthropological evidence for the rare galactic alignment due to occur in December 2012 • Sifts through the catastrophic theories to show what we might really expect in 2012 In December of 2012 the Mayan Calendar’s Great Cycle will come to an end. Opinion remains divided as to whether apocalyptic scenarios of worldwide destruction or utopian visions of a spiritually renewed humanity will prevail after this key date has passed. What is certain, however, is that a rare galactic alignment will occur, one so unique that it is found at the core of many wisdom traditions from around the globe. Geoff Stray has been collecting the vast amounts of data relating to the 2012 phenomena since 1982. Far from confining his research to the Maya, who provide the most prominent predictions indicating this date will herald significant changes for humanity, he has studied the prophetic traditions of other cultures--including the Tibetan, Chinese, Jewish, Ethiopian, and tribal cultures from around the globe--to show the kind of convergence of cosmic purposes happening along a number of parallel tracks. This book offers an extensive study of many modern theories, including Terence McKenna’s timewave zero and Maurice Cotterell’s sunspot research as well as anomalous phenomena such as near death experiences and crop circles. Sifting through all the scientific research and speculation that the year 2012 has inspired, Geoff Stray provides an encyclopedic look at what we might really expect on this pivotal date.

Beyond Anger: How to Hold On to Your Heart and Your Humanity in the Midst of Injustice

by Shambhala Publications

In July 2013, multiple bombs exploded in Bodh Gaya, India, in and around the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage site, the Mahabodhi temple that marks the spot where the Buddha attained enlightenment. In response, Shambhala Publications offers this free eBook consisting of excerpts from some of our books from a variety of Buddhist traditions that encapsulate values of love and nonviolence, which we can all practice ourselves. A chapter from the Karmapa points out the toxicity and uselessness of anger, from a basic, interpersonal level to the wider society at large. In "I Take Up the Way of Letting Go of Anger," Zen teacher Diane Eshin Rizzetto helps us look at how we relate to an emotion like anger and, rather than suppress it, she marks a clear pathway we can follow to awaken in its presence and not let it incite us to negative thoughts and actions. Jack Kornfield talks about how to succeed in bringing mindfulness and loving-kindness into arenas like politics and war zones. And a short selection from the chapter on patience in the Mahayana classic The Way of the Bodhisattva highlights that the real enemy is anger itself, not something or someone external.

Beyond Any Kind of God

by Dr Jack Kevorkian

Who has not at least once in his lifetime asked himself, "What is this thing called 'life'?" "What does it mean to 'be'?" "How and why do we 'live'?" "What is this great and sinister unknown, 'death'?" An instant of meditative stargazing may prompt any of these questions. The purpose of this work is very broad and ambitious. Any effort aimed at trying to peer into the Great Unknown, the far-bidding realm of transcendentalism (if it exists), is bound to be fraught with "absurdities" and "improbabilities," to be "fantastic" here and there, to be "ridiculous" as a whole. This book could be all that, and more, if it were offered as more than an attempt to merely exemplify what the basic concepts may or possibly could entail and to develop a philosophic view as timeless, as fundamentally unchangeable, as the universe with which it deals. As a logical beginning the author takes a close look at "existence" followed by "life," which cannot be independent of it and with which it is really inextricably alloyed. As it ends things for us on earth, so too will "death" end this discourse. The knell will be not so much a dirge as it will be a harmonious synthesis of a grand unity--the undissectible fusion of death, life, and existence into an inscrutable scheme that might be cogent and imposing enough to cause one to look beyond his idols and icons for the essence of his being and his non-being.

Beyond Any Kind of God

by Dr. Jack Kevorkian

The controversial doctor and advocate of assisted suicide presents a philosophical inquiry into the nature of life and death. What is this thing called &“life&”? What does it mean to &“be&”? How and why do we &“live&”? What is this great and sinister unknown, &“death&”? These are timeless and universal questions. They are the type of questions prompted by meditative stargazing, and the sort we too often avoid in our modern world. In this ambitious and contemplative work, Jack Kevorkian examines these Great Questions anew. Known in the media as Dr. Death, Kevorkian is perhaps the world&’s most prominent euthanasia activist. Believing terminally ill patients have the right to pursue physician-assisted suicide, he personally aided doctors in more than one hundred such procedures. Rather than offering a scientific or philosophical treatise, Beyond Any Kind of God is Kevorkian&’s personal, mental meandering into the very hazy phenomena that constitute the basis for human life.

Beyond Autonomy: Limits and Alternatives to Informed Consent in Research Ethics and Law (Cambridge Bioethics and Law)

by David G. Kirchhoffer Bernadette J. Richards

Respect for autonomy has become a fundamental principle in human research ethics. Nonetheless, this principle and the associated process of obtaining informed consent do have limitations. This can lead to some groups, many of them vulnerable, being left understudied. This book considers these limitations and contributes through legal and philosophical analyses to the search for viable approaches to human research ethics. It explores the limitations of respect for autonomy and informed consent both in law and through the examination of cases where autonomy is lacking (infants), diminished (addicts), and compromised (low socio-economic status). It examines alternative and complementary concepts to overcome the limits of respect for autonomy, including beneficence, dignity, virtue, solidarity, non-exploitation, vulnerability and self-ownership. It takes seriously the importance of human relationality and community in qualifying, tempering and complementing autonomy to achieve the ultimate end of human research - the good of humankind.
