The Frighteners: A Celebration of our Fascination with the Macabre

by Peter Laws

The Frighteners is a bizarrely compelling, laugh-out-loud exploration of societies’ fascination with the dark, spooky, and downright terrifying side of life. The author--self proclaimed “sinister minister”--opens the book by reflecting on how he went from a horror-obsessed atheist to a God-fearing Christian and then reconciled his love of the macabre with his new faith. In the chapters that follow, Laws takes us on a worldwide romp to shine light on the dark corners of our own minds. An American hell house--controversial Christian “haunted houses” that act out the horrors of abortion, drug use, etc.—hosts his reflection on the use of horror in religion. A party in London with real life “vampires” exemplifies modern sexual fascination with the parasitic undead. He goes ghost hunting in an underground barbershop where a murderer used to cut hair. A professor in Denmark who is an expert on the recent Slenderman court case helps him explore the link between technology and the supernatural. In accessible and light-hearted prose, Peter Laws takes us from the dark corners of his mind to the underbelly of various macabre cultures to illuminate society’s preoccupation with death and horror. The Frighteners combines psychology, religious theory, and personal memoir to create a dynamic and fascinating read that is informative and entertaining.

Frightening Kidnap

by Donnefar Skedar Roberto W. Nobrega

“Frightening Kidnap” would be just an independent tale of any given work that I would create over time, but in every little bit of the story that I wrote, I ended up noticing it created its own course and totally swerved from the horror tale I was writing at first. Thus, this tale ended up being isolated and unique, a short and simple suspense tale, full of mystery. Nowadays, it is part of book “Cadavérico”, but the e-version was released separately. This version is the same as the one in the book, the only differences are the inscription and this note, which may be found in the original “Cadavérico”.

Frightfully Friendly Ghosties: School of Meanies

by David Roberts Daren King

Frightfully Friendly Ghosties, described as "exciting, charming and ridiculous," byThe Guardian, is a hilarious book for young readers about the adventures of a funny, charming, and terribly polite group of ghosts who just want to get along with their housemates. The cast of classic characters, brilliant one-liners, and clever plotting will delight children and parents alike.King's "spicy wit" ensures School of Meanies is "full of wibbly wobbly sketchers that will make younger children crow with pleasure," according to the Literary Review. "Ghost School is stupid and rubbish, and, um, I'm not going to Ghost School ever again!" Bumping--the ghosties' only way to interact with the physical world--is Humphrey Bump's favorite thing. But the nasty headmaster at ghost school doesn't agree. He expels Humphrey for-- you've got it!--bumping. So the other ghosties--Agatha, Tabitha and Wither--find Humphrey a place at still-alive school. They are also on hand to help him make friends. Wither invisibly writes a spooky poem on the board, Agatha sends children whirling into the clouds, and they all whisp out of Humphrey's satchel during lessons. The still-alive children are so mean they only run away. But they are nothing compared to the still-alive headmaster who is the biggest bully ever. Can Humphrey gather all the ghosties together to fight the bully, save the school and make lots of new friends?
