Turning Japanese: Memoirs of a Sansei (Books That Changed the World)

by David Mura

&“The poet David Mura brings an intriguing perspective to the New World quest for enlightenment from this ancient and ascendant culture&” (The New York Times). Award-winning poet David Mura&’s critically acclaimed memoir Turning Japanese chronicles how a year in Japan transformed his sense of self and pulled into sharp focus his complicated inheritance. Mura is a sansei, a third-generation Japanese-American who grew up on baseball and hot dogs in a Chicago suburb where he heard more Yiddish than Japanese. Turning Japanese chronicles his quest for identity with honesty, intelligence, and poetic vision, and it stands as a classic meditation on difference and assimilation and is a valuable window onto a country that has long fascinated our own. Turning Japanese was a New York Times Notable Book and winner of an Oakland PEN Josephine Miles Book Award. This edition includes a new afterword by the author. &“A dizzying interior voyage of self-discovery and splintered identity.&” —Chicago Tribune &“There is brilliant writing in this book, observations of Japanese humanity and culture that are subtly different from and more penetrating than what we usually get from Westerners.&” —The New Yorker &“Turning Japanese reads like a fascinating novel you can&’t put down . . . Mura&’s story is a universal one, and one that is accessible to everyone, even those whose experience in the U.S. is not that of a person of color.&” —Asian Week &“[Mura] paints a portrait of Japan that is rich and satisfying . . . a refreshingly kindly and tolerant study, a powerful antidote to the venomous anti-Japanese mood that seems, distressingly, to be seizing some corners of the American mind.&” —Conde Nast Traveler

Meanwhile, Kinta and her brother explored the glorious countryside, participated in the region's many seasonal rites and rituals, and came to know and love the charming, resilient Italian people. With the coming of World War II the family had to leave Aulla; years later, though, Kinta would return to witness the courage and skill of the Tuscan people as they rebuilt their lives. Tuscany: A History

by Alistair Moffat

&“Some of the most fascinating, intriguing and, yes, brutal episodes of the region&’s past written in the fast-paced, involving style of an adventure novel&” (Italy Magazine, &“Book of the Week&”). With the perfect fusion of history, art, architecture, superb natural beauty, and weather—not to mention magnificent traditions of food and drink—Tuscany has cast its spell over visitors for centuries. What is it that makes this exquisite part of Italy so seductive? To answer this question, Alistair Moffat embarks on a journey into Tuscany&’s past. From the flowering of the Etruscan civilization in the seventh century BC through the rise of the powerful medieval communes of Arezzo, Lucca, Pisa, and Florence and the birth of the Renaissance, he underlines both the area&’s regional uniqueness and the vital role it has played in the history of the whole of Italy. Insightful, readable, and imbued with the author&’s own enthusiasm for Tuscany, this book includes a wealth of information not found in tourist guides. As the Herald raves, &“If you travel to the region, you&’ll want to take with you Moffat&’s Tuscany: A History; and if you read the book, you&’ll want to travel to the region.&” &“Compelling . . . Tuscarawas County, Ohio (Images of America)

by Fred Miller

Although comprised of only 18 communities, Tuscarawas County, Ohio boasts a long and varied history. Incorporated in 1808, it is rich in Native American and early pioneer lore. It is the birthplace of the first pioneer settlement in the Ohio Country (1772-1777), and was home to the only Revolutionary War Fort in the state, erected in 1778 near Bolivar, Ohio. Baseball great Cy Young was born and is buried here. The Society of Separatists of Zoar experimented with one of the most successful endeavors in communal living in American history. Coal mines, a significant source of employment for residents of the county, dotted the countryside. The Ohio Erie Canal, which ran the entire length of the county, provided transportation for area goods and people. Major flooding in 1913 caused intensive damage to low-lying settlements. More recently, archaeological expeditions have sketched an image of early life in these communities, and have even uncovered a Revolutionary War Burial Site.
