Full Body Burden: Growing Up in the Nuclear Shadow of Rocky Flats

by Kristen Iversen

Full Body Burden is a haunting work of narrative nonfiction about a young woman, Kristen Iversen, growing up in a small Colorado town close to Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear weapons plant once designated "the most contaminated site in America." It's the story of a childhood and adolescence in the shadow of the Cold War, in a landscape at once startlingly beautiful and--unknown to those who lived there--tainted with invisible yet deadly particles of plutonium. It's also a book about the destructive power of secrets--both family and government. Her father's hidden liquor bottles, the strange cancers in children in the neighborhood, the truth about what was made at Rocky Flats (cleaning supplies, her mother guessed)--best not to inquire too deeply into any of it. But as Iversen grew older, she began to ask questions. She learned about the infamous 1969 Mother's Day fire, in which a few scraps of plutonium spontaneously ignited and--despite the desperate efforts of firefighters--came perilously close to a "criticality," the deadly blue flash that signals a nuclear chain reaction. Intense heat and radiation almost melted the roof, which nearly resulted in an explosion that would have had devastating consequences for the entire Denver metro area. Yet the only mention of the fire was on page 28 of the Rocky Mountain News, underneath a photo of the Pet of the Week. In her early thirties, Iversen even worked at Rocky Flats for a time, typing up memos in which accidents were always called "incidents."And as this memoir unfolds, it reveals itself as a brilliant work of investigative journalism--a detailed and shocking account of the government's sustained attempt to conceal the effects of the toxic and radioactive waste released by Rocky Flats, and of local residents' vain attempts to seek justice in court. Here, too, are vivid portraits of former Rocky Flats workers--from the healthy, who regard their work at the plant with pride and patriotism, to the ill or dying, who battle for compensation for cancers they got on the job. Based on extensive interviews, FBI and EPA documents, and class-action testimony, this taut, beautifully written book promises to have a very long half-life.

Full Belly: Good Eats for a Healthy Pregnancy

by Shirley Fan Tara Mataraza Desmond

For the Most Delicious--and Healthiest--Pregnancy Fuel! As a trained chef, Tara Mataraza Desmond knows how to cook--and eat. But when she became pregnant, all bets were off, and seemingly all food was suspect. Deli meat, raw milk cheese, and alcohol were out, but what is in? Lists of "verboten” foods were easy to find, but healthful, doable meals that would appeal to a pregnant woman’s finicky appetite and also feed her baby in the best way were not. Relying on prenatal vitamins didn’t sound very satisfying for this ambitious cook, who is most at ease in front of the stove. So with registered dietitian Shirley Fan, Desmond put together delicious, healthy recipes with the baby bump in mind. Sections include "What to Eat When You Don't Want to Eat," for that queasy and crucial first trimester, while the six chapters of recipes are accompanied by nutritional facts and bonus info to take you through all nine months (and beyond). An Iced Coffee Thickshake and a slice of Nectarine Pecan Baked Oatmeal can start the morning off right, while the Trail Mix Bars are perfect for a pick-me-up snack. Options like Cranberry Pistachio Salad with Chive Vinaigrette, Pork and Peanut Noodles, and Butternut Ragù Lasagna (which does double-duty as a great freezer-friendly meal for after the baby arrives) fill out lunch and dinner. All of the recipes even benefit the post-pregnancy bod (and feed the rest of the family) by focusing on whole foods that deliver flavor without too much fat, sugar, and empty calories that make baby weight hard to shed. Full Belly is a cookbook designed to foster a healthy, happy pregnancy--but you’ll be coming back to the delicious recipes long after baby arrives!

Fulcanelli and the Alchemical Revival: The Man Behind the Mystery of the Cathedrals

by Geneviève Dubois

Sheds new light on the identity of the alchemist Fulcanelli• Provides new understanding of the relationships between the most important figures of the esoteric milieu of Paris in the first half of the 20th century• Includes a wealth of rarely seen documents, photos, and lettersFulcanelli, operative alchemist and author of The Mystery of the Cathedrals and The Dwellings of the Philosophers--two of the most important esoteric works of the twentieth century--remains himself a mystery. The true identity of the man who allegedly succeeded in creating the philosopher’s stone has never been discovered, despite ardent searches by many--even the OSS (the wartime U.S. intelligence agency, later to become the CIA) claimed to have looked for him following the end of World War II. Geneviève Dubois looks at the esoteric milieu of Paris at the turn of the century, a time that witnessed a great revival of the alchemical tradition, and investigates some of its salient personalities. Could one of these have been this enigmatic man, reported to have last appeared in Seville, Spain, in 1952 when he would have been 113 years of age?The trail followed by the author encounters such figures as Papus, René Guénon, Schwaller de Lubicz, Pierre Dujols, Eugene Canseliet, and Jean-Julien Champagne. Working from rare documents, letters, and photos, Dubois suggests that one of these men could have been hiding his activity behind the pseudonym of Fulcanelli or that Fulcanelli may even have been a composite fabricated by several of these individuals working together. Beyond its attempt to reveal the actual identity of Fulcanelli, Fulcanelli and the Alchemical Revival also presents an explanation of the alchemical doctrine and reveals the unsuspected relationships among the important twentieth-century truth seekers it highlights.

by Solitude of Alanna

Fucking Daphne: Mostly True Stories and Fictions

by Daphne Gottlieb

When Daphne Gottlieb first found herself the character in someone else's story she was intrigued; over time, as she appeared in more and more stories, she started to wonder about the implications of what was real and what wasn't. Did it matter that there were published stories of her having sex in bathrooms, vacant parking lots, on the balcony at a party in an old bordello? Did it matter whether or not they were true? This question sparked the idea for Fucking Daphne, a collection that blurs the lines between reality and fiction and begs the question "who is the real Daphne?" A pill-popping wild child? A soft place to fall with a broken heart? A dreadlocked vixen?Contributors include Hanne Blank, Stephen Elliot, Sarah Katherine Lewis, and Ariel Gore, who describe, watch, and engage with a character that is not Daphne Gottlieb; Daphne is a projection, a fantasy, a zeitgeist. We are all a multitude of people in bed. We are all Daphne.Harnessing the playfulness of the hoax, the seductiveness of literature, and the edginess of the avant-garde, Fucking Daphne is unique in a culture hungry for sex, information, and most of all, understanding.
