Spiritual Help for Daily Living

by Andrew Murray

"Some time ago I (Andrew Murray) was asked to write a series of articles under the heading, "Aids to Devotion," for the Lovedale Christian Express. My mind was at the time much occupied with the Epistle to the Ephesians, and I thought it might be possible to connect its teaching with the effort to give some help for the quiet hour. This led to my writing two of the introductory chapters, and the twelve that deal with the chief thoughts of the Epistle. I am deeply conscious of how defective they are and how little able I have been to satisfy myself in giving expression to what I think I have seen of the treasures that God has stored away in this Epistle for His Church. I have nevertheless ventured on their publication in this little book, in the hope that God may use them to help some of His children to realize what the standard of the true Christian life is as it is set before us in the Epistle, and what absolute divine assurance it gives us that God is able and willing to make all that it contains true in our experience. I send this little book out with the prayer with which Paul wrote his Epistle, "that God, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Himself." Without that Spirit, specially sought and received, and yielded to in great teachableness, the truths of the Epistle will remain a hidden mystery. With that teaching, we shall "be filled with the knowledge of God's Will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding," we shall learn to know what passes knowledge, and be brought to experience that His power is able actually to do in us exceeding abundantly above what we can ask or think." The notes are instructive and have tips for those in ministry.

Drawing on more than thirty years' worth of scientific research, Dr. Michael T. Murray has assembled irrefutable evidence that the pharmaceutical treatments for the most common diseases that plague our society are often ineffective and result in serious, widespread side effects -- the existence of which is frequently hidden from the public. What the Drug Companies Won't Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn't Know offers a close look at the way that the American healthcare system has evolved in the last fifty years and examines the roles of the FDA, the pharmaceutical monopolies, and the medical community in producing what has become a failing healthcare system with little accountability. Dr. Murray illustrates how a nationwide dependence on pills has hobbled health in America and resulted in a national wellness epidemic as lifestyle, ignorance, and politics collide in our medicine cabinets. At a time when adverse reactions to over-the-counter and prescription drugs are currently estimated to kill more than 100,000 Americans a year (making this the fourth leading cause of death in the United States behind cancer, heart disease, and stroke) and when Americans use more than 40 percent of all of the prescription drugs produced in the world each year (according to the World Health Organization) yet are forty-second in terms of life expectancy, we must radically reevaluate the way that we take care of ourselves. Both a call to arms and a practical guide to the natural treatments that could revolutionize both your health and the well-being of the entire nation, What the Drug Companies Won't Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn't Know provides clear guidance on the steps needed to help you lead a fitter, happier, and healthier life.

Health and Prosperity: Efficient Health Systems for Thriving Nations in the 21st Century

by Fabrice Murtin

Murtin examines the long-term causes of health improvements over the last two centuries. Focusing on the relative importance of income and education, Murtin finds that education alone accounts for the bulk of health improvements since 1870, and explains the strong correlation between longevity and income, which is highly correlated with education. Conversely, the book shows that progress in longevity has had dramatic consequences on societies, as it reduced fertility, triggered the spread of education, spurred economic growth, and improved 'prosperity' in a way that is comparable to the long-term rise in income. Health and Prosperity sheds light on the real cost of health systems in the 21st century.

Contradictions: Neuroscience and Religion (Springer Praxis Books)

by José M. Musacchio

"Contradictions" is a general interest book that exposes the incompatibility between popular religious beliefs and the scientific view of human nature. It begins with a survey of the evolution of religions and their continuing, often irrational, influences in modern society. Then, based on his long experience in neuroscience, the author takes issue with Decartes about the duality of body and soul. He presents case studies of patients with brain diseases and from these deduces that the soul, far from being separate and supernatural, is no more or less than our way of experiencing our brains ... and which correspondingly disintegrates when they do. Convincing clinical findings and powerful arguments about the universality of truth make this book a bold contribution to the debate about belief and religion in the modern world.

The Structure House Weight Loss Plan

by Gerard J. Musante

REDEFINE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD -- AND REACH YOUR IDEAL WEIGHT! Obesity expert Dr. Gerard Musante and his residential weight loss center, Structure House, have helped more than thirty thousand people lose weight. A stay at Structure House costs thousands of dollars. Now Dr. Musante's innovative ideas and effective treatment methods are yours for the price of this book. IT'S NOT FOOD THAT MAKES YOU FAT -- IT'S YOUR EATING BEHAVIOR. During his thirty years of practice, Dr. Musante has shown that it is your relationship with food that determines your ability to reach your ideal weight. His system targets behaviors resulting from habit, boredom, or stress that lead to unstructured eating -- eating for nonnutritional reasons -- and presents concrete methods for designing new, structured eating patterns. You'll learn to isolate your unhealthy eating, recognize and neutralize the food triggers that cause your unstructured eating, and stop using food to satisfy needs other than hunger. Dr. Musante's method gets to the root of these behaviors by completely reconstructing your daily experience with food and therefore the choices you make about what to eat. The Structure House Weight Loss Plan presents Dr. Musante's Structured Eating system. You will learn to eat nutritious food in appropriate portions three times a day -- the food that you need to meet your nutritional requirements and to reach and maintain the level of weight you desire. The Structured Eating program is presented in three sections. The first section, "Get Structured," guides you through making the changes that will increase success, including understanding your eating behaviors that emerge from habit, boredom, and stress; learning how the organization of your refrigerator and cabinets can lead to weight loss or weight gain; and analyzing the attitudes toward food of the people who surround you at work and at home. In the second section, "Be Structured," you learn about food choices; meal planning, including grocery shopping and food preparation; and identifying the right kinds of exercise that will enhance your success. In the final section, "Stay Structured," Dr. Musante shares all the secrets of lifestyle change that will help you take and, more important, keep the weight off. The strategies are both large and small, simple and profound, immediate and long lasting. Using the Structure House approach, you'll be in control of food -- not controlled by it. You'll gain power by taking responsibility -- and then you can take credit for your successes.

Stop Missing Your Life: How to be Deeply Present in an Un-Present World

by Cory Muscara

Many of us live on autopilot, often so guarded that we don't experience the richness that life has to offer. How can we find real happiness amid the chaos, so we don't reach the end of our life and feel like we missed it? In Stop Missing Your Life, mindfulness teacher Cory Muscara takes us on a journey into the heart of what is required for real change, growth, and happiness. He exposes how the phrase "be present" has become little more than a platitude, imbued with the misguided message to be present just for the sake of being present, and reveals how to achieve true Presence: a quality of being that is unmistakably attractive about a person, and one that only comes when we've peeled back the layers of guarding that prevent us from being our full, honest, and integrated selves in the world.Muscara shows how we build internal walls, what he describes as a "Pain Box" inhibiting us from living a deeply connected and meaningful life. He offers a four-part FACE model (Focus, Allow, Curiosity, and Embodiment) that helps chip away at those walls and builds our capacity to experience the richness of our lives Stop Missing Your Life ultimately teaches how we can find peace in the chaos and become better people for our families, our communities, and our world.

Cunt: A Declaration of Independence

by Inga Muscio

An ancient title of respect for women, the word "cunt" long ago veered off this noble path. Inga Muscio traces the road from honor to expletive, giving women the motivation and tools to claim "cunt" as a positive and powerful force in their lives. In this fully revised edition, she explores, with candidness and humor, such traditional feminist issues as birth control, sexuality, jealousy between women, and prostitution with a fresh attitude for a new generation of women. Sending out a call for every woman to be the Cuntlovin' Ruler of Her Sexual Universe, Muscio stands convention on its head by embracing all things cunt-related. This edition is fully revised with updated resources, a new foreword from sexual pioneer Betty Dodson, and a new afterword by the author. "Bright, sharp, empowering, long-lasting, useful, sexy...."--San Francisco Chronicle. "... Cunt provides fertile ground for psychological growth."--San Francisco Bay Guardian. "Cunt does for feminism what smoothies did for high-fiber diets--it reinvents the oft-indigestible into something sweet and delicious."--Bust Magazine.

Thinking about Oneself: From Nonconceptual Content to the Concept of a Self (The\mit Press Ser.)

by Kristina Musholt

A novel theory of self-consciousness and its development that integrates philosophical considerations with recent findings in the empirical sciences. In this book, Kristina Musholt offers a novel theory of self-consciousness, understood as the ability to think about oneself. Traditionally, self-consciousness has been central to many philosophical theories. More recently, it has become the focus of empirical investigation in psychology and neuroscience. Musholt draws both on philosophical considerations and on insights from the empirical sciences to offer a new account of self-consciousness—the ability to think about ourselves that is at the core of what makes us human. Examining theories of nonconceptual content developed in recent work in the philosophy of cognition, Musholt proposes a model for the gradual transition from self-related information implicit in the nonconceptual content of perception and other forms of experience to the explicit representation of the self in conceptual thought. A crucial part of this model is an analysis of the relationship between self-consciousness and intersubjectivity. Self-consciousness and awareness of others, Musholt argues, are two sides of the same coin. After surveying the philosophical problem of self-consciousness, the notion of nonconceptual content, and various proposals for the existence of nonconceptual self-consciousness, Musholt argues for a non-self-representationalist theory, according to which the self is not part of the representational content of perception and bodily awareness but part of the mode of presentation. She distinguishes between implicitly self-related information and explicit self-representation, and describes the transitions from the former to the latter as arising from a complex process of self–other differentiation. By this account, both self-consciousness and intersubjectivity develop in parallel.

The Quest for Drug Control: Politics and Federal Policy in a Period of Increasing Substance Abuse, 1963-1981

by David F. Musto Pamela Korsmeyer

Between 1960 and 1980 various administrations attempted to deal with a rising tide of illicit drug use that was unprecedented in U. S. history. This valuable book provides a close look at the politics and bureaucracy of drug control policy during those years, showing how they changed during the presidencies of Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter and how much current federal drug-control policies owe to those earlier efforts. David F. Musto, M. D. , and Pamela Korsmeyer base their analysis on a unique collection of 5,000 pages of White House documents from the period, all of which are included on a searchable CD-ROM that accompanies the book. These documents reveal the intense debates that took place over drug policy. They show, for example, that staffers and cabinet officers who were charged with narcotics policy were often influenced by the cultural currents of their times, and when the public reacted in an extreme fashion to rising drug use, officials were disinclined to adopt modified policies that might have been more realistic. Musto and Korsmeyer's investigation into the decision-making processes that shaped past drug control efforts in the United States provides essential background as creative approaches to the drug problem are sought for the future.

The Most Anticipated Memoirs of 2020, She Reads • Bay Area Authors to Read This Summer, 7X7 A literary memoir of one woman's journey from wife to warrior, in the vein of breakout hits like Cheryl Strayed's Wild and Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle. At thirty-six years old, Caitlin Myer is ready to start a family with her husband. She has left behind the restrictive confines of her Mormon upbringing and early sexual trauma and believes she is now living her happily ever after . . . when her body betrays her. In a single week, she suffers the twin losses of a hysterectomy and the death of her mother, and she is jolted into a terrible awakening that forces her to reckon with her past—and future. This is the story of one woman&’s lifelong combat with a culture—her &“escape&” from religion at age twenty, only to find herself similarly entrapped in the gender conventions of the secular culture at large, conventions that teach girls and women to shape themselves to please men, to become good wives and mothers. The biblical characters Yael and Judith, wives who became assassins, become her totems as she evolves from wifely submission to warrior independence. An electric debut that loudly redefines our notions of womanhood, Wiving grapples with the intersections of religion and sex, trauma and love, sickness and mental illness, and a woman&’s harrowing enlightenment. Building on the literary tradition of difficult women who struggle to be heard, Wiving introduces an urgent, striking voice to the scene of contemporary women&’s writing at a time when we must explode old myths and build new stories in their place.

It's Probably Nothing...*

by Micki Myers

Daring, sly, and unlike any other book you've read, this memoir-in-poems tackles cancer with a bawdy wit guaranteed to make you laugh your wig off.As a vibrant woman in her early forties, mother of two, poet, artist, and teacher, Micki Myers decided to confront her cancer diagnosis head on with the sharpest tools in her arsenal: namely, her sense of humor and unbridled poetic license. The result is a charming, poignant, laugh-out-loud collection that hits all the highs (morphine) and lows (everything else) of being a cancer patient and surviving with your spirit intact (even if your boobs are not). It's Probably Nothing... is the perfect gift for a friend in crisis, providing laughter, wisdom, and much-needed perspective. From losing your hair (even, ahem, down there) and gaining two bouncy silicone strangers, to the pitfalls of marijuana therapy and the endless chemo-room muzak "that makes you think/survival might be overrrated," Myers reminds you that you're not alone and that it's okay to laugh.

Why Is God Laughing?

by Mike Myers Deepak Chopra

In this refreshing new take on spirituality, bestselling author Deepak Chopra uses a fictional tale of a comedian and his unlikely mentor to show us a path back to hope, joy, and even enlightenment--with a lot of laughter along the way. Meet Mickey Fellows. A successful L.A. comedian, he's just a regular guy, with his fair share of fears, egocentricities, and addictions. After his father's death, Mickey meets a mysterious stranger named Francisco, who changes his life forever. The two begin an ongoing discussion about the true nature of being. Reluctantly at first, Mickey accepts the stranger's help and starts to explore his own life in an effort to answer the riddles Francisco poses. Mickey starts to look at those aspects of himself that he has hidden behind a wall of wisecracks all his life. Eventually Mickey realizes that authentic humor opens him up to the power of spirit--allowing him to finally make real connections with people. After taking the reader on a journey with Mickey, Chopra then spells out the lessons that Mickey's story imparts to us: ten reasons to be optimistic, even in our challenging world. Chopra believes that the healthiest response to life is laughter from the heart, and even in the face of global turmoil, we can cultivate an internal sense of optimism. Rich with humor and practical advice, Why Is God Laughing? shows us without a doubt that there is always a reason to be grateful, that every possibility holds the promise of abundance, and that obstacles are simply opportunities in disguise. In the end, we really don't need a reason to be happy. The power of happiness lies within each of us, just waiting to be unleashed. And Mickey Fellows's journey shows us the way. From the Hardcover edition.
