The Joy of Well-Being: A Practical Guide to a Happy, Healthy, and Long Life

by Jason Wachob Colleen Wachob

On your journey toward a more health-conscious life, you've likely been bombarded by an overwhelming amount of information-from the Kardashian-like wellness influencers who (unrealistically) insist upon sustainably sourced Epsom salt baths every night, to the elite longevity optimizers who measure their lactate levels after a workout. The echo chamber of the internet, and social media algorithms that favor polarizing opinions to drive views and engagement, have hijacked our understanding of health. No matter which corner of the wellness world you inhabit, our social feeds are filled with advice that presumes we all have the same amount of time, money, and resources. In this saturated landscape, how can you avoid the potential scams and dodge the doctors-turned-celebrities to find what really works for you?Over the past decade, Colleen and Jason Wachob, co-founders of mindbodygreen, have cultivated a leading wellness lifestyle media brand for everyone seeking to cut through this noise, and live a happier, healthier, and greener lifestyle. The Joy of Well-Being is a distillation of almost fifteen years of this experience on the forefront of the well-being conversation: they've done the legwork so you don't have to. The Wachobs are a product of their mentors and years of working with hundreds of the world's most brilliant well-being minds, PhDs, MDs, therapists, movement specialists, spiritual leaders, and journalists. They've developed ways to discern meaningful points of information amidst the chaos, an act they consider both a science and an art. The Joy of Well-Being is more than a book, it's a reawakening, marking a crucial shift away from the do-this-then-do-that paradigm, to cultivating a joyful lifestyle that centers each individual, and their own health and happiness. True well-being isn't something you chase, it is something you weave together, as each new day presents an opportunity to make choices that support feeling good in your body, in your relationships, and in your life.

The Microgenetic Theory of Mind and Brain: Selected Essays in Process Psychology

by Jason W. Brown

This book asks where ideas, objects and feelings come from and how they arise via an exploration of the nature of subjective experience and its relation to the world. Seeking an explanation for the experience of subjective duration and the present and in contrast to the conception of mental events as non-temporal logical solids, it explores a diachronic processual theory founded on psychological data and clinical observation that provides an explanatory “system” of thought adequate to the phenomena it is called on to explain. The author focuses on the intra-psychic sources and nature of subjective experience, with the intent of examining a variety of phenomena from the standpoint of microgenetic theory. The chapters deal with the origins of human subjectivity and the epochal nature of time and duration, change and the relevance of a theory of the mental state to dream and the waking present. Based on speculative psychology that flows from case studies in neuropsychology and concepts in process philosophy, it advances a theory of mind and brain that brings together previous, fragmentary research studies on this topic.

The Germ Files

by Jason Tetro

Does for microbiology what Dr. Joe Schwarcz's Brain Fuel did for chemistry: informs and entertains with accessible mini-essays.Jason Tetro, author of The Germ Code, is back with a very different book but the same message: microbes are amazing, they deserve our respect and we should learn to live with them in harmony. The way we feel, think, look and even interact with the world is affected by the germs in and around us. Despite their reputation for making us ill, germs also keep us alive and healthy. They even offer us relationship advice: the millions of bacteria shared in a first kiss send the brain strong messages about compatibility. In a series of brief, brilliant essays, arranged into themes such as health, child care, sex and the environment, Jason Tetro is here again to advise us and amaze us about germs. They enjoy breast milk, and help look after our babies in return for it; feed them artificial sweeteners, though, and they're capable of showing their displeasure by making us put on weight. If we upset their balance, they can make us depressed or encourage us to drink too much and eat junk food. One way of maintaining that balance is for us to take probiotics--but do they really stay in the body long enough to do any good? Yes--so long as you choose the type that bribes the immune system with a selection of rich chemicals. Some items are purely fun, some are there to boggle the mind, some might just save your life. All are designed to improve our relations with germs for the benefit of human health and happiness. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Thoughts Are Not the Enemy

by Jason Siff

A revolutionary new approach to meditation: a mindfulness of thinking that accepts and investigates the thoughts that arise as you meditate--from the author of Unlearning Meditation. In most forms of meditation, the meditator is instructed to let go of thoughts as they arise. As a result, thinking is often taken, unnecessarily, to be something misguided or evil. This approach is misguided, says Jason Siff. In fact, if we allow thoughts to arise and become mindful of the thoughts themselves, we gain tranquillity and insight just as in other methods without having to reject our natural mental processes. And by observing the thoughts themselves with mindfulness and curiosity, we can learn a good deal about ourselves in the process.

Unlearning Meditation: What to Do When the Instructions Get In the Way

by Jason Siff

When we meditate, our minds often want to do something other than the meditation instructions we've been taught. When that happens repeatedly, we may feel frustrated to the point of abandoning meditation altogether. Jason Siff invites us to approach meditation in a new way, one that honors the part of us that doesn't want to do the instructions. He teaches us how to become more tolerant of intense emotions, sleepiness, compelling thoughts, fantasies--the whole array of inner experiences that are usually considered hindrances to meditation. The meditation practice he presents in Unlearning Meditation is gentle, flexible, permissive, and honest, and it's been wonderfully effective for opening up meditation for people who thought they could never meditate, as well as for injecting a renewed energy for practice into the lives of seasoned practitioners.

Novel Bodies: Disability and Sexuality in Eighteenth-Century British Literature (Transits: Literature, Thought & Culture 1650-1850)

by Jason S. Farr

Novel Bodies examines how disability shapes the British literary history of sexuality. Jason Farr shows that various eighteenth-century novelists represent disability and sexuality in flexible ways to reconfigure the political and social landscapes of eighteenth-century Britain. In imagining the lived experience of disability as analogous to—and as informed by—queer genders and sexualities, the authors featured in Novel Bodies expose emerging ideas of able-bodiedness and heterosexuality as interconnected systems that sustain dominant models of courtship, reproduction, and degeneracy. Further, Farr argues that they use intersections of disability and queerness to stage an array of contemporaneous debates covering topics as wide-ranging as education, feminism, domesticity, medicine, and plantation life. In his close attention to the fiction of Eliza Haywood, Samuel Richardson, Sarah Scott, Maria Edgeworth, and Frances Burney, Farr demonstrates that disabled and queer characters inhabit strict social orders in unconventional ways, and thus opened up new avenues of expression for readers from the eighteenth century forward. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Sexual Wholeness in Marriage: An LDS Perspective on Integrating Sexuality and Spirituality in our Marriages

by Jason S. Carroll Dean M. Busby Chelom Leavitt

Sexuality can be one of the most perplexing and yet rewarding areas of life for spiritually minded individuals. In this book the authors present a pathway to building positive sexual attitudes and a healthy sexual relationship with a spouse that can be enriching and fulfilling on the spiritual journey of this life. In addition, they address many of the common questions LDS individuals have about sex that may have been adequately answered by existing sources, including: How can couples manage their often very different levels of interest in sex? What types of sexual behaviors are appropriate for married LDS couples? How can couples keep their sexual relationship creative and enjoyable over decades of marriage? What are the unique sexual needs of women and men in marriage? How can couples be better prepared to start off their marriage on the right foot when they are sexually inexperienced?
