Oilseed Meal as a Sustainable Contributor to Plant-Based Protein: Paving the Way Towards Circular Economy and Nutritional Security

by Manoj Kumar Sneh Punia Bangar Parmjit S. Panesar

Protein is one of the most important ingredients of the human diet and is considered crucial for the growth development of all age groups. Studies have set the recommended dietary allowance of protein as 0.8 g/kg body weight per day for healthy adults. The world population is projected to reach 10 billion by 2050 and it will be a significant challenge for the scientific community to overcome the growing demand for protein. The results of global warming, from shifting climactic conditions to unpredictable rainfalls, have further complicated the situation. The search for alternative protein sources that can be both sustainable and renewable is one of the major challenges in the face of potential mass protein malnutrition. Oilseed crops such as soybean, mustard, oil palm, peanuts, cottonseed, flax seed, coconut, canola and sesame are mainly cultivated for the extraction of cooking oil and are underutilized as sources of protein. Oilseed meals contain as much as 50% protein but remain under-valued since they are traditionally utilized as fertilizer or as feed for livestock animals. Numerous recent studies show that oilseed meal sources can be utilized as a sustainable and renewable source of protein and could play a major role in alleviating the global problem of protein malnutrition. Oilseed Meal as Sustainable Contributor to Plant-Based Protein explores oilseed crops that can contribute towards the regular supply of protein in an increasing population and changing climate. Each chapter focuses on a specific oilseed crop including comprehensive coverage of the processing and extraction specifics for each crop plus their amino acid profiles and other functional properties. The application of oilseed proteins for production of bioactive peptides and preparation of value-added products is also covered. This text is useful for food scientists and researchers seeking an updated single source for coverage on all the most important oilseed crops andtheir potential roles in combating protein shortages in a growing world population.

* INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER *The debut cookbook from benny blanco—pop music super-producer, artist, actor on FXX’s Dave, and consummate food freak—teaches you everything you need to know about cooking, enjoying life, and throwing the greatest dinner party of all time.Hi, I’m benny blanco. I’m in a television show with my best friend Dave and I probably produced most of the songs you have heard on the radio from 2008 until now. When I was thirteen, my friend got a George Foreman Grill and it changed my life forever. We would invite friends over, get stoned, and make the most elaborate sandwiches our prepubescent minds could fathom. I became obsessed with food and cooking for friends. I know what you are going to say, and I get it. Cooking is scary. But I promise you, once you get into it, it will be your new addiction. Slicing an onion is like taking a Xanax to me. I made this cookbook to teach you everything I know about food, cooking, and throwing the greatest dinner party of all time. There are the basics to get your kitchen ready, a little advice from my expert friends, then all of the dinner party menus I love to make, like: 5 Dishes to Get You Laid and One for the Morning AfterI Wish I Were an Italian GrandmaTake Me to the Cheesy RodeoF*ck Morton’s Steakhouse Which are filled with insane recipes like: Lose Your Mind Lobster Rolls“I Might Go Vegetarian” Veggie SandwichChicken Cutlets with Honey, Peppers, and Parm“I Hope We Didn’t Make a Baby” Breakfast Burrito. I’ve been told some of the finest stories over meals. I’ve laughed so hard I thought I was going to actually die. I’ve fallen in love—sometimes with the food, sometimes with the person across the table. I’ve cried in good ways, and I’ve cried in bad ways. I hope you’ve been lucky enough to have all these same memories and then some. But if you haven’t, I can make you a promise. If you follow these three simple steps, it will all become a reality: Open this book. Open your heart. And open wide, baby.

Organizing Eating: Communicating for Equity Across U.S. Food Systems (Routledge Research in Communication Studies)

by Sarah E. Dempsey

This book develops "organizing eating" as an organizational-communication centered framework for understanding how communication and power combine to actively shape eating and working in the U.S. food system. Drawing together established scholars, the book sheds light on how the interconnected aspects of power are communicative in nature, shaping and constraining the possibilities for organizing across the food system. The chapters provide grounded insight into the role of racism, corporate and state power, food cooperatives, urban farm systems, food policy, and labor practices, drawing attention to the pathways needed to pursue more equitable food systems. Providing readers with a set of useful critical conceptual tools and an understanding of communication frameworks, chapters identify common principles for critical organizing within the food movement and addresses the relevance of the COVID-19 pandemic and the national uprising against anti-Black violence for understanding the urgent possibilities of food justice. This cohesive collection of cutting-edge scholarship will be of interest to organizational communication scholars, critical/cultural communication scholars, environmental communication scholars, and health communication scholars; and the interdisciplinary fields of environmental studies, agriculture and food studies, and organization and labor studies.

A Parent’s Guide to Childhood Cancer: Supporting Your Child with Integrative Therapies Based on a Metabolic Approach

by Dagmara Beine

"Indispensable . . . Dr. Beine provides a practical primer on integrative cancer therapies for children based on a metabolic framework of understanding the disease. I can’t recommend [this book] enough.”—Chris Kresser, MS, LAc, founder of Kresser Institute; New York Times bestselling author An invaluable, revolutionary, research-based resource for parents—grounded in nutrition, detoxification, and mental wellbeing, while aiming to reduce suffering and promote long-term recovery. “Your child has cancer.” Every day, forty-three American families hear these words, thrusting them headlong into the terrifying and unfamiliar territory of pediatric oncology. In A Parent’s Guide to Childhood Cancer, pediatric oncology specialist Dagmara Beine guides readers through the most difficult scenario a parent will ever face—a child’s diagnosis of life-threatening disease—and argues that the greatest tragedy of conventional oncology is its failure to incorporate safe, effective, and potentially life-saving integrative therapies. In A Parent’s Guide to Childhood Cancer, Beine teaches parents how to effectively incorporate these integrative therapies alongside conventional oncology, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Beine’s approach is grounded in the metabolic approach to cancer—pioneered by the work of Dr. Nasha Winters—applied to a wildly underserved cancer patient population: children. Topics include: Understanding diagnoses and how to go about seeking a second opinion Assembling a medical team that includes both conventional and integrative oncology experts Essential tests—both conventional and integrative—and how to interpret them How to develop a metabolically healthy, anti-cancer nutrition plan Integrative therapies for specific diagnoses and reducing side effects How to harness post-treatment detoxification and gut-healing protocols The critical importance of, sleep, movement, stress reduction, and time outside Plus much more Therapies covered include: Mistletoe N-Acetyl Cysteine IV Vitamin C Cannabinoids Glutamine Glutathione Low-Dose Naltrexone Melatonin Hyperbaric Oxygen And more With cancer, Beine says, there is no silver bullet. But with a metabolic approach and the wise integration of simple and effective complementary therapies under the supervision of a metabolic oncology practitioner, there is a path forward to what every parent wants for their sons and daughters: a happy childhood.

The Paris Novel: The gorgeously uplifting new novel about living - and eating - deliciously

by Ruth Reichl

'No one writes about food like Ruth Reichl... I consider her essential nourishment.' NIGELLA LAWSON Ripping open the envelope, she read Celia's last words to her. There was just one line written on the paper: 'Go to Paris.' The last word anyone would use to describe Stella St. Vincent is adventurous. She's perfectly comfortable with the familiar, strict routines of her life as a copyeditor in New York. Or at least, she is until she receives a mysterious note from her late mother and a one-way plane ticket to Paris. Alone and overwhelmed in a foreign city, Stella avoids new people and ventures out as little as possible. But then she meets Jules, an octogenarian art collector with very different ideas about how she should spend her time in the French capital. And to start with, there's a vintage Dior dress with her name on it. Somewhere between the cramped shelves of Shakespeare and Company bookshop, the crisp tablecloths of the Brasserie Les Deux Magots and a pile of discarded paintings at a busy flea market, long-buried truths about Stella's own past begin to emerge. Soon she starts to wonder if there might not have been more to her mother's suggestion than she first suspected... 'Ruth Reichl is one of our greatest storytellers. No one writes as warmly and engagingly about the all-important intersection of food, life, love, and loss.' ALICE WATERS

Peasant Politics of the Twenty-First Century: Transnational Social Movements and Agrarian Change (Cornell Series on Land: New Perspectives on Territory, Development, and Environment)

by Marc Edelman

Peasant Politics of the Twenty-First Century illuminates the transnational agrarian movements that are remaking rural society and the world's food and agriculture systems. Marc Edelman explains how peasant movements are staking their claims from farmers' fields to massive protests around the world, shaping heated debates over peasants' rights and the very category of "peasant" within the agrarian organizations and in the United Nations.Edelman chronicles the rise of these movements, their objectives, and their alliances with environmental, human rights, women's, and food justice groups. The book scrutinizes high-profile activists and the forgotten genealogies and policy implications of foundational analytical frameworks like "moral economy," and concepts, such as "food sovereignty" and "civil society." Peasant Politics of the Twenty-First Century charts the struggle of agrarian movements in the face of land grabbing, counter agrarian reform, and a looming climate catastrophe, and celebrates engaged research from Central America to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Potential of Cyanobacteria

by Muhammad Aamer Mehmood Pradeep Verma Maulin P. Shah Michael J. Betenbaugh

Cyanobacteria are the extraordinary microbes that are believed to have started life on Earth. It's been billions of years since they colonized this planet. Now, the question arises, what has made them so successful? The answer to this question lies in their remarkable potential to survive unfavorable environments, their substantial ability to fix the atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis, and their amazing secondary metabolites having antioxidant, osmo-protectants, and stress-tolerance abilities. Research on cyanobacteria has shown that these secondary metabolites and the substantial photosynthetic rates of cyanobacteria can be exploited for environmental, industrial, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications. This book “Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Potential of Cyanobacteria” is a collection of 14 book chapters that have covered almost all aspects related to the opportunities, challenges, and potential applications whileemploying cyanobacteria as feedstock for various industrial and environmental applications with a special focus on pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. Some sections have also covered the enhanced biosynthesis, extraction, storage, and marketing of the cyanobacterial bioactive compounds (phycobilins, carotenoids, fatty acids, amino acids), and applications of cyanobacteria as food/feed of the future. We believe that this book will provide substantial learning opportunities to the readers including graduate students, academicians, phycologists, policymakers, environmental entrepreneurs, and industrialists. This book could be included in SDG 12 publications.
