Classroom Instruction That Works With English Language Learners
by Jane Hill Kathleen FlynnAs more and more English language learners (ELLs) are included in mainstream classrooms, what can we do to ensure that they understand academic content and develop their English language skills? To answer this question, authors Jane Hill and Kathleen Flynn have examined decades of research, interviewed mainstream teachers with ELLs in their classrooms, and reviewed the classroom recommendations from Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock's seminal Classroom Instruction That Works (2001) through an ELL lens. The result is Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners—-a comprehensive guide to helping elementary school students at all levels of English language acquisition succeed.

The strategies discussed in the book include homework and practice, summarization and note taking, and use of nonlinguistic representations, among many others. For each strategy, the authors provide a summary of the research, detailed examples of how to modify the strategy for use with ELLs in mainstream classrooms, and teacher accounts of implementation. Because ELLs face cultural hurdles as well as linguistic ones, this book also shows teachers how to glean insight into students' backgrounds and address the cultural biases inherent in many classroom practices.
Accommodating English language learners is one of the greatest challenges educators face today. Just as different levels of fluency require different approaches, so too do different backgrounds and languages. This practical, research-based book gives elementary school teachers the guidance they need to help ELLs of all nationalities thrive alongside their English-dominant peers.
Interlanguage Pragmatics: Exploring Institutional Talk (Second Language Acquisition Research Series)
by Kathleen Bardovi-Harlig Beverly S. HartfordThis volume brings conversational analysis into the study of second language pragmatics as an analytic paradigm. A well-regarded team of researchers addresses a difficult area for the interlanguage pragmatics research community--the balance between experimental method and the use of conversational data. Institutional talk provides authentic and consequential talk. The goal of the book is to demonstrate how the investigation of institutional talk balances the researcher's need for comparable and replicable interactions with the need to observe authentic outcomes. The chapters present empirical studies based on quantitative and qualitative analyses, which are carefully illustrated by the real-world variables that each institution controls. The chapters span a range of institutions, including the university writing center, hotels, secondary schools, and employment offices. The variables examined include the traditional ILP variables, such as status, directness, and social distance, as well as new concepts like trust, authority, equality and discourse style.

Dreaming in Hindi: Coming Awake in Another Language
by Katherine Russell RichAn eye-opening and courageous memoir that explores what learning a new language can teach us about distant worlds and, ultimately, ourselves. After miraculously surviving a serious illness, Katherine Rich found herself at an impasse in her career as a magazine editor. She spontaneously accepted a freelance writing assignment to go to India, where she found herself thunderstruck by the place and the language, and before she knew it she was on her way to Udaipur, a city in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, in order to learn Hindi. Rich documents her experiences--ranging from the bizarre to the frightening to the unexpectedly exhilarating--using Hindi as the lens through which she is given a new perspective not only on India, but on the radical way the country and the language itself were changing her. Fascinated by the process, she went on to interview linguistics experts around the world, reporting back from the frontlines of the science wars on what happens in the brain when we learn a new language. She brings both of these experiences together seamlessly in Dreaming in Hindi, a remarkably unique and thoughtful account of self-discovery.
Cambridge Classical Studies: Oscan in Southern Italy and Sicily
by Katherine McdonaldIn pre-Roman Italy and Sicily, dozens of languages and writing systems competed and interacted, and bilingualism was the norm. Using frameworks from epigraphy, archaeology and the sociolinguistics of language contact, this book explores the relationship between Greek and Oscan, two of the most widely spoken languages in the south of the peninsula. Dr McDonald undertakes a new analysis of the entire corpus of South Oscan texts written in Lucania, Bruttium and Messana, including dedications, curse tablets, laws, funerary texts and graffiti. She demonstrates that genre and domain are critical to understanding where and when Greek was used within Oscan-speaking communities, and how ancient bilinguals exploited the social meaning of their languages in their writing. This book also offers a cutting-edge example of how to build the fullest possible picture of bilingualism in fragmentary languages across the ancient world.

Narrative Responses to the Trauma of the French Revolution
by Katherine AstburyDuring the French Revolution, traditional literary forms such as the sentimental novel and the moral tale dominate literary production. At first glance, it might seem that these texts are unaffected by the upheavals in France; in fact they reveal not only a surprising engagement with politics but also an internalised emotional response to the turbulence of the period. In this innovative and wide-ranging study, Katherine Astbury uses trauma theory as a way of exploring the apparent contradiction between the proliferation of non-political literary texts and the events of the Revolution. Through the narratives of established bestselling literary figures of the Ancien Regime (primarily Marmontel, Madame de Genlis and Florian), and the early works of first generation Romantics Madame de Stael and Chateaubriand, she traces how the Revolution shapes their writing, providing an intriguing new angle on cultural production of the 1790s.Katherine Astbury is Senior Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Warwick.
Negotiating Language Policies in Schools: Educators as Policymakers
by Kate MenkenEducators are at the epicenter of language policy in education. This book explores how they interpret, negotiate, resist, and (re)create language policies in classrooms. Bridging the divide between policy and practice by analyzing their interconnectedness, it examines the negotiation of language education policies in schools around the world, focusing on educators’ central role in this complex and dynamic process. Each chapter shares findings from research conducted in specific school districts, schools, or classrooms around the world and then details how educators negotiate policy in these local contexts. Discussion questions are included in each chapter. A highlighted section provides practical suggestions and guiding principles for teachers who are negotiating language policies in their own schools.
Exile and Nomadism in French and Hispanic Women's Writing
by Kate AverisWomen in exile disrupt assumptions about exile, belonging, home and identity. For many women exiles, home represents less a place of belonging and more a point of departure, and exile becomes a creative site of becoming, rather than an unsettling state of errancy. Exile may be a propitious circumstance for women to renegotiate identities far from the strictures of home, appropriating a new freedom in mobility. Through a feminist politics of place, displacement and subjectivity, this comparative study analyses the novels of key contemporary Francophone and Latin American writers Nancy Huston, Linda Le, Malika Mokeddem, Cristina Peri Rossi, Laura Restrepo, and Cristina Siscar to identify a new nomadic subjectivity in the lives and works of transnational women today.

National Minorities in Serbian Academia: The Role of Gender and Language Barriers
by Karolina Lendák-KabókThis book offers an intersectional analysis of secondary and tertiary educational pathways of ethnic Hungarians, Romanians and Slovaks in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia. After a detailed overview of the legal and institutional context of national minority education in Serbia, the book presents qualitative and quantitative research results to illuminate the often invisible linguistic and cultural barriers that national minority high school graduates, university students and faculty may encounter. The author also focuses on the position of national minority women in Serbian higher education and academia, shedding light on the very gendered nature of the ‘glass ceiling’ that often holds members of national minority communities back from career building. This book will be of interest to policymakers seeking nuanced interpretations of multifocal inequalities, as well as academics in fields such as gender studies, migration studies, minority languages and communities, and the sociology of education.
Conceptualizing Biblical Cities: A Stylistic Study
by Karolien VermeulenThis book offers a comprehensive treatment of the city image in the Hebrew Bible, with specific attention to stylistics. By engaging with spatial theory (Lefebvre 1974, Soja 1996), the author develops a new framework to analyse the concept of ‘city’, arguing that a set of conceptual images defines the Biblical Hebrew city, each of them constructed using the same linguistic toolkit. Contrary to previous studies, the book shows that biblical cities are not necessarily evil or female. In addition, there is no substantial difference between the metaphorical images used for Jerusalem and those used for other cities. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of stylistics, urban studies, critical-spatial theory and biblical studies (especially Biblical Hebrew).
Communication, Meaning and Misconceptions: How to Help, Heal and Hurt with Language
by Karol JanickiThis book covers several related topics anchored in the idea of how meaning is created. The central focus in the book is, however, on how language awareness may help us communicate smoothly and solve social problems. The book takes up language misconceptions and their social significance, and promotes the view that regarding meaning (and language in general) as open and flexible, rather than closed and rigid, may lead to critical thinking, innovation, and creativity. The book covers topics such as words and things, words and emotions, fake news and hate speech, and it has been written in the form of short informal dialogues to engage readers and make linguistic concepts accessible.

Easy Ways to Enlarge Your German Vocabulary
by Karl A. SchmidtAlthough there are many books that cover German grammar and syntax, remarkably little modern attention has been given to the practical problem of acquiring a German vocabulary. Yet building up or enlarging a basic vocabulary can be one of the most time-consuming and most difficult tasks for the student, if he approaches it by the conventional method of word lists or reading notes. As the present book, by Karl A. Schmidt, Assistant Professor of German at the University of San Francisco, shows, there are modern techniques for building vocabulary efficiently.Professor Schmidt's work builds upon the close relationship of German to English, as well as upon the easy and rational processes that are used in German for word formation. Cognates and words of common foreign origin between English and German are covered, as well as the creation of new words by compounding, by affixes, and other modifications. Concentrating on useful, modern vocabulary, this book is remarkably clear in its presentation and will (in addition to its specific considerations) leave the reader with a sense of the patterns of word formation, so that he can go farther on his own. This book can be used as a supplement to any language course, for self-study by a student who has already had grammatical basics, or as a refresher. The extensive practice examples that are included (with a key at the rear) will enable the reader both to increase his knowledge and to check his progress.
