Miracles and Other Realities: The Paranormal Adventures of Thomaz Green Morton, the Most Powerful Psychic in the World

by Lee Pulos Gary Richman

Once in a generation, a person of extraordinary psychic powers comes along. Miracles and Other Realities tells the true story of Thomaz Green Morton, a gifted psychic from the Minas Gerais region of Brazil.Originally published in 1990 and now rereleased for a modern audience, Miracles and Other Realities recounts the fascinating story of Thomaz Green Morton and his powerful psychic abilities. This book will turn the heads of scientists, whose traditional acceptance of reality has been limited to that which can be measured objectively, and will introduce to a wider audience the power of mind over matter. Thomaz&’s story begins when he is struck by lightning on his twelfth birthday. This electrical insult to his body detonated a dazzling range of paranormal abilities. (Severe electric shock is, incidentally, common to the childhood experience of every major psychic.) Thomaz has since been called the most powerful psychic in the world. Driven by his mind to the farther reaches of reality to produce psychic phenomena such as metal-bending, spiritual healing, and transmutations of matter, Thomaz&’s feats are well-documented by the authors. The story is all the more captivating because Thomaz is graced with a childlike emotional temperament, making him intent on living life to its fullest. Coauthors Lee Pulos and Gary Richman explore through Thomaz the ways in which magic, or miracles, challenges the conventional view of reality, thereby shaking up rational belief systems that inhibit the experience of new realms of possibility. Readers will find Thomaz&’s story compelling, not only as a real-life example of human potential but as a metaphor for unleashing other realities and levels of consciousness to tap into the potential within themselves.

Missing Each Other: How to Cultivate Meaningful Connections

by Edward Brodkin Ashley Pallathra

In our fast-paced, tech-obsessed lives, rarely do we pay genuine, close attention to one another. With all that's going on in the world, and the never-ending demands of our daily lives, most of us are too stressed and preoccupied with our own thoughts and worries to be able to really listen to each other for long. Often, we seem to somehow "miss" each other, misunderstand each other, or talk past each other. Our ability to tune in to ourselves and to others seems to be withering. Many of us are left wishing for someone who could really listen, understand, and genuinely connect with us.In Missing Each Other, researchers and clinicians Edward Brodkin and Ashley Pallathra argue that we must find the ability to be in tune with each other again, and they show us how. Based on years of research that they conducted together in a National Institutes of Mental Health-funded clinical study, the authors take a wide-ranging and surprising journey through fields as diverse as social neuroscience and autism research, music performance, pro basketball, and tai chi. They use these stories to introduce the four principal components of attunement: Relaxed Awareness, Listening, Understanding, and Mutual Responsiveness. They outline the science, research, and biology underlying these pillars of human connection, but also providing readers with exercises through which they can improve their own skills and abilities in each.

Missing Witches: Recovering True Histories of Feminist Magic

by Risa Dickens Amy Torok

A guide to invocations, rituals, and histories at the intersection of magic and feminism, as informed by history's witches--and the sociopolitical culture that gave rise to them. When you start looking for witches, you find them everywhere. As seekers and practitioners reclaim and restore magic to its rightful place among powerful forces for social, personal, and political transformation, more people than ever are claiming the identity of "Witch." But our knowledge of witchcraft and magic has been marred by erasure, sensationalism, and sterilization, the true stories of history's witches left untold.Through meditations, stories, and practices, authors Risa Dickens and Amy Torok offer an intersectional, contemporary lens for uncovering and reconnecting with feminist witch history. Sharing traditions from all over the world--from Harlem to Haiti, Oaxaca to Mesopotamia--Missing Witches introduces readers to figures like Monica Sjoo, HP Blavatsky, Maria Sabina, and Enheduanna, shedding light on their work and the cultural and sociopolitical contexts that shaped it. Structured around the 8 sabbats of the Wheel of the Year, each chapter includes illustrations by Amy Torok, as well as invocations, rituals, and offerings that incorporate the authors' own wisdom, histories, and journeys of trauma, loss, and empowerment. Missing Witches offers an inside look at the vital stories of women who have practiced--and lived--magic.

Misunderstanding Health: Making Sense of America's Broken Health Care System

by Rohit Khanna

This eminently relevant and thoroughly entertaining book reminds us that understanding more about health care helps us understand the larger world around us.With technological advances and information sharing so prevalent, health care should be more transparent and easier to access than ever before. Over the course of eighteen short, engaging chapters, Khanna explains• how unexamined beliefs can endanger patients, drive cost, and increase bureaucracy• the "Dr. Google" effect on the ways that we seek (or eschew) care • why our health care costs more than in any other country • the unintended consequences of using rating sites like Yelp • what we can learn about health care from hurricanes• how social media influencers impact health care• how artificial intelligence can improve health care• why health screening programs are so complicated• what the industry is doing to combat health care fraud• what the big deal about legalizing medical cannabis is• how to think about behavioral "nudges" designed to improve health • why understanding how data are collected is critical to understanding what they can tell us• and much moreEach provocative and easy-to-read chapter covers a familiar aspect of health care in a clear and succinct way. Offering inquisitive readers a warts-and-all view of American health care, Misunderstanding Health is the book that you'll want to read if you know enough to be frustrated by the system but want a deeper dive into its challenges and opportunities.

The Modal Future: A Theory of Future-Directed Thought and Talk

by Fabrizio Cariani

It is commonly assumed that we conceive of the past and the future as symmetrical. In this book, Fabrizio Cariani develops a new theory of future-directed discourse and thought that shows that our linguistic and philosophical conceptions of the past and future are, in fact, fundamentally different. Future thought and talk, Cariani suggests, are best understood in terms of a systematic analogy with counterfactual thought and talk, and are not just mirror images of the past. Cariani makes this case by developing detailed formal semantic theories as well as by advancing less technical views about the nature of future-directed judgment and prediction. His book addresses in a thought-provoking way several important debates in contemporary philosophy, and his synthesis of parallel threads of research will benefit scholars in the philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology, linguistics and cognitive science.

But a workplace accident left Lee doused in a toxic chemical and facing a deadly cancer that turned his life upside down. The Monsanto Papers is the inside story of Lee Johnson's landmark lawsuit against Monsanto. For Lee, the case was a race against the clock, with doctors predicting he wouldn't survive long enough to take the witness stand. For the eclectic band of young, ambitious lawyers representing him, it was a matter of professional pride and personal risk, with millions of dollars and hard-earned reputations on the line. For the public at large, the lawsuit presented a question of corporate accountability. With enough money and influence, could a company endanger its customers, hide evidence, manipulate regulators, and get away with it all—for decades? Readers will be astounded by the depth of corruption uncovered, captivated by the shocking twists, and moved by Lee's quiet determination to see justice served. With gripping narrative force that reads like fiction, The Monsanto Papers takes readers behind the scenes of a grueling legal battle, pulling back the curtain on the frailties of the American court system and the lengths to which lawyers will go to fight corporate wrongdoing.

The Mount Washington Transit Tunnel Disaster (Disaster)

On Christmas Eve 1917, an overcrowded, out-of-control streetcar exited the Mount Washington tunnel, crashing into pedestrians. Twenty-three were killed and more than eighty injured in the worst transit incident in Pittsburgh history. The crash scene on Carson Street was chaotic as physicians turned the railway offices into a makeshift hospital and bystanders frantically sought to remove the injured and strewn bodies from the wreckage. Most of the victims, many women and children, were from the close-knit neighborhoods of Knoxville, Beltzhoover and Mount Oliver. In the aftermath, public outrage over the tragedy led to criminal prosecution, civil suits and the bankruptcy of the Pittsburgh Railways Company, which operated the service. Author Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt explores the tragic history of the Mount Washington transit tunnel disaster.
