Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

by Shunryu Suzuki Trudy Dixon

Zen mind is one of those enigmatic phrases used by Zen teachers to throw you back upon yourself, to make you go behind the words themselves and begin wondering. "I know what my own mind is," you tell yourself, "but what is Zen mind?" And then: "But do I really know what my own mind is?" Is it what I am doing now? Is it what I am thinking now?" And if you should then try to sit physically still for a while to see if you can locate it--then you have begun the practice of Zen, then you have begun to realize the unrestricted mind. The innocence of this first inquiry--just asking what you are--is beginner's mind. The mind of the beginner is needed throughout Zen practice. It is the open mind, the attitude that includes both doubt and possibility, the ability to see things always as fresh and new. It is needed in all aspects of life. Beginner's mind is the practice of Zen mind. This book originated from a series of talks given by Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki to a small group in Los Altos, California. He joined their meditation periods once a week and afterwards answered their questions and tried to encourage them in their practice of Zen and help them solve the problems of life. His approach is informal, and he draws his examples from ordinary events and common sense. Zen is now and here, he is saying; it can be as meaningful for the West as for the East. But his fundamental teaching and practice are drawn from all the centuries of Zen Buddhism and especially from Dogen, one of the most important and creative of all Zen Masters.

The New Religious Intolerance: Overcoming the Politics of Fear in an Anxious Age

by Martha C. Nussbaum

What impulse prompted some newspapers to attribute the murder of 77 Norwegians to Islamic extremists, until it became evident that a right-wing Norwegian terrorist was the perpetrator? Why did Switzerland, a country of four minarets, vote to ban those structures? How did a proposed Muslim cultural center in lower Manhattan ignite a fevered political debate across the United States? In The New Religious Intolerance, Martha C. Nussbaum surveys such developments and identifies the fear behind these reactions. Drawing inspiration from philosophy, history, and literature, she suggests a route past this limiting response and toward a more equitable, imaginative, and free society. Fear, Nussbaum writes, is “more narcissistic than other emotions. ” Legitimate anxieties become distorted and displaced, driving laws and policies biased against those different from us. Overcoming intolerance requires consistent application of universal principles of respect for conscience. Just as important, it requires greater understanding. Nussbaum challenges us to embrace freedom of religious observance for all, extending to others what we demand for ourselves. She encourages us to expand our capacity for empathetic imagination by cultivating our curiosity, seeking friendship across religious lines, and establishing a consistent ethic of decency and civility. With this greater understanding and respect, Nussbaum argues, we can rise above the politics of fear and toward a more open and inclusive future.

The Need to Say No

by Jill Brooke

The Need to Say No is a simple inspirational guide and instructional manual to help the reader gain command of their relationships by setting boundaries. Whether in love, work, family, or the world, the need to say no is imperative at times. And rather than accepting another transgression or being bullied, learning to set healthy boundaries is essential for our health and well-being at home, in the workplace, or the communities in which we live. The Need to Say No includes helpful advice on how to say no without fear and without injury to either party. It is an essential book for anyone who has said yes too often or just accepted an unacceptable status quo.Emile M. Cioran wrote, "Tyranny destroys or strengthens the individual." Indeed if we allow ourselves to accept a fate without setting boundaries through our will and actions, we can be destroyed emotionally, psychologically, and even physically. Many people have to learn the skills to defend themselves from the inappropriate demands of others, and for that reason The Need to Say No is written. Whether dealing with an abusive love partner, an inappropriate boss, a child that demands everything, a societal condition that needs to stop, or any other kind of bullies, we have the power within ourselves to change the outcomes for the better: to be bullish without being bulldozed. And this better outcome can mean peace at home, success at work, and real change in the world. The Need to Say No uses the metaphor of a bull to examine the behaviors of bullies and boundary violators and also includes mythological, historical and contemporary bull stories and uses them to identify the 10 bull archetypes of aggressive personalities you often encounter and how to deal effectively with them. The Need to Say No provides inspiration and guidance in an entertaining and positive way to help us improve our lives through the decision to say no. Rich with quotes, illustrations, anecdotes, examples, tips, and more this book delivers a profound way to reach a positive conclusion: by saying "no."

Trauma and Forgiveness

by C. Fred Alford

Contrary to the view of trauma popularized by literary theorists, Trauma and Forgiveness argues that the traumatized are capable of representing their experience and that we should therefore listen more and theorize less. Using stories and case studies, including testimonies from Holocaust survivors, as well as the victims of 'ordinary' trauma, C. Fred Alford shows that, while the traumatized are generally capable of representing their experience, this does little to heal them. He draws on the British Object Relations tradition in psychoanalysis to argue that forgiveness, which might be expected to help heal the traumatized, is generally an attempt to avoid the hard work of mourning losses that can never be made whole. Forgiveness is better seen as a virtue in the classical sense, a recognition of human vulnerability. The book concludes with an extended case study of the essayist Jean Amery and his refusal to forgive.

The Secret Language of Money: How to Make Smarter Financial Decisions and Live a Richer Life

by David Krueger John David Mann

If money were about math, none of us would be carrying any debt. The numbers are simple. What's complicated is what we do with money. We use money to soothe our feelings and buy respect,to show how much we care or how little. We don't simply earn, save, and spend money: we flirt with it, crave it, and scorn it; we punish and reward ourselves with it. Without realizing it, we give money meaning it doesn't really have--what former psychiatrist and current business coach David Krueger calls our "money story. " And in the process of playing out that money story, we often sacrifice the most important things in our life: our health, freedom, relationships, and happiness. What is your money story? Do you consistently spend more than you have? Do you follow the herd in your investments--even though you know the herd is usually wrong? Have you neglected to save for the future, even when you have the means? Do you feel controlled or shackled by debt? Is your money somehow never "enough"? Is money, or the lack of it, always on your mind? The Secret Language of Money is a guided tour to the subconscious meanings we give money, the conflicted ways our brain deals with money, the reasons we tend to make the same money mistakes over and over--and most importantly, how you can change all that. A brilliant blend of cutting-edge science and real-world application, The Secret Language of Money helps you rewrite your money story and find that elusive balance of wealth, health, and joy we all seek.
