Pause Button Therapy

by Martin Shirran Marian Shirran

How many working days are lost every year to depression, anxiety or obesity-related health issues? How many more to the results of road rage, extreme anger, addictions...? On another theme, how many teaching hours are wasted dealing with bad behaviour in the classroom and playground bullying? An exciting new add-on to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy could mean massive time and cost savings for many behavioural problems, just by pressing a remote control button! No, it's not science fiction. Pause Button Therapy is possibly the first 'tactile' intervention to be introduced into talking therapies. It's a user-friendly technique, already proven in British schools and with adult problems such as addiction, anger management and weight loss within Gastric Mind Band therapy. This book has been written by British therapists Martin and Marion Shirran to explain their innovative Pause Button Therapy method, and includes a foreword from renowned psychology expert Professor Philip Zimbardo. Millions of us make rushed or ill-thought-out decisions every day, only to have pangs of regret just moments later. Using the concept of pressing the Pause, Fast Forward and Rewind buttons of a 'virtual' remote control device, you can learn not only to stop and think, but also visualise, understand and even feel the results of your snap decisions. With more thinking time, you can see the positive and negative consequences of your actions, allowing you to make more informed choices on a daily basis.

Paul's Prayers: A Mother's Account of Raising an Autistic Son

by Susan Anderson

Recipient of the Catholic Writers Guild 2018 Seal of Approval“A journey of compassion, frustration, and triumph . . . Anderson’s love for her son marks this beautiful portrait of family and faith.” —Publishers WeeklyPaul's Prayers is the story of a moderately autistic young man navigating life with a spiritual intelligence that runs further than most people can walk. Written by Paul's mother, this insightful memoir gives readers a unique look at the challenges and joys of raising her autistic son in a large Catholic family. The first of six children, Paul's early years were an exciting and confusing time for his parents. At the time, very little information on autism and its early signs was available, and the fact that the disorder is a spectrum ranging from mild to severe was not widely known. Unpredictable outbursts and sensitivities to light and schedule disruptions lead Paul's parents to refer to his condition as "The Marauder." The Marauder sweeps over the hospital nursery as the fluorescent lights blind Paul's eyes. The Marauder throws his black cape over the Christmas holidays, stealing four-year-old Paul's speech for three long days. In school, The Marauder keeps other students at bay, leaving Paul isolated and alone. Finally a developmental assessment gives some clarity to the exhausted family: Paul is on the autism spectrum, and they will all have to adjust their perspectives. Small victories emerge as Paul begins to reach developmental milestones in creative ways. Six years of piano lessons lead to a dramatic improvement in reading skills. A jaunt through the mountains with his father introduces Paul to his talent for running; with his brothers, he joins the high school cross country running team, which goes on to win the state championship. After high school, Paul works for the family business and attends college. Throughout this intimate memoir, every day is a challenge to be met with creative thinking, patience, and faith. Paul finds comfort in contemplative prayer and the support of his family when the world around him becomes too chaotic. As her son grows up, Susan Anderson learns how to cope with autism and embrace the importance of faith in the things unseen. Her family's experience is a beacon of light for those who find themselves on a similar path.

Patti d'amore

by Juan Pedropablo Anna Del Riso

by Elisa Queijeiro

by Boris Cyrulnik

Patience

by Eknath Easwaran

"Patience is the ornament of the brave," Eknath Easwaran's wise grandmother used to say. In all relationships, Easwaran says, patience is the mark of love. An experienced spiritual teacher, he gives powerful insights and advice for developing patience at home and at work, with his unique blend of humor and practicality. Stories offer quiet interludes throughout this little book. Anecdotes about animals, sports stars, and happy family outings make these short, varied readings as entertaining as they are instructive. Gentle reminiscences of India, tales from Easwaran's Hindu heritage, and inspiration from the world's saints lift the reader's spirits and give courage. Just keep trying, Easwaran says, and you'll find there's no end to your patience - no end to the wisdom, love, and compassion in your heart. This book makes a thoughtful gift for anyone seeking a life that is kinder, more stable, and serene.

Patience

by Allan Lokos

"As founder and guiding teacher of the Community Meditation Center in New York, Allan Lokos has an arsenal of tools for coping with stressful situations. " - Rachel Lee Harris, New York Times To survive the roller-coaster ride of life, with its ever-changing shifts from pleasure to pain, gain to loss, and praise to blame, requires a substantial depth of patience. In this life-changing book, Allan Lokos sheds new light on this much-sought-after state of mind, and provides a road map for cultivating greater patience in one's life. According to Lokos, to develop a depth of patience we must first acknowledge the unhappiness caused by our impatience and anger in its many manifestations-from mild annoyance to rage. In this revelatory book, Lokos draws on his many years as a Buddhist practitioner and spiritual teacher, as well as interviews with a wide range of individuals who have had their patience tested-often dramatically so-and lays out a compelling path to the heart of patience.
