Polarlichter zwischen Wunder und Wirklichkeit

by Kristian Schlegel

by Tim Saunders

The attack by Rudders Rangers on Pointe du Hoc, as one of the opening acts of D Day, is without doubt an epic of military history. As a result of Montgomerys upscaling of the invasion General Bradleys First US Army had to deal with a dangerous coastal gun battery that would dominate the approaches to both Omaha and Utah Beaches. When the plan to climb the defended cliff and put the guns out of action was first discussed, an astounded staff officer said Two old ladies with brooms cold sweep them off those cliffs!Lieutenant Colonel James Rudder, commander of the Provisional Ranger Group consisting of 2nd and 5th US Rangers, set about training his men and developing techniques to get up the hundred-foot-high cliff. Rocket fired grapples, ladders of various types and even free climbing of a similar lose cliff on Englands south coast were practiced. On D-Day everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Lesser men would have given up, with the force having navigated towards the wrong headland, been continuously under fire as they motored back towards Pointe du Hoc, shipping water in the rough seas, craft sinking and few of the saturated grapples reaching the cliff top. None the less determined Rangers with German infantry hurling grenades down on them struggled up the cliff but the guns were not there. With the Rangers fanning out across the wrecked battery and into the fields beyond the guns were found in an orchard and destroyed with thermite grenades. Mission accomplished but at 1300 hours there was no sign of the relieving force from Omaha. Colonel Rudder with his radios barely working appealed for help but with a near disaster at Omaha, neither help or relief was forthcoming. Consequently, the 200 Rangers fought on against mounting pressure in an equally epic battle until finally relieved two days later.ades. Poiesis: The Language of Psychology and the Speech of the Soul

by Stephen Levine

Stephen K. Levine argues that poiesis, the creative act, is also the act by which we affirm our identity and humanity; in exploring this subject he shows the essential affinity of the creative and the therapeutic processes and explores the nature of creative acts. This book looks in detail at the connections between expressive arts, such as poetry, and psychology and develops understanding of the theoretical foundations which connect the arts and psychotherapy. It considers the context in which modern therapy emerged and looks at various aspects of different arts therapies. It provides a much-needed step in the theoretical underpinning of the expressive therapies.

Hirsch has delved deeply into the poetic traditions of the world, returning with an inclusive, international compendium. Hirsch’s entries will deepen readers’ relationships with their favorite poems and open greater levels of understanding in each new poem they encounter. Podcasting as an Intimate Medium (Routledge Studies in New Media and Cyberculture)

by Alyn Euritt

This book delves into the notion of intimacy as a defining feature of podcasting, examining the concept of intimacy itself and how the public sphere explores the relationships created and maintained through podcasts. The book situates textual analysis of specific American podcasts within podcast criticism, monetization, and production advice. Through analysis of these sources' self-descriptions, the text builds a podcasting-specific framework for intimacy and uses that framework to interpret how podcasting imagines the connections it forms within communities. Instead of intimacy being inherent, the book argues that podcasting constructs intimacy and uses it to define the quality of its own mediation. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of New and Digital Media, Media Studies, Communication Studies, Journalism, Literature, Cultural Studies, and American Studies.

A Pocketful of History: Four Hundred Years of America One State Quarter at a Time

by Jim Noles

A HISTORY-RICH LOOK at the coins in your pocket-the fifty state quarters-and what they tell us about "changing" America Our past is all around us-even in the spare change jangling in your purse or pocket. For the past decade, the United States Mint has offered America a pocketful of history through its popular 50 State Quarters® Program. When the final quarters are released, thousands of us will have collected these commemorative coins, one for each state and territory in the Union. But what can we learn about our country's stories and lore from a mere $12.50 in state quarters? Jim Noles's fascinating book, A Pocketful of History, looks at each quarter in turn to answer these curious questions . . . * Who is Caesar Rodney and why is he riding a horse on Delaware's quarter? * What is the real history behind Abraham Lincoln's political career in his home state Illinois? * What happened to New Hampshire's symbol, the "Old Man in the Mountain," three years after its quarter was minted? * What famous racecourse is memorialized on the quarter from the state known as the "Crossroads of America"? Congress recently extended the program to include six additional quarters for Washington, D.C., and the affiliated territories of the United States, to be released in 2009. Why is Pennsylvania known a the Keystone State? Why did California choose to honor preservationist John Muir rather than a mining '49er? . . . and many, many more. A Pocketful of History tells the story behind each state's quarter-how each state chose its design; what is important about the people, scenes, and themes depicted on the coins; and what the collection tells us about ourselves. It's an entertaining and enlightening journey through four hundred years of America in twenty-five-cent doses.
