Establishing Religious Freedom: Jefferson's Statute in Virginia

by Thomas E. Buckley

The significance of the Virginia Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom goes far beyond the borders of the Old Dominion. Its influence ultimately extended to the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the separation of church and state. In his latest book, Thomas Buckley tells the story of the statute, beginning with its background in the struggles of the colonial dissenters against an oppressive Church of England. When the Revolution forced the issue of religious liberty, Thomas Jefferson drafted his statute and James Madison guided its passage through the state legislature. Displacing an established church by instituting religious freedom, the Virginia statute provided the most substantial guarantees of religious liberty of any state in the new nation. The statute's implementation, however, proved to be problematic. Faced with a mandate for strict separation of church and state--and in an atmosphere of sweeping evangelical Christianity--Virginians clashed over numerous issues, including the legal ownership of church property, the incorporation of churches and religious groups, Sabbath observance, protection for religious groups, Bible reading in school, and divorce laws. Such debates pitted churches against one another and engaged Virginia’s legal system for a century and a half.Fascinating history in itself, the effort to implement Jefferson’s statute has even broader significance in its anticipation of the conflict that would occupy the whole country after the Supreme Court nationalized the religion clause of the First Amendment in the 1940s.

Solved Problems in Geophysics

by Elisa Buforn Carmen Pro Agustín Udías

Solving problems is an indispensable exercise for mastering the theory underlying the various branches of geophysics. This book is a collection of nearly 200 problems in geophysics, which are solved in detail showing each step of their solution, the equations used and the assumptions made. Simple figures are also included to help students understand how to reduce a problem to its key elements. The book introduces the equations most commonly used in solving geophysical problems, and presents a series of exercises for the main, classical areas of geophysics - gravity, geomagnetism, seismology, and heat flow and geochronology. Problems range from simple exercises for the most elementary courses to more complex problems suitable for graduate-level students. This handy book is the ideal adjunct to core course textbooks on geophysical theory. It is a convenient source of additional homework and exam questions for instructors, and provides students with a practice or revision aid.

The Future Is in Your Hands: Portrait Photography from Senegal (Material Vernaculars)

by Beth Buggenhagen

In Senegal, portraiture serves as a vital index and creator of social connection. People sit for and display portraits, keep albums, and view illustrated magazines together. Through these portraiture practices, Senegalese have fashioned idealized images to mend fraught and fragmented lives in the context of decades of migration. The Future Is in Your Hands provides an expansive frame for photography to highlight the role of affect in portraiture practices. Moving from the colonial to the newly independent Senegal, Beth Buggenhagen combines museum, ethnographic, and archival research on photography's past with lens-based artists who address themes of separation, visibility, rupture, and repatriation through portraiture. Buggenhagen, in collaboration with Senegalese photographers, explores how photographs, as visual and material objects, migrate themselves and, like the bodies they represent, create a record not only of lived experiences but also of the cycle of migration for this labor-exporting country.By complicating the history of portraiture in Senegal, The Future Is in Your Hands reveals the enduring power of images and the efforts under way to keep this art form safely in Senegalese hands.
