A Student's Guide to Vectors and Tensors

by Daniel A. Fleisch

Vectors and tensors are among the most powerful problem-solving tools available, with applications ranging from mechanics and electromagnetics to general relativity. Understanding the nature and application of vectors and tensors is critically important to students of physics and engineering. Adopting the same approach used in his highly popular A Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations, Fleisch explains vectors and tensors in plain language. Written for undergraduate and beginning graduate students, the book provides a thorough grounding in vectors and vector calculus before transitioning through contra and covariant components to tensors and their applications. Matrices and their algebra are reviewed on the book's supporting website, which also features interactive solutions to every problem in the text where students can work through a series of hints or choose to see the entire solution at once. Audio podcasts give students the opportunity to hear important concepts in the book explained by the author.

Understanding Research Methods in Psychology

by Jennie Brooks Jamison

This book has three purposes. One purpose is to help students see that there are many options available to researchers for investigating behavior and that each method has a specific goal. The second purpose is to introduce students to qualitative research methods: interviewing, observation, and case studies. International Baccalaureate (IB) students taking the Higher Level (HL) course sit for Paper 3, a section of the exam about qualitative research. I weave headings throughout the chapters on qualitative research that correspond to Paper 3 learning outcomes. These IB learning outcomes are relevant for any psychology student. The third purpose is to teach students how to design a simple experiment and analyze the data. Students taking the International Baccalaureate and/or Advanced Placement exams in psychology will find what they need in this book. Research methods are probably the most difficult part of these exams. Introductory texts do not usually provide enough depth, while the typical college-level research methods books are too complicated, sometimes even for a college student's first experience with methodology.

Civil Procedure: A Coursebook

by Joseph W. Glannon Andrew M. Perlman Peter Raven-Hansen

Casebooks generally present a series of cases followed by notes and questions, but the authors of this text saw the need for something different. They wrote this coursebook with features that are student-friendly. Each chapter begins with a summary, and each case begins with an introduction that includes questions to think about before reading the case. Notes and questions follow, but this work differs from others in that almost all the questions are answered. Ease of use and clarity shaped the design and organization of the book (e. g. short chapters, the use of fonts and borders to designate types of text, summaries of key concepts). Material is presented in chapters on subject matter jurisdiction, personal jurisdiction, venue, pleading, joinder and supplemental jurisdiction, discovery, choice of law, trial and pretrial, and after final judgment. Joseph W. Glannon and Andrew M. Perlman are affiliated with Suffolk U. , and Peter Raven-Hansen, with George Washington U. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc. , Portland, OR (booknews. com)

Understanding Civil Procedure (4th Edition)

by Gene R. Shreve Peter Raven-Hansen

This well-established treatise is premised on the assumption that the key to understanding the principles of civil procedure is to know why: why the principles were created and why they are invoked. The treatise is written to answer these questions as it lays out the basic principles of civil procedure. It also reflects the authors? belief that students of civil procedure can understand and appreciate complex principles when they are clearly presented; teaching civil procedure does not require dumbing it down. The authors use the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure as a model, but they also refer to different state rules and doctrines where appropriate in order to present a representative cross-section of state models. Although they discuss important civil procedure cases in the text, thus supporting the most widely used civil procedure casebooks using these same cases, they also provide useful references to secondary sources and illustrative cases for the reader who wants to explore further.
