Courtyard Cat
by C. S. AdlerEleven-year-old Lindsay blames herself for the accident to her brother which forced her family to move to a city where she feels uncomfortable and friendless. She misses her friends back in the country, and the new city apartment is shabby. But the worst part of her family's move is that she's in charge of her little brother Garth. He won't listen to her anymore, and Lindsay can't complain to her parents because everything--Dad changing jobs to make more money, Mom going back to work--seems to be her fault. None of it would have happened, if only Lindsay had done what she was supposed to that awful day when Garth got hurt. Lindsay's only consolation is the beautiful Siamese cat who lives in the courtyard of their apartment house, protected by Lindsay's neighbors. There's know-it-all Anna and easygoing Amesley, twins two years older than she; scruffy-looking Hogan; and kindly, elderly Mr. Prior. Joining in their attempt to save the cat from the quick-tempered landlady, Lindsay discovers that true friends don't have to be your age or look like you. She is also forced to deal with her guilt about Garth's injury. With sensitivity, warmth, and gentle humor, C. S. Adler weaves a lively story of friendships lost and found. There are more books by C. S. Adler that you'll like in Bookshare's library. If only Fud could find a way to be as free as the coyotes roaming the Wyoming countryside: strong, smart, independent, and always willing to protect their own. When Larry comes home with a rusted-out houseboat, Fud is horrified to hear that he wants to fix it up for them to live on permanently. All she sees is a floating prison. Then new-neighbor Leigh tells Fud about Miss Black Gold, a beauty pageant sponsored by the local coal mine. While Fud doesn’t care much about gowns or talents or prancing around on stage, she cares very much about getting herself and her mom away from Larry before the boat is finished. And to do that, she needs money, in particular that Miss Black Gold prize money. One problem: the more Fud fantasizes about escape, the more her connection to the coyotes lurking outside her window grows. Coyote Tales
by Thomas KingTwo tales, set in a time “when animals and human beings still talked to each other,” display Thomas King’s cheeky humor and master storytelling skills. Freshly illustrated and reissued as an early chapter book, these stories are perfect for newly independent readers. In Coyote Sings to the Moon, Old Woman and the animals sing to the moon each night. Coyote attempts to join them, but his voice is so terrible they beg him to stop. He is crushed and lashes out — who needs Moon anyway? Furious, Moon dives into a pond, plunging the world into darkness. But clever Old Woman comes up with a plan to send Moon back up into the sky and, thanks to Coyote, there she stays. In Coyote’s New Suit, mischievous Raven wreaks havoc when she suggests that Coyote’s toasty brown suit is not the finest in the forest, thus prompting him to steal suits belonging to all the other animals. Meanwhile, Raven tells the other animals to borrow clothes from the humans’ camp. When Coyote finds that his closet is too full, Raven slyly suggests he hold a yard sale, then sends the human beings (in their underwear) and the animals (in their ill-fitting human clothes) along for the fun. A hilarious illustration of the consequences of wanting more than we need.
