At its core, the book offers remarkable insight into how to use the five senses--touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell, plus awareness itself--as a path to a healthier, saner, and more meaningful life. This is the definitive book for our time on the connection between mindfulness, health, and our physical and spiritual well-being.

Common Sense and Other Works by Thomas Paine (First Avenue Classics ™)

by Thomas Paine

Known as the Father of the American Revolution, English-American author Thomas Paine became famous for two pamphlets that inspired the colonists to fight for their independence. Common Sense, published in 1776, fostered the idea that the colonists could separate from the tyrannical rule of the British monarchy, and The American Crisis, published that same year, encouraged soldiers to fight against the British Army. Paine's later writings included The Rights of Man (1791), a series of articles defending the French Revolution and asserting that people should rise up if governments failed to protect their natural rights. His final text, The Age of Reason (1794–1796), challenged institutionalized religion and critiqued Christian theology, advocating instead for reason and scientific inquiry. This collection features unabridged editions of all four of the American revolutionary's main pamphlets and writings.

Common Sense: Large Print (Dover Thrift Editions: Political Science)

by Thomas Paine

Among the most influential authors and reformers of his age, Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was born in England but went on to play an important role in both the American and French Revolutions. In 1774, he emigrated to America where, for a time, he helped to edit the Pennsylvania Magazine. On January 10, 1776, he published his pamphlet Common Sense, a persuasive argument for the colonies' political and economic separation from Britain.Common Sense cites the evils of monarchy, accuses the British government of inflicting economic and social injustices upon the colonies, and points to the absurdity of an island attempting to rule a continent. Credited by George Washington as having changed the minds of many of his countrymen, the document sold over 500,000 copies within a few months.Today, Common Sense remains a landmark document in the struggle for freedom, distinguished not only by Paine's ideas but also by its clear and passionate presentation. Designed to ignite public opinion against autocratic rule, the pamphlet offered a careful balance between imagination and judgment, and appropriate language and expression to fit the subject. It immediately found a receptive audience, heartened Washington's despondent army, and foreshadowed much of the phrasing and substance of the Declaration of Independence.

Complete Poems

by Christopher Marlowe

Best known for his tragic plays and his refined and polished blank verse, Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) was born in the same year as fellow writer William Shakespeare. Marlowe's career was cut short by a tavern brawl, in which he died under circumstances as mysterious and violent as any of his dramas. This complete collection of Marlowe's poetry includes his translations of Ovid's "Elegies" and the First Book from Lucan's "Civil Hero." The celebrated "Hero and Leander," left unfinished at Marlowe's death, is also featured (the poem was later completed by George Chapman; only Marlowe's work appears here), as is the poet's most famous creation, "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love."

Complete Sonnets: The Complete Illustrated Edition (Oxford Shakespeare Ser.)

by William Shakespeare

Without a doubt the most important of Shakespeare's nondramatic works, the sonnets have engendered reams of scholarly disputation as to the identity of "the dark lady" and the "lovely boy" to whom the vast majority are addressed. Controversy has also long simmered over the full name of the "W.H." of the dedication. What is not in dispute is the superior quality of these lyrics, which rank among the finest sonnets ever written -- in any language.Overt 150 poems deal with love, friendship, the tyranny of time, beauty's evanescence in power, death, and other themes in language unsurpassed in power, precision, and beauty. Now this inexpensive Dover edition enables any lover of poetry or fine literature to have this exquisite verse in his or her personal library. A brief glossary illuminates a number of archaic terms.Includes a selection from the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
