Heat Lightning: Virgil Flowers 2 (Virgil Flowers Ser. #No. 2)

by John Sandford

The second Virgil Flowers novel by internationally bestselling author John Sandford.'When the going gets tough, try to unload it on that f****** Flowers' On a hot, humid summer night in Minnesota, Virgil Flowers gets a call from Lucas Davenport. A body has been found near a veterans’ memorial in Stillwater, Minnesota, with two shots to the head and a lemon in his mouth. That's strange. What's stranger still, however, is this: two weeks ago, a body was discovered... with two shots to the head and a lemon in the victim's mouth. Davenport needs a man he can trust on this case, and there's no one he trusts more than Virgil Flowers. Flowers becomes convinced that someone is keeping a list—with many more names on it. And when he discovers what connects them all, he’s almost sorry. Because if it’s true, then this whole thing leads down a lot more trails than he thought it did—and every one of them is booby-trapped. But even Flowers has no idea how strange things are going to get. * * * Praise for John Sandford and the Virgil Flower novels * * * ‘Along the way to the satisfying ending, Virgil displays the rough humor and rough justice that make him such an appealing character’ Publishers Weekly on Deep Freeze ‘A knowing portrait of small-town life layered into a very well plotted mystery. Heavy Metal and You

by Christopher Krovatin

Sam wears spiked bracelets, gets wasted with his friends, and has almost encyclopedic knowledge about heavy-metal music. But he's also incredibly intelligent and as knowledgeable about classic literature as he is about the music he loves. Sam attends an expensive all-boys prep school in New York City, and he and his buddies often cut classes to smoke or get an early start on the weekend. But all good things must end, and they do with a sudden crash when Sam begins to date Melissa, a straightedge who doesn't drink or do drugs and doesn't like the fact that he does. Sam tries to modify his behavior for the girl who is more important to him than he ever thought possible, but pleasing Melissa means completely changing who he is. This romance is chock-full of music references, slang, and general metalhead band knowledge such as album release dates, etc. The language is raw and full of sexual talk and innuendo, especially among Sam and his friends. The main characters are well developed and mostly believable, if a bit more emotional than expected on Sam's part. The plot moves quickly and jumps from past to present, with Sam interspersing his current situation with relevant scenes from his past. This rapid progression, as well as the realistic situations and language, keep teens' attention, making the book a good choice for reluctant readers.

Hedda Gabler: Large Print (First Avenue Classics ™)

by Henrik Ibsen

Hedda Gabler is bored with everything, even her new marriage. Resigning herself to a life of domesticity, she becomes nervous when her husband, George Tesman, tells her they are tight on money. George hasn't become the success Hedda thought he would. When George's academic rival, Eilert Lövborg, enters the picture, Hedda begins manipulating the lives of others, leading to multiple tragedies. First published in 1890 in Norway and performed in 1891 in Germany, this play by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen explores the consequences that can arise from a desire for freedom and power. This is an unabridged version of the translation by Edmund Gosse and William Archer.

Hedda Gabler

by Henrick Isben

Hedda's married name is Hedda Tesman; Gabler is her maiden name. On the subject of the title, Ibsen wrote: "My intention in giving it this name was to indicate that Hedda as a personality is to be regarded rather as her father's daughter than her husband's wife." Hedda Gabler, daughter of an aristocratic general, has just returned to her villa in Kristiania (now Oslo) from her honeymoon. Her husband is Jørgen Tesman, an aspiring, young, reliable (but not brilliant) academic who has combined research with their honeymoon. It becomes clear in the course of the play that she has never loved him but has married him for reasons pertaining to the boring nature of her life.

The Hardys are standing on top of a mountain of trouble- and it's about to explode under their feet! ================ From inside the book: SNOW JOB Joe looked beyond the helicopter pilot at the snow blowing off the peak. "Fly into that plume of snow and go down low," he ordered the pilot. "We're going to jump out." "Are you nuts?" Frank yelled. Just then the man in the other copter brought his Uzi up and snapped off a couple of shots into the air. "If we jump out with our snowboards on," Joe said, "we can be moving as soon as we hit the ground." "That just might work!" Frank exclaimed. "And if we hug the tree line on our way down the mountain, he won't have a clear shot at us." As the helicopter took a steep dive, Joe put his boots into his snowboard bindings, then opened the copter door. He felt a blast of icy wind tearing at him as he hung his legs out. He paused only long enough to fit his goggles over his eyes. "Geronimo!" Joe shouted. Then he leaped into the whiteness.
