Aaron McDuffie Moore: An African American Physician, Educator, and Founder of Durham's Black Wall Street
by Blake Hill-SayaAaron McDuffie Moore (1863–1923) was born in rural Columbus County in eastern North Carolina at the close of the Civil War. Defying the odds stacked against an African American of this era, he pursued an education, alternating between work on the family farm and attending school. Moore originally dreamed of becoming an educator and attended notable teacher training schools in the state. But later, while at Shaw University, he followed another passion and entered Leonard Medical School. Dr. Moore graduated with honors in 1888 and became the first practicing African American physician in the city of Durham, North Carolina. He went on to establish the Durham Drug Company and the Durham Colored Library; spearhead and run Lincoln Hospital, the city's first secular, freestanding African American hospital; cofound North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company; help launch Rosenwald schools for African American children statewide; and foster the development of Durham's Hayti community. Dr. Moore was one-third of the mighty "Triumvirate" alongside John Merrick and C. C. Spaulding, credited with establishing Durham as the capital of the African American middle class in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and founding Durham's famed Black Wall Street. His legacy can still be seen on the city streets and country backroads today, and an examination of his life provides key insights into the history of Durham, the state, and the nation during Reconstruction and the beginning of the Jim Crow Era.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Analysis Based on Reduced-Dimensionality Reaction Route Map (Springer Theses)
by Takuro TsutsumiThis thesis proposes useful tools, on-the-fly trajectory mapping method and Reaction Space Projector (ReSPer), to analyze chemical reaction mechanisms by combining the reaction route map and the ab initio molecular dynamics. The key concept for the proposed tools is the Cartesian distance between pairwise molecular structures, and a practical procedure to get the optimal distance is introduced. The on-the-fly trajectory mapping method tracks the distance function between reference structures and molecular structures along the trajectory. Although this method provides fruitful insight into dynamic reaction behaviors, the visualization of reaction routes into a low-dimensional space is still challenging because of the multi-dimensionality. ReSPer successfully constructs a low-dimensional reaction space defined by mathematically-selected principal coordinates representing mutual distance relationships in the full-dimensional space. ReSPer also enables us to project trajectories into the reaction space in the reduced dimension. In this thesis, these methods are applied to several reactions, including bifurcating and photochemical reactions, revealing dynamically-allowed reaction mechanisms. This thesis provides robust and versatile tools to elucidate dynamical reaction routes on the basis of the reduced-dimensionality reaction route map and will help control chemical reaction dynamics and select descriptors for machine learning.

Ab Initio Nuclear Structure and Electroweak Properties from Chiral Effective Field Theory (Springer Theses)

FasanoThis thesis presents a consistent application of chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions and currents to obtain ab initio results for light nuclei magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller strengths in light nuclei (A≤17). Recent results have demonstrated the importance of chiral EFT corrections for correctly predicting magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller strengths in nuclei. However, these studies have not consistently applied the same treatment to these operators as is applied to the interaction. In this work, it is found that the inclusion of chiral EFT corrections to the magnetic dipole and Gamow-Teller operators generally brings the calculated results closer to agreement with experiment. However, this work also demonstrates that the convergence of the solution to the many-body problem still poses substantial difficulties. This work has confirmed that the inclusion of chiral EFT corrections is necessary to describe light nuclei, while concluding that higher-order corrections are necessary in order to obtain good agreement with experimental data.
