Adult Bible Studies, Fall 2022Theme: FreedomThis fall, our Bible lessons follow the theme “Freedom.” The lessons explore the concept of salvation and God’s gracious acts in redeeming us. They challenge we who have experienced God’s gracious salvation to work for freedom and justice on behalf of others. They acknowledge that as we do, we will encounter those whose beliefs and values are different from our own, so they encourage us in ways to remain faithful to our beliefs while we act as neighbors to others. Unit 1RescueThe concept of salvation is broad and inclusive of many divine actions by which we are rescued from the human predicament. This lessons in this unit focus on the freedom to which we are liberated. In the Roman world, the freer you were, the more power you exercised over others. Today, we think of freedom as the ability to do whatever we want without restrictions. In the Bible, freedom is about being able to choose without restriction to whom or what we devote ourselves. Paul described that choice as servitude to sin or becoming a slave to Christ. Scriptures: Exodus 1:1-2:10; Exodus 15:1-18; Exodus 17:1-16; Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Spiritual Practice: Living With IntentionalityUnit 2JusticeIn the commandments that God gave in the covenant at Sinai, God repeatedly called the Israelites to extend justice and share their blessings with widows, orphans, and strangers in their midst. This triad represented the most vulnerable people within ancient society. Widows, orphans, and strangers appear frequently throughout the Old and New Testament narratives in ways that illustrate this divine mandate. The measure of justice or righteousness found throughout Scripture is whether one cares for the “widow, the orphan, and the stranger.” The lessons in this unit invite us to ask ourselves, who are the most vulnerable in our society? Who in our community are excluded from the common good? Who has trouble providing for themselves or gaining access to the courts and public services? Scriptures: James 2:14-17, Exodus 22:21-27; 1 Kings 17:8-24, Luke 21:1-4; John 9:1-7, 35-38; Luke 18:1-8; Ezekiel 47:21-23Spiritual Practice: Awareness Unit 3Faithful ConversationsWe increasingly find ourselves living in communities and working with people from diverse backgrounds. While we may not agree with the beliefs of others, we seek peaceable and neighborly relationships. Outside In (September 2021)Sociologistsstudying the story of the early church often attribute the growth ofthe church to the sense of belonging that it offered people in a worldwhere belonging was limited to those with things such as property, highstatus, and/or birthright. This unit looks at the various ways that theBible makes clear how we belong to God’s people even when we appear tobe outsiders. Several of the sessions point out where we as human beingsinsert distinctions that restrict membership within the community ofChrist.Unit 2. Into the Future (October 2021)After over 2000 years of existence as an institution, we can easily take for granted that we know what the church is. This unit invites readers to look at it from the view of the community living into the future. The Greek word for church, ekklesia, is not a word that the first members of the church associated with a religious activity. Theworld signifies the assembly of the people of God. It is instructive tolook at what their understanding of the purpose of assembling as agroup signified, how it has shaped our understanding of church, and howreading these texts might renew and expand our understanding.Unit 3. The Fellowship of the Table (November 2021)Theopening of God’s people to both Jews and Greeks, men and women, mastersand slaves required people previously unaccustomed to eating togetherto sit down at a common table. When we look at the Gospel narratives, wesee Jesus modeling open table fellowship. In this unit, we will look atthe significance of the practice of open table fellowship in the churchas a sign of God’s shared abundance, ministry of reconciliation, andcelebration.

Scripture uses the water motif in many ways. Water is dangerous as it represents a metaphor for chaos, historical enemies, God’s judgment, devastation of drought-stricken land, and personal distress. As well, water is a gift from God for the flourishing of all creation, refreshment for body and soul, and source of eternal life embodied in Jesus. Thirst for water and provision of water are metaphors for the human relationship with God. Bible lessons in this unit are based on Genesis 21, Exodus 17, Psalm 42, John 7, and Matthew 25.Spiritual Practice: Creation CareUnit 3ShelterIn major cities and small towns across the country, many people have lived experience with homelessness. One of the major causes of homelessness is rooted in childhood trauma. Mental illness, sometimes stemming from such trauma, is another contributing factor, among others. Exploring the theme of shelter in Scripture cannot find ancient analogies for what today is becoming a crisis compounded by economic and social vulnerabilities. Even so, we can imagine and extrapolate, based on related themes and texts, that the physical security of home is a relevant theological construct then as now. Although various texts may make it easy to rush to focus our attention on spiritual shelter in God’s presence, those who experience such a home in God find resources to extend hospitality and care through various means with those who today are experiencing homelessness. Tests of Faith The quarter's first four lessons deal with powerful faith, simple faith, struggling faith, and resurrection faith by examining biblical texts from Mark's Gospel. Restorative Faith The first lesson in the second unit examines Luke's account of the healing of the centurion's servant, while the second lesson continues in Luke 7 with a focus on the woman who anointed Jesus' feet with expensive perfume. The third lesson features Luke's account of Jesus healing the demon-possessed man; and the next lesson, also from Luke, explores the account of the prodigal son. by Sarah McgiverinSpring theme: God Loves Us Psalms | Joel | Jonah | John | Romans | Ephesians | 1 John This spring, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "God Loves Us." God's love for us is evident in Scripture from the creation of the first humans through God's constant interactions with individuals and groups of people in their historical circumstances and developments. A survey of select Old and New Testament Scriptures reveals dynamic and encouraging aspects of God’s constant love for humankind God's Eternal, Preserving, Renewing Love Four lessons from First John, Ephesians, John, and Joel depict God's love for humans as primary and as the source of all love. These lessons show that God's love overflows, redeems, unites, and renews. The first lesson depicts God as love and the source of all love. The second lesson concentrates on God's redemptive, overflowing, and uniting love in Christ. The third lesson comes from Christ's high priestly prayer to God describing God's love for Jesus and all who believe in Christ. The fourth lesson shows the ultimate restoring and renewing power of God's love. God's Caring, Saving, and Upholding Love The second unit offers five lessons drawn from Psalms, John, and Romans and revealing God as protector, preserver, healer, comforter, and savior of the people. This spring our lessons encourage us to walk alongside Jesus and his disciples on Jesus’ final journey to Jerusalem and explore the nature of faith that calls us to follow Jesus despite our uncertainty and doubts. We rest so that we can work harder and earn more money so that we can take vacations away from our community. In the Bible, rest from work had a different purpose. One worked to prepare for the sabbath. On the sabbath, one participated together with the entire community, the livestock, and the land in a shared rest that signified the well-being and abundance that God intended for creation. No one was required to work to make another’s leisure possible.
