Adult Bible Studies Teacher Fall 2019
by Stan PurdumSummer Theme: God Genesis | Exodus | Proverbs | Hebrews | Joshua | Psalms |John Romans | Deuteronomy | Habakkuk | Acts This fall, our lessons focus on God, what it means that we are created in God's image, and what it means to worship God alone. The writer of the student book lessons is Clara Welch; the teacher book writer is Stan Purdum. God, the Creator This unit takes us through texts that help us discern what "Godness" is. The readings from Genesis present the Lord as the divine initiator of the cosmos and as the creator of humankind. The Exodus text reminds us that God is not limited to what we can know of or imagine about God, and that mystery remains part of God's nature. In Lesson 4, we learn about Wisdom as an essential part of who God is. And Lesson 5, invites us to consider Christ's role with God in the world's creation. These lessons encourage us to develop the spiritual practice of mindfulness. In God's Image This unit focuses on the human condition. Lesson 6 recalls the story of the sin of Achan, reminding us of the chasm sin imposes between ourselves and our Creator. Lesson 7 takes us to Psalm 51, which is a prayer that models the nature of penitence that asks God to bridge the breach caused by sin. Lesson 8 lets us hear Jesus talking about being born anew and how that provides entry into the kingdom of God. Lesson 9 takes us to a text in Romans, which enables us to consider what the redeemed life looks like. These lessons help us focus on the spiritual practice of confession. Worship This unit unites around the theme "objects of worship," with "objects" meaning not worship aids, such as candles and paraments, but those things we place ahead of God. In Lesson 10, we look at the first two of the Ten Commandments. Lesson 11 takes us to the story of the gold calf and gives us a chance to think about why we may deliberately choose to worship that which is not God. Lesson 12 reminds us that nothing we worship other than God can impart life. And Lesson 13 invites us to understand that the worship impulse is only satisfied when it is directed toward God. These lessons lead us deeper into the spiritual practice of worship. Both supplementary and complementary to the Adult Bible Studies student book, the teacher book provides small-group leaders, teachers, and facilitators with additional biblical background and exposition and suggestions for guiding group discussion. Adult Bible Studies Teacher Spring 2017: God Loves Us
by Stan PurdumSpring theme: God Loves Us Psalms | Joel | Jonah | John | Romans | Ephesians | 1 John This spring, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "God Loves Us." God's love for us is evident in Scripture from the creation of the first humans through God's constant interactions with individuals and groups of people in their historical circumstances and developments. A survey of select Old and New Testament Scriptures reveals dynamic and encouraging aspects of God's constant love for humankind God's Eternal, Preserving, Renewing Love Four lessons from First John, Ephesians, John, and Joel depict God's love for humans as primary and as the source of all love. These lessons show that God's love overflows, redeems, unites, and renews. The first lesson depicts God as love and the source of all love. The second lesson concentrates on God's redemptive, overflowing, and uniting love in Christ. The third lesson comes from Christ's high priestly prayer to God describing God's love for Jesus and all who believe in Christ. The fourth lesson shows the ultimate restoring and renewing power of God's love. God's Caring, Saving, and Upholding Love The second unit offers five lessons drawn from Psalms, John, and Romans and revealing God as protector, preserver, healer, comforter, and savior of the people. The first lesson reveals total reliance on God as shepherd who cares for every need of the sheep. The second lesson reveals God's love in sending God's only Son for human salvation. The third lesson recounts the Resurrection event in which God's love is displayed as victory over death. The fourth lesson elaborates on the force and power of God's love in Christ to reconcile, justify, and preserve the believer. The final lesson in this unit focuses on Jesus' words describing himself in the role of the Good Shepherd. God's Pervasive and Sustaining Love Four lessons from the Book of Jonah highlight God's unconditional love for humans and the natural world, as well as God's continuing care and concern for individual and group relationships and developments. The first lesson concentrates on God's care for the natural world and humanity. The second lesson focuses on God's providential care in preserving Jonah in the belly of the fish. The third lesson focuses on God's love and preservation of a nation of people who repent and turn to God. The fourth lesson depicts and elaborates on God's pervasive love for all creation. God calls ordinary people from diverse backgrounds to make a difference. From the days of the judges to the prophets to the early church leaders, God called, and the faithful answered. The student book writer is Barbara Derrick. The writer for the teacher book is Gary Thompson. Called to Be Strong The first four lessons this quarter introduce the era of the judges. The Book of Judges continues the history of Israel after Joshua's death. God raised up a series of national leaders called judges. Empowered by God, judges delivered the people from their enemies. Calling of Prophets The five lessons in this quarter's second unit look at how God called various prophets at different times for specific purposes. Included in this unit are the calls and responses of Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Amos. Calls in the New Testament The final four lessons this quarter demonstrate that God continued to work through ordinary people. Their witness reminded the early church that God assures the success of those who will answer God's call. The unit highlights the calls of Stephen, Peter, Philip, Ananias, and Paul. by Timothy BryanSummer Theme: A Covenant in Christ Jesus Ruth | 1 Samuel | Matthew | Luke | Ephesians This summer, our lessons focus on how Jesus fulfilled the Law in the sense that it was given full meaning. Jesus emphasized the deep, underlying messages of the gospel; and this same message is continued through the apostle Paul and the writer of Hebrews. Relationships of faith empower us to live the covenant and spread the gospel message. The writer of the student book lessons is Kevin Baker; the teacher book writer is Timothy Bryan. A Fulfilled Covenant The first unit, in four lessons, reveals a new sign of the covenant for Jewish and Gentile believers, as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, Hebrews, and Colossians. During the celebration of the Passover, Jesus explained to the disciples that he would initiate a new covenant through his death. Paul explains that the sign of the covenant is now a relationship of the heart between God and God's people, not circumcision. A Heartfelt Covenant The four lessons in this unit give new meaning and purpose to the Law. According to Matthew, Jesus began teaching the Law in a way that gave life to the hearer and the doer. Unlike other teachers of the Law, Jesus preached the transforming righteousness of the Kingdom. Jesus challenged the mere external observance of God's law without internal transformation. Covenant: A Personal Perspective The four lessons in this unit focus on personal relationships between people in 1 Samuel, Ruth, and Ephesians. Ultimately, those relationships pave the way for the Messiah. After Christ established the New Testament church, relationships between people have been based on relationship with Christ Jesus. These relationships continue the work of Christ Jesus by spreading the gospel message. by Brian RussellWinter theme: Toward a New Creation Luke | Psalms | Galatians This winter, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Creation: A Divine Cycle." With the advent of the Savior by the power of the Holy Spirit, God set in motion the fulfillment of the divine plan of salvation. Through Luke's Gospel, several psalms, and the epistle to the Galatians, we explore God's ongoing actions in blessing and reconciling the whole creation. The student book writer is Kevin Baker; Brian Russell is the writer for the teacher book. The Savior Has Been Born The four lessons in this unit are developed from the Gospel of Luke. Lesson 1 explores how Mary, a virgin, received and joyfully accepted the announcement that she had been highly favored by God to give birth to God's Son. Lesson 2 looks at the affirmation of Elizabeth, Mary's cousin, to her news. Lesson 3 focuses on John's mission as the forerunner of the Savior. The Christmas Day lesson deals with the birth of Jesus and the circumstances and events pursuant to it. Praise From and for God's Creation The five lessons in this unit employ five different psalms. Several psalms emphasize praise for God that emanates from creation itself. Others invite us to praise God for creation. The Birthing of a New Community This unit has four lessons from Galatians that show us how God's creative process can be seen through the birthing of a new faith community with Jesus Christ as its foundation. The lessons address the importance of spiritual freedom, cooperation, and righteous living in building and maintaining the community. The Christian season that calls us to wait is met with a culture that encourages us to decorate, entertain, buy, spend, and entertain, with calendars booked from season’s beginning to its end. Such ceaseless activity can blind us to the awe and wonder of God’s presence all around us, leaving us spiritually parched, empty, and unable to join in the life and work to which God calls us. These Bible lessons call us to wait and to respond with wonder to the God who came to us in Jesus Christ, thus equipping ourselves to bear witness to our faith.Unit 1: Wait for ItAdvent is a time of anticipation and waiting. This unit invites us to explore waiting as an important element in three episodes in Luke’s telling of the Christmas story.
