They then move to a closer look at what it means to belong to the family of God and culminate in a series of lessons on love and how it informs and changes our relationships. The writer of the student book is Sue Mink.Unit 1Power and VulnerabilityGod’s incarnation was into a poor family from a village of no consequence, vulnerable to the whims and machinations of the mighty Roman Empire. While some people reading this Bible study can relate to the poverty and obscurity, most will read it as citizens of a great world power. Some people know from experience that power can be abused even against a government’s own citizens, but others have known only the protection and benefits of that power. These lessons invite us to read the Nativity stories from the vantage point of the victims of empire.Scriptures: Judges 9:1-15; Matthew 1:1-25; Matthew 2:1-12; Matthew 2:13-15Spiritual Practice: Acts of MercyUnit 2Power and BelongingThe lessons in this unit follow the trajectory of biblical imagery for faith development from adoption through baptism and infancy in faith, into youthful excitement and exuberance, and then to a mature faith that struggles, challenges, and questions.Scriptures: Galatians 3:23—4:7; Luke 15:11-32; John 17:1-24 and Ephesians 4:14; Colossians 3:12-17; Matthew 22:1-14Spiritual Practice: Rule of LifeUnit 3The Power of LoveOne of the distinct traits of biblical theology is the emphasis on God’s hesed (“lovingkindness”) and Jesus’ selfless love. In theearly twentieth century, a great deal of ink was spilled trying to distinguish agápe love by which we become channels of God’slove from philía, friendship in which reciprocity is important, and éros, a passionate sort of love. Recent scholarship finds that Greek and biblical thought blurs the lines of agápe and philía and finds a greater emphasis on relationships. While we should enact our love without thoughts of personal gain, the ultimate goal of loving our enemies is becoming their friend.Scriptures: 1 John 4:7-21 and Ruth 4; 1 Kings 3:16-28; 1 Samuel 18:1-4, 19:1-7, 20; Matthew 16:21-28Spiritual Practice: Spiritual FriendshipOther Adult Bible Study components, sold separately, include:Teacher/Commentary KitThe Kit includes a Teacher Book and a Concise Commentary that are both supplementary and complementary to the Adult Bible Studies student bookThe Teacher Book provides small-group leaders, teachers, and facilitators with additional biblical background and exposition and suggestions for guiding group discussion. Adult Biliteracy: Sociocultural and Programmatic Responses
by AntonioOffering an in-depth view of adult literacy/biliteracy by merging two fields—adult literacy and English as a Second Language—this volume brings to the forefront linguistic, demographic, sociocultural, workforce, familial, academic, and other issues surrounding the development of bilingualism and biliteracy by adults in the U.S. As such, it helps to fill a gap in the research literature on language development among adults which has traditionally placed more emphasis on the development of oral English. Most important, it brings to light issues that are integral to the success of immigrant populations in the U.S.—issues that politicians, policymakers, educators, and employers must place at the top of their agendas as immigration reform is being formulated and implemented.Adult Biliteracy: Sociocultural and Programmatic Responses critically analyzes the assumptions that normalize monolingual and mono-literate approaches to adult education and to the teaching of English to immigrants and other language minorities in the U.S. By integrating theoretical principles with their applications, it furthers the discussion of the effects that bilingualism and biliteracy have on adult instruction. Applying research-based theoretical principles to the contexts in which adults learn, work, engage in civic participation, raise their children, and come together in community, this volume sheds light on the multiple ways in which adults use their first and second languages in the diverse sociocultural and educational contexts in which they function and learn in two languages.Highly relevant for researchers, professionals, and students concerned with second-language education, adult education, and applied linguistics, this book will particularly interest those whose work focuses on the education of immigrant and national language minorities.
Adult Bullying: Perpetrators and Victims
by Peter RandallThe frequency and severity of personal harrassment is a problem that is only just beginning to be uncovered. In Adult Bullying, psychologist Peter Randall uses the voices of both bullies and victims to reveal the misery that many adults endure. He describes the processes that turn child bullies into adult bullies, often aware of their behaviour but unable to stop it. The workplace and the neighbourhood replace the playground, but the tactics and patterns of reward remain the same. The adult victim has little or no more power than the child counterpart, often changing jobs to escape the attentions of the bully. Similarly, managers like teachers, often fail to tackle the complaints of the victim with the seriousness the problem deserves, preferring to believe that the fuss is unwarranted. Adult Bullying will be welcomed by managers, counsellors, social workers and anyone who has experienced personal harrassment. Effective ways to deal with bullying in the community and the workplace are discussed, with particular attention given to the implications for managers and employees.
