An Obama's Journey: My Odyssey of Self-Discovery across Three Cultures
by Mark Obama NdesandjoIn this revealing and beautifully written memoir, Mark Obama Ndesandjo, recounts his complex relationship with his older half-brother, President Barack Obama, including their first meeting in Kenya over twenty years ago. The book also offers the author's inspiring personal story about identity and multiculturalism. Rare family photos add to the book's personal nature as does the intense recounting of domestic violence in the home of Barack Obama Sr.’s and his third wife, Ruth Baker, Mark’s Jewish-American mother. The book also attempts to set the records straight on several points of the president’s best-selling memoir Dreams from My Father. In its connection to President Obama, Mark's story takes on an even greater significance because it becomes all the more directly, a story of American identity and a window into the complex figure of the father they share, Barack Obama Sr., their roots in Kenya, their multicultural identities, and their relationships with America.
An Obedient Father: A Novel (Fsg Classics Ser.)
by Akhil SharmaRevised and featuring a new foreword by the author, this uncompromising novel returns, more powerful than ever: "A portrait of a country ravaged by vendetta and graft, its public spaces loud with the complaints of religious bigots and its private spaces cradling unspeakable pain." (Hilary Mantel, New York Review of Books)An Obedient Father introduced one of the most admired voices in contemporary fiction. Set in Delhi in the 1990s, it tells the story of an inept bureaucrat enmired in corruption, and of the daughter who alone knows the true depth of his crimes. Decried in India for its frank treatment of child abuse, the novel was widely praised elsewhere for its compassion, and for a plot that mingled the domestic with the political, tragedy with farce. Yet, as Akhil Sharma writes in his foreword to this new edition, he was haunted by what he considered shortcomings within the book: almost twenty years later, he returned to face them. Here is the result, a leaner, surer version with even greater power.

An Objective Theory of Probability (Routledge Revivals)
by Donald GilliesThis reissue of D. A. Gillies highly influential work, first published in 1973, is a philosophical theory of probability which seeks to develop von Mises’ views on the subject. In agreement with von Mises, the author regards probability theory as a mathematical science like mechanics or electrodynamics, and probability as an objective, measurable concept like force, mass or charge. On the other hand, Dr Gillies rejects von Mises’ definition of probability in terms of limiting frequency and claims that probability should be taken as a primitive or undefined term in accordance with modern axiomatic approaches. This of course raises the problem of how the abstract calculus of probability should be connected with the ‘actual world of experiments’. It is suggested that this link should be established, not by a definition of probability, but by an application of Popper’s concept of falsifiability. In addition to formulating his own interesting theory, Dr Gillies gives a detailed criticism of the generally accepted Neyman Pearson theory of testing, as well as of alternative philosophical approaches to probability theory. The reissue will be of interest both to philosophers with no previous knowledge of probability theory and to mathematicians interested in the foundations of probability theory and statistics.
An Oblique Approach
by David Drake Eric FlintIn northern India the Malwa have created an empire of unexampled evil. Guided or possessed by an intelligence from beyond time, with new weapons, old treachery, and an implacable will to power, the Malwa will sweep over the whole Earth. Only three things stand between the Malwa and their plan of eternal domination:
Byzantium. The Empire of Rome in the East. Compared to what the Malwa are creating, think of it as Camelot.
A crystal with a vision. It brings a warning for all mankind regarding the Malwa, and a simple instruction: fight. If you lose, commit suicide.
And a man -- Belisarius. He is arguably the greatest commander Earth has ever known. Fortunately he above all men understands that war is not just a matter of weapons, but of the men who use them -- and most especially of the man who commands those men. Threatened by imperial suspicion and Malwa conspiracies, impeded by border wars, target of spies and hired assassins, Belisarius must journey into the very heart of the Malwa empire as the first step in preventing the crystal's nightmare vision from becoming the real future of us all. And while he and the heroic band he leads are used to betting their lives, now what is at stake is Eternity.

An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement
by Marie ClayThis third edition of Marie Clay's highly-valued An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement presents her familiar assessment tasks designed for systematic observation of young children as they learn to read and write. Always respecting the author's intention, the editors have taken a fresh look at the way the book's message is communicated to teachers. Layout and expression have been refreshed to ensure clear understanding, and the administration and interpretation of each task in the survey have been carefully structured for consistent delivery.

The observation procedures arose from a theory of how children learn to manage the complex task of reading and writing continuous text. That process is described in Marie Clay's books Becoming Literate: the Construction of Inner Control; Change Over Time in Children's Literacy Development, and By Different Paths to Common Outcomes. The intervention described in Literacy Lessons Designed for Individuals makes use of these observation procedures.
An Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement
by Marie M. ClayThis book provides teachers and school systems with essential information about how to assess young children's progress in literacy learning. The six tasks of the Observation Survey are used by teachers across the world to explore children's knowledge of early reading and writing, monitor progress, guide instruction, and reliably identify children for supplementary assistance.

This fourth edition of Marie Clay's seminal text includes two important new developments: 1. a revised task for assessing children's phonemic awareness and sound-letter knowledge is more sensitive to different rates of progress and to the difficulties some children might have; 2. updated norms for five of the Observation Survey tasks will enable teachers and schools to more accurately monitor and compare the progress of five-to-seven-year-old children across different aspects of literacy learning.

The observation procedures arose from a theory of how children learn to manage the complex task of learning to read and write continuous text.

An Obsession with Anne Frank: Meyer Levin and the Diary
by Lawrence GraverAnne Frank's Diary has been acclaimed throughout the world as an indelible portrait of a gifted girl and as a remarkable document of the Holocaust. For Meyer Levin, the respected writer who helped bring the Diary to an American audience, the Jewish girl's moving story became a thirty-year obsession that altered his life and brought him heartbreaking sorrow. Lawrence Graver's fascinating account of Meyer Levin's ordeal is a story within a story. What began as a warm collaboration between Levin and Anne's father, Otto Frank, turned into a notorious dispute that lasted several decades and included litigation and public scandal. Behind this story is another: one man's struggle with himself—as a Jew and as a writer—in postwar America. Looming over both stories is the shadow of the Holocaust and its persistent, complex presence in our lives. Graver's book is based on hundreds of unpublished documents and on interviews with some of the Levin-Frank controversy's major participants. It illuminates important areas of American culture: publishing, law, religion, politics, and the popular media. The "Red Scare," anti-McCarthyism, and the commercial imperatives of Broadway are all players in this book, along with the assimilationist mood among many Jews and the simplistic pieties of American society in the 1950s. Graver also examines the different and often conflicting ways that people the world over, Jewish and Gentile, wanted Anne Frank and her much-loved book to be represented. That her afterlife has in extraordinary ways taken on the shape and implications of myth makes Graver's story—and Meyer Levin's—even more compelling. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1995.

An Obstrusive Giant
by Rafael EstradaIt’s a book that hides a giant with a toothache and a castle that hides a trap. Daniel took out his flashlight and focused on the dotted moss wall. Then he saw through the ivy, that the walls were not made with stones bonded with mortar, as usual in castles, but with the remains of broken toys: hundreds of thousands, millions of forgotten, abandoned, shattered and crushed toys. He looked at the giant's feet and observed that he didn't wear shoes, boots, or anything like that, instead he wore them with leather strips, dirty and poorly rolled up. He noticed the boy, he licked his mouth and walked towards him striding, grinding his teeth. His friends, a book that is not what it seems, a giant with toothache, some shameless toys and a castle that hides a trap inside the book. “It's a good option for children in the house to read a book with an adventure that will excite and entertain them. If you have to give a gift to a child, why don't you introduce this nosy giant who likes to eat bored children?”
