Jeanne Bendick, through text and pictures, admirably succeeds in bringing to life the ancient Greek mathematician who enriched mathematics and all branches of science. Against the backdrop of Archimedes' life and culture, the author discusses the man's work, his discoveries and the knowledge later based upon it. The simple, often humorous, illustrations and diagrams greatly enhance the text.

Archimedes in the 21st Century: Proceedings of a World Conference at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (Trends in the History of Science)

by Chris Rorres

This book is a collection of papers presented at the "Archimedes in the 21st Century" world conference, held at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 2013. This conference focused on the enduring and continuing influence of Archimedes in our modern world, celebrating his centuries of influence on mathematics, science, and engineering. Archimedes planted the seeds for a myriad of seminal ideas that would grow over the ages. Each chapter surveys the growth of one or more of these seeds, and the fruit that they continue to bear to this day. The conference speakers contributing to this book are actively involved in STEM fields whose origins trace back to Archimedes, many of whom have conducted and published research that extends Archimedes' work into the 21st century. The speakers are not historians, so while historical context is provided, this book is uniquely focused on the works themselves as opposed to their history. The breadth and depth of Archimedes' influence will inspire, delight, and even surprise readers from a variety of fields and interests including historians, mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. Only a modest background in math is required to read this book, making it accessible to curious readers of all ages.

Learn the story of one of the most important mathematic thinkers of all time in Archimedes: Ancient Greek Mathematician.

Arching Backward: The Mystical Initiation of a Contemporary Woman

by Janet Adler

Arching Backward is the story of an American woman who found herself suddenly and violently immersed in a mystical initiation for which she was not consciously prepared. For four years, Janet Adler's life was dominated by the transforming experience of a primal energy and the visions that were created by it. She was not seeking spiritual experience, nor was she a student of any particular mystical tradition. But the visions brought her into the realm of the sacred, transforming her body into a conduit for spiritual energy. The writings collected here record her visions and describe the way this contemporary woman dealt with the impact of this energy on her physical body, her work, and her relationships. Her story offers a guide for others on this journey and provides a powerful affirmation of women's experience of the spirit.

Arching in Piled Embankments Including the Effects of Reinforcement and Subsoil

by Yan Zhuang

This Open access book examined the performance of the reinforced piled embankments in both plane strain and three-dimensional conditions. The arching mechanisms involved in the piled embankments have been investigated by conducting a series of finite element analyses. A better understanding of the variation for the performance of the piled embankments along with the change of the embankment geometry and piles arrangement has been achieved. This book also considered predictions of reinforcement tension in a piled embankment from British standard BS 8006 published in 2010 and the 2012 amended version, and compared the results with finite-element model predictions. Good predictions of maximum reinforcement sag are achieved by slight modification of the BS 8006 method. Furthermore, the book considered the potentially beneficial contribution of a lightly overconsolidated clay subsoil layer, both in the finite-element predictions and as a simple modification to the BS 8006 predictive method. When compared to the finite-element results the proposed modified BS 8006 prediction is quite accurate. Finally, the concept of an interaction diagram and corresponding equation for use in design is proposed, which considered the effect of soil arching, the contribution of reinforcement and the subsoil. The calculation of the vertical stress carried by the subsoil due to arching effect and reinforcement for multilayered soil was proposed. The results show that subsoil gives a major contribution to overall vertical equilibrium, while the reinforcement gives obvious contribution at relatively large settlement. Good design practice is necessary to prevent excessive settlement of piled embankments. This book can enhance the understanding of the load transfer mechanism in piled embankments. The research results will provide a scientific basis and technical support for the settlement control of embankments for the design life of the infrastructure in soft soil areas.

Archipelagic American Studies

by Brian Russell Roberts Michelle Ann Stephens

Departing from conventional narratives of the United States and the Americas as fundamentally continental spaces, the contributors to Archipelagic American Studies theorize America as constituted by and accountable to an assemblage of interconnected islands, archipelagoes, shorelines, continents, seas, and oceans. They trace these planet-spanning archipelagic connections in essays on topics ranging from Indigenous sovereignty to the work of Édouard Glissant, from Philippine call centers to US militarization in the Caribbean, and from the great Pacific garbage patch to enduring overlaps between US imperialism and a colonial Mexican archipelago. Shaking loose the straitjacket of continental exceptionalism that hinders and permeates Americanist scholarship, Archipelagic American Studies asserts a more relevant and dynamic approach for thinking about the geographic, cultural, and political claims of the United States within broader notions of America. Archipelagic Identities: Literature and Identity in the Atlantic Archipelago, 1550–1800

by Simon Mealor

Archipelagic Identities explores the invention and interplay of national, regional and linguistic identities in the literatures of early modern Britain and Ireland. The volume includes innovative work by leading practitioners of British studies, and sheds new light on classic cases such as Edmund Spenser's Irish experience, whilst also introducing less familiar writers and texts, such as Anne Dowriche's The French Historie, William Browne's Britannia Pastorals, William Richards' Wallography, Anne Bradstreet's 'Dialogue between Old England and New', and the works of Gaelic bards and French Huguenot refugees. Foregrounding issues of gender, class and migratory identity which have not previously received significant attention in this field, Archipelagic Identities brings British studies into the mainstream of contemporary literary criticism.

Archipelago

by Laila Malik

The islands of an archipelago are isolated above sea level but attached underwater; connected yet separate. archipelago, the debut poetry collection from Laila Malik, traces fragments of family, becoming and unbecoming against the shifting shorelines of loss, multigenerational migration, and (un)belonging.Malik's lyrical poems intertwine histories of exile and ecological devastation. Beginning with a coming of age in the 80s and 90s between Canada, the Arabian Gulf, East Africa and Kashmir, they subvert conventions of lineage, instead drawing on the truths of inter-ethnic histories amidst sparse landscapes of deserts, oceans, and mountains. They question why the only certainties of "home" are urgency and impossibility. At its core, archipelago is a letter to the daughters who come before and after, a quiet disclosure of barbed ancestral legacies that only come into focus through poetry.

Archipelago Tourism Revisited: Core-Periphery Dynamics after the Pandemic (New Directions in Tourism Analysis)

by Godfrey Baldacchino

This timely and innovative book explores the dynamics of inter-island/island-island tourism – also known as archipelago tourism – on the cusp of the post-pandemic epoch.Embellished with illustrative maps and diagrams, the volume examines what novel approaches have been developed, if at all, so as not to repeat past mistakes, and nurture a more sustainable, 'island tourism' business model. It looks at how the political-economic relationship between main and outer islands changed during the pandemic and, if so, whether this shift has had a bearing on current tourism policy. The book also explores how these and other changes are reflected in how: islands are branded; island destinations are marketed; and island transport logistics play out. An array of archipelagos of varying sizes and locations is explored, assuring a global perspective. The book furthers our understanding of core-periphery dynamics in archipelago tourism. The volume will be of interest to students, researchers, policy makers and academics in the fields of tourism policy and planning, sustainability, island studies and development studies.

Archipelago Tourism: Policies and Practices (New Directions in Tourism Analysis)

by Godfrey Baldacchino

Exploring the conceptual insights provided by the archipelagic 'twist' in the context of tourism principles, policies and practices, this volume draws on an international series of case studies to analyse best practice in branding, marketing and logistics in archipelago tourist destinations. The book asks and seeks to answer such questions as: How to 'sell' a multi-island destination, without risking a message that may be too complex and diffuse for audiences to grab on to? Does one encourage visitors to do 'island hopping'; and, if so, how and with what logistic facilities? How does one ascribe specific island destinations within an overall archipelago brand? Would smaller islands rebel against a composite branding strategy that actually benefits other islands? How does one read or craft transport policies as a function of the 'reterritorialisation' of a multi-island space? This book pioneers the exploration of the archipelago as tourism study focus (and not just locus); a heuristic device for rendering islands as sites of different tourism practices, industries and policies, but also of challenges and possibilities.

Archipelago of Justice: Law in France's Early Modern Empire

by Laurie M. Wood

An examination of France’s Atlantic and Indian Ocean empires through the stories of the little-known people who built it This book is a groundbreaking evaluation of the interwoven trajectories of the people, such as itinerant ship-workers and colonial magistrates, who built France’s first empire between 1680 and 1780 in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These imperial subjects sought political and legal influence via law courts, with strategies that reflected local and regional priorities, particularly regarding slavery, war, and trade. Through court records and legal documents, Wood reveals how courts became liaisons between France and new colonial possessions.

Archipelago of Resettlement: Vietnamese Refugee Settlers and Decolonization across Guam and Israel-Palestine (American Crossroads #65)

by Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. What happens when refugees encounter Indigenous sovereignty struggles in the countries of their resettlement? From April to November 1975, the US military processed over 112,000 Vietnamese refugees on the unincorporated territory of Guam; from 1977 to 1979, the State of Israel granted asylum and citizenship to 366 non-Jewish Vietnamese refugees. Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi analyzes these two cases to theorize what she calls the refugee settler condition: the fraught positionality of refugee subjects whose resettlement in a settler colonial state is predicated on the unjust dispossession of an Indigenous population. This groundbreaking book explores two forms of critical geography: first, archipelagos of empire, examining how the Vietnam War is linked to the US military buildup in Guam and unwavering support of Israel, and second, corresponding archipelagos of trans-Indigenous resistance, tracing how Chamorro decolonization efforts and Palestinian liberation struggles are connected through the Vietnamese refugee figure. Considering distinct yet overlapping modalities of refugee and Indigenous displacement, Gandhi offers tools for imagining emergent forms of decolonial solidarity between refugee settlers and Indigenous peoples.
