Schubert: The Complete Song Texts

by Richard Wigmore

This is a complete collection of Franz Schubert's solo songs in German originals with English translations. A small number are in Italian with English translations. Schubert's songs are the most frequently performed of the whole vocal repertoire, and, for many people, the best loved. They range from the very short--lasting barely two minutes--to immensely long ballads, and scenas which are virtually cantatas. Schubert was among the most prolific of composers, having written (in addition to a large output of symphonies, sonatas, quartets, masses and operas) more than 600 songs by the time of his death in 1828 at the age of 31. Almost all his songs are settings of German poetry, but a few use Italian words, and the texts of several are German translations of English poetry and prose by Sir Walter Scott, Shakespeare, James Macpherson (Ossian) and others. Schubert composed more than a hundred settings of Goethe, the greatest of all German poets, and many of these are among the finest and best loved of his songs. But he also set the work of other major German poets of the 18th and early 19th centuries. The most famous of the songs have appeared in previously published volumes of Lieder texts, such as The Penguin Books of Lieder and The Fischer-Dieskau Book of Lieder; but more and more, these days, singers are discovering the beauties of the less familiar songs, and adding them to concert programmes and recordings. This book fulfils the growing need for parallel texts and translations of all the songs, and is the first in its field. The prose translations, keeping as close as possible to the originals, are most sympathetic, and readable in their own right, and will be invaluable to the singer with little or no German, as well as a delight to the many music-lovers who listen to these songs on radio, on record and at concerts. This electronic edition is formatted with a line of English translation below each line of German original and is DAISY formatted with each song at level 1.

The Early History of the Ancient Near East, 9000-2000 B.C.

by Hans J. Nissen Elizabeth Lutzeier

Hans J. Nissen here provides a much-needed overview of 7000 years of development in the ancient Near East from the beginning of settled life to the formation of the first regional states. His approach to the study of Mesopotamian civilization differs markedly from conventional orientations, which impose a sharp division between prehistoric and historic, literate, periods. Nissen argues that this approach is too rigid to explain the actual development of that civilization. He deemphasizes the invention of writing as a turning point, viewing it as simply one more phase in the evolution of social complexity and as the result of specific social, economic, and political factors. With a unique combination of material culture analysis written data, Nissan traces the emergence of the earliest isolated settlements, the growth of a network of towns, the emergence of city states, and finally the appearance of territorial states. From his synthesis of the prehistoric and literate periods comes a unified picture of the development of Mesopotamian economy, society, and culture. Lavishly illustrated, The Early History of the Ancient Near East, 9000-2000 B.C. is an authoritative work by one of the most insightful observers of the evolution and character of Mesopotamian civilization.

Blitzed: Drugs In Nazi Germany

by Norman Ohler Shaun Whiteside

The sensational German bestseller on the overwhelming role of drug-taking in the Third Reich, from Hitler to housewives. The Nazis presented themselves as warriors against moral degeneracy. Yet, as Norman Ohler's gripping bestseller reveals, the entire Third Reich was permeated with drugs: cocaine, heroin, morphine and, most of all, methamphetamines, or crystal meth, used by everyone from factory workers to housewives, and crucial to troops' resilience - even partly explaining German victory in 1940. The promiscuous use of drugs at the very highest levels also impaired and confused decision-making, with Hitler and his entourage taking refuge in potentially lethal cocktails of stimulants administered by the physician Dr Morell as the war turned against Germany. While drugs cannot on their own explain the events of the Second World War or its outcome, Ohler shows, they change our understanding of it. Blitzed forms a crucial missing piece of the story.

The Collapse: The Accidental Opening of the Berlin Wall

by Mary Elise Sarotte

The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961 to end all traffic between the city’s two halves: the democratic west and the communist east. The iconic symbol of a divided Europe, the Wall became a focus of western political pressure on East Germany; as Ronald Reagan’s famously said in a 1987 speech in Berlin, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” But as award-winning historian Mary Sarotte shows in [Title TK] , the opening of the Wall on November 9, 1989 was not, as is commonly believed, the East German government’s deliberate concession to outside influence. It was an accident. A carelessly worded memo written by mid-level bureaucrats, a bumbling press conference given by an inept member of the East German Politburo, the negligence of government leaders, the bravery of ordinary people in East and West Berlin--these combined to bring about the end of nearly forty years of oppression, fear, and enmity in divided Berlin. When the news broke, Washington and Moscow could only stand by and watch as Tom Brokaw and other journalists narrated the televised broadcast of this critical moment in the thawing of the cold war. Sarotte opens her story in the months leading up to that fateful day. Following East German dissidents, she shows how their efforts coalesced around opposition to the regime’s restrictions on foreign travel. The city of Leipzig, close to the border with Czechoslovakia, became a hothouse of activism, and protests there quickly grew into massive demonstrations. The East German Politburo hoped to limit its citizens’ knowledge of these marches, but two daring dissidents, East Berliners Aram Radomski and Siegbert Schefke, managed to evade the Stasi and film the largest of them from a church tower. They then smuggled their tape to West Germany; broadcast in both nations, the footage galvanized activists across East Germany, and precipitated the stunning developments on November 9. Facing mounting pressure from its own citizens, the East German Politburo planned to put off enacting any meaningful change to its travel policy by issuing a deceptive ruling that would appear to offer more freedom, but which in fact would allow the state to maintain strict control over its citizen’s movements. But the bureaucrats tasked with preparing the "new” regulations misunderstood their task, and instead drafted a declaration that said East Germans could freely leave the country. This declaration ended up in the hands of regime spokesman Günter Schabowski, who announced the rules at a press conference without understanding their import. Stunned reporters were soon broadcasting the news around the world. Crowds of East Germans began streaming to the Wall, prompting a showdown with border guards, who received no support or direction from East German leadership as the throngs multiplied. By 11:30, Harald Jäger, a second-tier passport control officer, had had enough and finally opened the wall to the mob gathering outside his gate. Even though East German forces successfully regained control by the morning, it was too late--for the wall, for the regime, and for Communism in Eastern Europe. Drawing on evidence from archives in multiple countries and languages, along with dozens of interviews with key actors, including Harald Jäger, [Title TK] is the definitive account of the event that brought down the East German Politburo and came to represent the final collapse of the Cold War order.

Man of Destiny: FDR and the Making of the American Century

by Alonzo L. Hamby

No president looms larger in twentieth-century American history than Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and few life stories can match his for sheer drama. He was a man of large personality and a president of vast and enduring accomplishments. Yet, as the distinguished historian Alonzo Hamby argues, FDR’s record as president was more mixed than we are often led to believe. Roosevelt was a great politician and war leader, but the New Deal, his most famous legacy, failed to achieve its goal of reviving the nation’s economy, in no small measure because of FDR’s hostility toward the business and financial communities. Hamby is no less perceptive about FDR’s private life. Drawing on overlooked sources, he documents the president’s final months in intimate detail, claiming that his perseverance despite his serious illness must be counted as one of the twentieth century’s great feats of endurance. Man of Destiny is a measured account of the life, both personal and public, of the most important American leader of the twentieth century.

Kaleidoskop: Kultur, Literatur und Grammatik

by Jack Moeller Winnifred R. Adolph Barbara Mabee Simone Berger

Kaleidoskop is essentially two books in one: a cultural and literary reader with a comprehensive review of grammar. This combination allows maximum flexibility for instructors to design their own programs. The 10 topics of the Lekt're section contain a variety of texts and activities, and the 10 Kapitel of the self-contained grammar section (Grammatik) allow instructors to work with the grammar topics in whatever order they choose; the grammar chapters may be treated independently of the reading chapters or used concurrently with the Themen of the same number. Given these materials the instructor can provide a learner-centered classroom with activities that lend themselves to cooperative learning. Kaleidoskop features a flexible four-skills, learner-centered approach that promotes communication and focuses on the literature and culture of the German-speaking world. Reading plays an important role in this text, with exercises for listening, speaking and writing revolving around the wide range of authentic reading selections. These texts are authentic and include advertisements, charts, newspaper and magazine articles, letters, e-mails, forum mails, polls, interviews, biographies, songs, poems, and fiction.

J. S. Bach: The Complete Cantatas

by Richard Stokes Martin Neary

In Lutheran Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries, Sunday church services were five hours long. There would be prayers, liturgy, communion, an hour-long sermon, congregational hymn singing and a 15- to 25-minute "cantata" composed of chorus, vocal solos, and a hymn. These are sometimes referred to as "sermons in music." For a period of five years from 1723 to 1728 Johann Sebastian Bach wrote one of these cantatas almost every week. Sadly, almost 100 of these are lost. Bach's roughly 210 surviving cantatas are a major component of the western musical canon. This book contains their texts and English translations along with those for the Christmas and Easter oratorios. These surviving cantatas contain approximately 245 soprano arias, 223 alto arias, 249 tenor arias, 259 bass arias, many duets, a few trios and a couple of quartets. And all of them are inspired and inspiring. For this Bookshare edition, DAISY markup is provided so that each cantata title is at level 1 and each cantata movement is at level 2. To search for a particular cantata, type BWV, a space, its number, and another space. Each movement is presented fully in its original language (usually German) and then in English translation. To search for a particular movement (Sheep May Safely Graze, for example) which is the ninth movement of Cantata 208, type 208.9. Or to find the text of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring which is the sixth movement of Cantata 147, type 147.6. To quote Bach about music, its only purpose "is the praise of God and the recreation of the soul." Using a music service to which you subscribe or YouTube, ask it to play Bach Cantata 1 or Bach Cantata 51 or Bach Cantata 140 and see if you feel these works of music accomplish their composer's objective for you. For a sense of Bach's humor, ask your music service or YouTube to play Bach Cantata 211 (the Coffee Cantata) or Bach Cantata 212 (the Peasant Cantata). For instrumentation of all the cantatas and their individual movements, see the web site bach-cantatas.com because instrumentation is not included in this book. That site also provides commentary and translations into several other languages as these works continue to have worldwide interest.

The Philosophy of Education

by Noddings

The first edition of Nel Noddings’ Philosophy of Education was acclaimed as the "best overview in the field” by the journal Teaching Philosophy and predicted to "become the standard textbook in philosophy of education” by Educational Theory. This classic text, originally designed to give the education student a comprehensive look at philosophical thought in relation to teaching, learning, research, and educational policy, has now been updated to reflect the most current thinking in the field. A revised chapter on Logic and Critical Thinking makes the topic more accessible to students and examines how critical thinking plays a role in light of the new Common Core standards. Philosophy of Education introduces students to the evolution of educational thought, from the founding fathers to contemporary theorists, with consideration of both analytic and continental traditions. This is an essential text not only for teachers and future teachers, but also for anyone needing a survey of contemporary trends in philosophy of education.

Wind Energy for the Rest of Us

by Paul Gipe

Wind Energy for the Rest of Us straddles two—or more—worlds. The book is about wind energy. It’s not just about small wind turbines. It’s not just about large wind turbines. It’s about the depth and breadth of wind energy, encompassing more than either type of wind turbine. It includes water-pumping windmills and sailing ships. It’s a sprawling book, one minute discussing how to install small wind turbines safely, the next explaining how farmers in Indiana can earn millions by installing their own multimegawatt wind turbines. If it’s a book hard to categorize, that suits its author, Paul Gipe, who likes to think he’s hard to categorize after four decades at the frontiers of renewable energy. His book tells the story of modern wind energy in all its complexity and introduces a North American audience to the trailblazing electricity rebels who have launched a renewable energy revolution in Europe. The book debunks novel wind turbines their promoters claim will generate electricity “too cheap to meter,” and rebukes revisionist historians who falsely argue that it was the aerospace industry that delivered today’s modern wind turbines. Gipe explains why new wind turbines are part of a silent revolution that is changing the way we use wind energy. This revolution doesn’t garner headlines, but is making wind turbines more cost-effective in more places than ever before, lessening the need for new transmission lines, obviating the need for storage, and fueling rapid growth. Gipe refutes many common myths surrounding wind energy and argues persuasively that wind turbines are productive, effective, and environmentally sound. Gipe argues that wind energy is too important to be left to electric utilities and their subsidiaries alone. Wind energy is also for the rest of us, he says. It is our resource. We can develop it and we can own it--ourselves.

Der ursprüngliche Sinn der Himmelslehre: Joachim Bouvets (1656–1730) frühe Missionstheologie in China. Analyse, Transkription und Übersetzung der lateinischen Fassungen (Collectanea Serica. New Series #4)

by Claudia von Collani

The author focuses on one of the most fascinating texts of the 17th and 18th century China mission – the Tianxue benyi 天學本義 (The Original Meaning of the Heavenly Teachings) and the more elaborate Gujin jingtian jian 古今敬天鑒 (Mirror on the Worship of Heaven in Ancient Times and Nowadays), both written and compiled by the Jesuit Joachim Bouvet (1656–1730) with the assistance of Chinese converts. The two works were even translated into Latin in order to support the Jesuit position in the Chinese Rites Controversy in the Roman Curia. Through them, Bouvet presented the Jesuit missionary strategy of accommodation in a nutshell: He aimed at introducing Christianity in the terms of Chinese traditional culture. Thus, Bouvet’s approach can be characterised as an early attempt at a contextualized theology which is meaningful even for contemporary discussions. The present study offers an introduction to Bouvet’s thoughts and works and their respective historical and theological context, a transcription of the Latin texts – the Cœlestis Disciplinæ vera notitia and the De cultu cœlesti Sinarum veterum & modernorum – with an annotated German translation.
