The Nonverbal Communication of Our Gendered and Sexual Selves

by Terrence G. Horgan

This book provides a comprehensive guide to the latest research on the nonverbal cues that signal our biological sex, gender, and sexual orientation to others, as well as our sexual/romantic interest in others. Crucially, it is a volume which incorporates critical perspectives which help to tackle the short-comings associated with the predominant focus on cis-gender, heterosexual individuals . It underscores how specific cues work in conjunction with other cues during the communication of our gendered and sexual selves, and how various factors (cultural, contextual, social, personality variables) impact that process. It also addresses common misconceptions including the notion that the romantic landscape has become more sexualized and predominantly technology driven. This book highlights that we still tend to communicate a romantic interest in each other in quite traditional places, such as school, home, and social events, using tried-and-true nonverbal cues, like gazing and smiling. Across six chapters readers will learn about the cues to our gendered and sexual selves, which exist in our facial and bodily movements, dress, personal artifacts, gestures, body odor, vocal characteristics, touch, and posture, amongst others. This engaging work presents historical and contemporary research findings that will appeal to students and scholars of nonverbal communication, communication studies, the psychology of gender, and sexuality studies.

North of Nowhere: Song of a Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner

by Marie Wilson

The incomparable first-hand account of the historic Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada told by one of the commissioners who led it. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to record the previously hidden history of more than a century of forced residential schooling for Indigenous children. Marie Wilson helped lead that work as one of just three commissioners. With the skills of a journalist, the heart of a mother and grandmother, and the insights of a life as the spouse of a residential school survivor, Commissioner Wilson guides readers through her years witnessing survivor testimony across the country, providing her unique perspective on the personal toll and enduring public value of the commission. In this unparalleled account, she honours the voices of survivors who have called Canada to attention, determined to heal, reclaim, and thrive. Part vital public documentary, part probing memoir, North of Nowhere breathes fresh air into the possibilities of reconciliation amid the persistent legacy of residential schools. It is a call to everyone to view the important and continuing work of reconciliation not as an obligation but as a gift.

Nouns and Verbs in Chinese II: Consequences and Prospects (ISSN)

by Shen Jiaxuan

As the second volume of a two-volume set that re-examines nouns and verbs in Chinese, this book investigates a wide range of linguistic phenomena in Chinese and other languages to substantiate the verbs-as-nouns theory proposed by the author. In an attempt to break free from the shackles of Western linguistic paradigms, which are largely based on Indo-European languages and to a great extent inappropriate for Chinese, the two-volume set unravels the different relationships between nouns and verbs in Chinese, English, and other languages. This volume begins by looking at the problematic issues surrounding complements and adverbials in Chinese in order to explain the multifunctional nature of Chinese word classes. It then makes extensive use of evidence from other languages to explore the typology and evolution of word classes, as well as the cultural roots underlying the distinction between indicative and non-indicative negation in Chinese. In addition, it elucidates the significance and functions of monosyllabic and disyllabic combinations and the phenomenon of markedness reversal, shedding light on the subjectivity of the Chinese word class system. The volume is an important contribution to the study of Chinese linguistics, Chinese grammar, and contrastive linguistics.

Nuclear Physics 2: Radiochronometers and Radiopharmaceuticals

by Ibrahima Sakho

Nuclear Physics 2 explores the applications of various radioisotopes for dating and nuclear medicine imaging. It introduces the theoretical and experimental facts from the observation of the red shift in the spectrum of galaxies (1913), and the discovery of the cosmic microwave background (1965) that led to the validation of the Big Bang model, through which all known chemical elements are created via nucleosynthesis processes. This introduction is followed by a description of the nuclear reactions involved in primordial, stellar, and explosive. The principles of carbon-14, potassium-argon, uranium-thorium and uranium-protactinium dating, along with the principles of lead-210, caesium-137 and beryllium-7 radiochronometers applied to dating, are also described. An overview of the birth of nuclear medicine is given, from the first use of radioisotopes as tracers in plant biology in 1913, to the development of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in 1975. The method of synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals, quality control of radiopharmaceuticals and the experimental methods of the determination of radiochemical purity are presented. The description of the principles of PET and Single-Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT), the presentation of the different radioisotopes used in TEMPS and PET, as well as the presentation of the main scintigraphies and their uses in nuclear medicine conclude the topics studied.

Numerical Exploration of Isolated GaAs-AlGaAs Quantum Well (Synthesis Lectures on Engineering, Science, and Technology)

by Sujaul Chowdhury Urmi Talukder

This book begins with the eigenvalue equation of energy and presents calculation of the energy spectrum of GaAs-AlGaAs Quantum Well using finite difference method and knowledge of potential energy profile, without using expressions for eigenfunctions, continuity of eigenfunctions, or their spatial derivatives at the two abrupt potential steps. The authors find that the results are almost the same as those obtained by solving numerically using regula falsi method, and transcendental equations that are obeyed by the energy levels, where the transcendental equations are obtained by requiring continuity of eigenfunctions and of their spatial derivatives at the two potential steps. Thus, this book confirms that it is possible to numerically calculate the energy spectrum of Quantum Well by the finite difference method when it is not correct or when it is not possible to use continuity of eigenfunctions and their spatial derivatives at the two abrupt potential steps. The authors also showthat it is possible to use the finite difference method in cases where the potential steps are non-abrupt. The book demonstrates this by calculating the energy spectrum of isolated parabolic Quantum Well of finite depth using finite difference method.

Numerical Methods: Classical and Advanced Topics

by Shanmuganathan Rajasekar

This book presents a pedagogical treatment of a wide range of numerical methods to suit the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and teachers and researchers in physics, mathematics, and engineering. For each method, the derivation of the formula/algorithm, error analysis, case studies, applications in science and engineering and the special features are covered. A detailed presentation of solving time-dependent Schrödinger equation and nonlinear wave equations, along with the Monte Carlo techniques (to mention a few) will aid in students’ understanding of several physical phenomena including tunnelling, elastic collision of nonlinear waves, electronic distribution in atoms, and diffusion of neutrons through simulation study. The book covers advanced topics such as symplectic integrators and random number generators for desired distributions and Monte Carlo techniques, which are usually overlooked in other numerical methods textbooks. Interesting updates on classical topics include: curve fitting to a sigmoid and Gaussian functions and product of certain two functions, solving of differential equations in the presence of noise, and solving the time-independent Schrödinger equation.Solutions are presented in the forms of tables and graphs to provide visual aid and encourage a deeper comprehension of the topic. The step-by-step computations presented for most of the problems can be verifiable using a scientific calculator and is therefore appropriate for classroom teaching. The readers of the book will benefit from acquiring an acquittance, knowledge, experience and realization of significance of the numerical methods covered, their applicability to physical and engineering problems and the advantages of applying numerical methods over theoretical methods for specific problems.

Numerische Analyse von gewöhnlichen und retardierten Differentialgleichungen

by Taketomo Mitsui Guang-Da Hu
