This book critically highlights gaps in the political and business decision-making of his Taskforce, most notably on: the limited role of employers and HRM associations in skills building for staff in non-polluter industries (solar and wind); issues of a fair and just transition for workers losing jobs in the polluter industries (fossil fuels); and the lack of employee voice in both work arenas. The overtly pro-conservative and political nature of this UK Taskforce is also analyzed, which occurs and operates in opposition to British trade unions and the wider labor movement, by not prioritizing the just transition, alongside the extensive skills, training and passporting requirements that British workers need to gain decent, green jobs.This book is distinctive in offering the first in-depth analysis and critique of the UK Green Jobs Taskforce, in examining this Taskforce using conservative political ideas, and by critiquing it too. Chapple's Principles of Wound Care and Healing: The Physiological Challenge

Klaassen Peter CharlesworthThis book is a tribute to Dr Joan Chapple CNZM FRACS, who qualified as New Zealand's first formally trained female plastic surgeon in the late 1950s and practised as a plastic and hand surgeon in Auckland, New Zealand for over 38 years. She was selected for surgical training by the late Sir William Manchester, who started the Middlemore Plastic Surgery Unit in December 1950. Joan was an original thinker and a pioneer in the fields of wound care and healing in her own right. She self-published “The Management of Soft Tissue Injuries: Philosophy, Principles and Practice” in 1994, followed by her definitive “Wound Care and Healing: The Physiological Challenge” in 2003. Dr Chapple developed principles of a practical physiological approach to acute wounds that not only benefited their recovery and healing, but also demonstrably reduced the post-operative pain in her patients. She practised and taught these principles at her Soft Tissue Trauma Clinics, based at the Emergency Department of the then Auckland Public Hospital. She also lectured widely to nurses, medical students, general practitioners and surgeons. Joan Chapple’s primary hypotheses were: 1. Injury initiates a series of coordinated living responses. 2. Living cells need to be nurtured in a moist and non-toxic environment. 3. The speed and quality of recovery and repair after injury depends on the circulation. 4. The body recovers and heals with or without treatment, but never without circulation. This republication of “Chapple's Wound Care and Healing” comes with a modern orientation and includes expert commentaries, many of which confirm that Dr Chapple’s thinking, knowledge and surgical principles were ahead of their time. In addition, it contains a new chapter explaining her extraordinary life and career for a world readership. Joan Chapple remains an important virtual mentor to future generations of surgeons, nurses, emergency specialists and general practitioners.

Holmes and the Ripper: Versus Narratives (Crime Files)

This study unpacks the versus corpus in its media dispersal by analysing Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper as serial figures and culture-texts emphasising the increasing palimpsestousness of the former and the multidirectional polymorphousness of the latter, and tracing the overlapping Doylean culture-text. It also addresses the way character constellations are represented, negotiated, and fed back into the versus network, contextualising them within the coalescence of fact and fiction, Gothic and crime fiction frames, cultural memory, neo-Victorianism, and biofiction.

This book compares methodologies and technologies used in experimental laboratory and field research, as well as systems analysis, in a collaborative work of German and Chinese scientists. Both parties have access to exceptional experimental and modelling research capabilities. The Beishan underground research laboratory (URL) is currently under construction in Gansu, China. It will serve as an international collaboration platform for URL research in the future. International cooperation is essential for excellent research and development due to the high cost of scientific programmes and technical operation of URLs, making it a precondition for providing secure solutions. This is important not only for deep geological repositories for radioactive waste disposal but also for other geoenergy applications, such as energy storage and geothermal energy utilization.

Reconfiguring Drinking Cultures, Gender, and Transgressive Selves (Genders and Sexualities in the Social Sciences)

Using qualitative data elicited through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, the analysis engages with theories and concepts of culture, gender, and transgression to foreground the roles that socio-cultural and material elements and human agency play in shaping alcohol consumption in contemporary Nigeria. It also interrogates how and why multinational alcohol companies are targeting Nigerian women and youths and the extent to which their activities are contributing to changing gendered drinking and sexual practices, which are at odds with the extant local norms that promote abstinence, moderation among adults, and sexual purity among unmarried youths. Importantly, this book moves beyond solely Western theorizing by drawing on both Western and non-Western gender theories to analyze how contemporary Nigerian young men and women ‘do’ masculinity and femininity with alcohol and will be a valuable resource for social scientists, students, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public interested in youth drinking behaviours, multinational alcohol companies' activities, and decolonizing gender scholarship.
