Tomlinson Hill: The Remarkable Story of Two Families Who Share the Tomlinson Name—One White, One Black

by Chris Tomlinson

A New York Times Best Seller!Tomlinson Hill is the stunning story of two families—one white, one black—who trace their roots to a slave plantation that bears their name. Internationally recognized for his work as a fearless war correspondent, award-winning journalist Chris Tomlinson grew up hearing stories about his family's abandoned cotton plantation in Falls County, Texas. Most of the tales lionized his white ancestors for pioneering along the Brazos River. His grandfather often said the family's slaves loved them so much that they also took Tomlinson as their last name. LaDainian Tomlinson, football great and former running back for the San Diego Chargers, spent part of his childhood playing on the same land that his black ancestors had worked as slaves. As a child, LaDainian believed the Hill was named after his family. Not until he was old enough to read an historical plaque did he realize that the Hill was named for his ancestor's slaveholders.A masterpiece of authentic American history, Tomlinson Hill traces the true and very revealing story of these two families. From the beginning in 1854— when the first Tomlinson, a white woman, arrived—to 2007, when the last Tomlinson, LaDainian's father, left, the book unflinchingly explores the history of race and bigotry in Texas. Along the way it also manages to disclose a great many untruths that are latent in the unsettling and complex story of America.Tomlinson Hill is also the basis for a film and an interactive web project. The award-winning film, which airs on PBS, concentrates on present-day Marlin, Texas and how the community struggles with poverty and the legacy of race today, and is accompanied by an interactive web site called Voice of Marlin, which stores the oral histories collected along the way. Chris Tomlinson has used the reporting skills he honed as a highly respected reporter covering ethnic violence in Africa and the Middle East to fashion a perfect microcosm of America's own ethnic strife. The economic inequality, political shenanigans, cruelty and racism—both subtle and overt—that informs the history of Tomlinson Hill also live on in many ways to this very day in our country as a whole. The author has used his impressive credentials and honest humanity to create a classic work of American history that will take its place alongside the timeless work of our finest historians

A Democratic Approach to Religion News: Christianity and Islam in the British and Turkish Press

by Ahmed Topkev

This book introduces the first systematic and unified four-dimension democratic approach to newspaper religion reporting. It explores the coverage of faith, with a particular focus on Christianity and Islam, in the British and Turkish national press. The results of framing analysis, conducted through content analysis of 1,022 news articles, reveal that, in both countries, alongside the contrasting portrayals of the minority religions, even the dominant religions had a disproportioned employment of the four dimensions – spiritual, world life, political, and conflict. It contributes to scholarship not only empirically but also theoretically and methodologically, with its theoretical and methodological contribution surpassing its empirical findings. As such, it will transcend geographical and temporal boundaries, making it appealing and relevant to an international audience of academics, professionals, and students in the fields of journalism, religion, democracy, media, communication, society, and culture, as well as individuals from various backgrounds.

Wake of War: A Novel

by Zac Topping

In the future, the fate of America will be decided in a valley of death…The year is 2037, and chaos reigns. The U.S. government is in the hands of a borderline fascist who rules a country that is falling apart. Economic collapse looms, whole populations are fleeing their homes, and the armed forces are caught in a seemingly helpless war. Their foe—their own countrymen. The Revolutionist Front was borne of the government’s increasingly draconian actions. But the RF is equally extreme, run by a merciless megalomaniac determined to create his own version of America. Now, both armies find themselves in a stalemate in Salt Lake City, facing each other across a vital resource mine that could decide the outcome of the war.In this maelstrom, three fighters will experience the horrors of war from different directions: a young, green infantryman about to receive his baptism of fire; a ruthless rebel sniper out to make her enemies pay for what they took from her; and a hardened mercenary being paid to protect the mine. Each will be tested to the limits of their loyalties and personal honor. But none will emerge from the coming battle the same as when they walked into hell on earth…"WAKE OF WAR is packed with intense, realistic combat action set in an all-too-believable near future. Zac Topping has clearly been there and done that, and he delivers riveting combat scenes that explode off of the page." - Michael Mammay, author of The Misfit Soldier

Your Code as a Crime Scene, Second Edition

by Adam Tornhill

Jack the Ripper and legacy codebases have more in common than you'd think. Inspired by forensic psychology methods, you can apply strategies to identify problems in your existing code, assess refactoring direction, and understand how your team influences the software architecture. With its unique blend of criminal psychology and code analysis, Your Code as a Crime Scene arms you with the techniques you need to take on any codebase, no matter what programming language you use. Software development might well be the most challenging task humanity ever attempted. As systems scale up, they also become increasingly complex, expensive to maintain, and difficult to reason about. We can always write more tests, try to refactor, and even fire up a debugger to understand complex coding constructs. That's a great starting point, but you can do so much better. Take inspiration from forensic psychology techniques to understand and improve existing code. Visualize codebases via a geographic profile from commit data to find development hotspots, prioritize technical debt, and uncover hidden dependencies. Get data and develop strategies to make the business case for larger refactorings. Detect and fix organizational problems from the vantage point of the software architecture to remove bottlenecks for the teams. The original Your Code as a Crime Scene from 2014 pioneered techniques for understanding the intersection of people and code. This new edition reflects a decade of additional experience from hundreds of projects. Updated techniques, novel case studies, and extensive new material adds to the strengths of this cult classic. Change how you view software development and join the hunt for better code! What You Need: You need to be comfortable reading code. You also need to use Git (or Subversion, Mercurial or similar version-control tool).

Integrated Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT): A Practitioners Guide

by Maria Torres Win Turner Joseph Hyde R. Lyle Cooper

A practical approach to clinical interventions applicable to a range of mental health diagnoses Integrated Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) for Adults is a guide for practitioners looking for evidence-based clinical interventions that are portable across settings and diagnoses. Written in plain English and with an emphasis on step-by-step instructions, this valuable toolkit collects strategies and interventions that have been shown to be effective in substance use disorder, depression, anxiety, and beyond. This widely applicable treatment approach draws on motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy, mindfulness, functional analysis, and other methods that are strongly supported in the literature. With content reflecting emerging research findings and evolving social contexts, this book is both timely and firmly rooted in science. After presenting a set of proven techniques for motivational interviewing and CBT, this book details a 16-session course designed to fit within conventional models of therapeutic practice. Each session covers a cognitive behavioral skill (e.g., assertiveness, handling cravings, suicidality) and builds upon the previous sessions, but they also work as standalone interventions and do not have to be followed in a particular order. The book also offers additional tools to promote intervention quality and clinical supervision. Worksheets, handouts, and other materials are included in photocopiable format, making this a valuable guide in all outpatient mental health settings. Learn the fundamentals of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other evidence-based treatment modalities Get practical clinical tools, including step-by-step session guides on cognitive behavioral skills relevant to a range of diagnoses Access self-assessments, clinical supervision tools, and other resources to enhance clinical effectiveness Incorporate emerging research, changing social contexts, and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic into your practice Earlier editions of this guide focused on addressing substance use disorders and cooccurring disorders. This edition is applicable to those disorders but reflects that these clinical strategies are transdiagnostic.

Art Education as a Radical Act: Untold Histories of Education at MoMA (Routledge Research in Arts Education)

by Sara Torres-Vega Wendy Woon

This comprehensive volume highlights and centers untold histories of education at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) from 1937 to 2020, using the critical voices of artists, scholars, designers, and educators. Exploring these histories as transformative and paradigm-shifting in museum education, it elevates MoMA educators as vocal advocates for harnessing the educational power that museums inherently possess.Divided into three interlinked parts, the first sheds light on the early educational endeavors of the museum while analyzing the context of art education in the United States. The second part focuses on the tenures of Victor D’Amico and Betty Blayton, utilizing the MoMA archives as a primary resource. It includes essays by Ellen Winner, Luis Camnitzer, Susan E. Cahan, Michelle Millar Fisher, HECTOR (Jae Shin & Damon Rich), Gregory Sholette, Carol Duncan, Moreen Maser, Nana Adusei-Poku, Carmen Mörsch, Rika Burnham, Donna M. Jones, and José Ortiz. The third part presents the perspectives of William Burback, Philip Yenawine, Patterson Sims, Deborah F. Schwartz, and Wendy Woon as former MoMA Directors of Education in their own words and considers the forces that shaped their work. This timely and unique exploration ultimately aims to trace and understand the fundamental and evolving concerns of a seemingly underexamined profession constantly striving to maintain relevance in an environment marked by institutional, social, and political uncertainty. Exploring the radical acts undertaken to keep the museum true to its original promise, it delineates the paradox whereby education is both central and invisible to the identity of MoMA and museums more broadly and re-centers the conception of the museum as an educational institution. It is designed for scholars, researchers, and post-graduate students interested in arts education, visual literacy, museum studies, and communication studies.

Solving Optimization Problems with the Heuristic Kalman Algorithm: New Stochastic Methods (Springer Optimization and Its Applications #212)

by Rosario Toscano

This text focuses on simple and easy-to-use design strategies for solving complex engineering problems that arise in several fields of engineering design, namely non-convex optimization problems. The main optimization tool used in this book to tackle the problem of nonconvexity is the Heuristic Kalman Algorithm (HKA). The main characteristic of HKA is the use of a stochastic search mechanism to solve a given optimization problem. From a computational point of view, the use of a stochastic search procedure appears essential for dealing with non-convex problems. The topics discussed in this monograph include basic definitions and concepts from the classical optimization theory, the notion of the acceptable solution, machine learning, the concept of preventive maintenance, and more. The Heuristic Kalman Algorithm discussed in this book applies to many fields such as robust structured control, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, machine learning, reliability, and preference models. This large coverage of practical optimization problems makes this text very useful to those working on and researching systems design. The intended audience includes industrial engineers, postgraduates, and final-year undergraduates in various fields of systems design.

Dinners with Ruth: A Memoir on the Power of Friendships

by Nina Totenberg

Celebrated NPR correspondent Nina Totenberg delivers an extraordinary memoir of her personal successes, struggles, and life-affirming relationships, including her beautiful friendship of nearly fifty years with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth&’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated &“on the basis of sex&” to be unconstitutional. In a time when women were fired for becoming pregnant, often could not apply for credit cards, or get a mortgage in their own names, Ruth patiently explained her argument. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship. Dinners with Ruth is an extraordinary account of two women who paved the way for future generations by tearing down professional and legal barriers. It is also an intimate memoir of the power of friendships as women began to pry open career doors and transform the workplace. At the story&’s heart is one, special relationship: Ruth and Nina saw each other not only through personal joys, but also illness, loss, and widowhood. During the devastating illness and eventual death of Nina&’s first husband, Ruth drew her out of grief; twelve years later, Nina would reciprocate when Ruth&’s beloved husband died. They shared not only a love of opera, but also of shopping, as they instinctively understood that clothes were armor for women who wanted to be taken seriously in a workplace dominated by men. During Ruth&’s last year, they shared so many small dinners that Saturdays were &“reserved for Ruth&” in Nina&’s house. Dinners with Ruth also weaves together compelling, personal portraits of other fascinating women and men from Nina&’s life, including her cherished NPR colleagues Cokie Roberts and Linda Wertheimer; her beloved husbands; her friendships with multiple Supreme Court Justices, including Lewis Powell, William Brennan, and Antonin Scalia, and Nina&’s own family—her father, the legendary violinist Roman Totenberg, and her &“best friends,&” her sisters. Inspiring and revelatory, Dinners with Ruth is a moving story of the joy and true meaning of friendship.

Bounds of Blackness: African Americans, Sudan, and the Politics of Solidarity (The United States in the World)

by Christopher Tounsel

Bounds of Blackness explores the history of Black America's intellectual and cultural engagement with the modern state of Sudan. Ancient Sudan occupies a central place in the Black American imaginary as an exemplar of Black glory, pride, and civilization, while contemporary Sudan, often categorized as part of "Arab Africa" rather than "Black Africa," is often sidelined and overlooked. In this pathbreaking book, Christopher Tounsel unpacks the vacillating approaches of Black Americans to the Sudanese state and its multiethnic populace through periods defined by colonialism, postcolonial civil wars, genocide in Darfur, and South Sudanese independence. By exploring the work of African American intellectuals, diplomats, organizations, and media outlets, Tounsel shows how this transnational relationship reflects the robust yet capricious terms of racial consciousness in the African Diaspora.

Anglican Confirmation 1820-1945: From ‘Renewing the Baptismal Covenant’ to ‘The Sacramental Principle’ (Routledge New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology and Biblical Studies)

by Phillip Tovey

This book focuses on Anglican Confirmation in theology, liturgy, and practice from 1820 to 1945. This was a period of great change in the ways Anglicans approached Confirmation. The Tractarian movement transformed the Communion, and its ideas were carried overseas with the missionary movement. The study examines the development of a two-stage theology and its reception. It analyses the wave of liturgical revision expressed in England in the 1928 Prayer Book. It explores the episcopal changes in practice from the eighteenth-century paradigm to a new way of confirming. The revolution of the time has left a legacy that still informs practice, while doubts about theology and its liturgical application have left an existential crisis. The author reflects on how the current situation in various provinces has its roots in this period and the diffusion of ideas in the Communion. The book offers a fresh systematic examination of the neglected ecclesial practice of Confirmation, providing a more holistic view and clarifying developments to help us better understand the present. It will be of particular interest to scholars of Christian theology, liturgy, ecclesiology, and church history.
