The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea: A System of Regulation (Globalization: Law and Policy)

by Kristina Siig Birgit Feldtmann Fenella M.W. Billing

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) has for four decades been considered by many to be one of the most important legislative achievements of international law. It is revered as a "constitution of the oceans", providing the legal framework for the governance of the oceans. This volume explores how the UNCLOS is functioning in various complex settings, how it adapts to new, emerging developments, as well as how it interacts with other regulation, both within the law of the sea regime and outside. Engaging in themes such as law and order at sea, UNCLOS’ interaction with human rights and the role of private actors, the book raises complex questions in the application, understanding, and enforcement of the convention and how it can be envisaged, interpreted, and used in a dynamic world. The volume also raises methodological questions, the answers to which may enhance the predictability and coherence of the law under UNCLOS and thus secure its role as the predominant and relevant system for legal governance at sea for many decades to come.As a contribution to ensuring the future relevance of UNCLOS, the book will be a valuable resource for scholars, diplomats, judges and other practitioners who are working with and interpreting the law of the sea and related issues of maritime law, migration law, human rights law and humanitarian law.

Advanced Chemical and Creep Modeling for Alkali-Aggregate Reaction in Concrete (Building Pathology and Rehabilitation #28)

by Fernando A. Silva Rodrigo F. Roma Mohamed K. Bourbatache Mahfoud Tahlaiti João M. Delgado António C. Azevedo

This book presents the numerical results of the use of the chemical model to analyse the advancement of the reaction and the mechanical model to simulate creep and shrinkage phenomena in COMSOL Multiphysics®, as a way to reassess concrete structures suffering from those mechanisms. Both models were implemented separately to evaluate their responses and compare them with the theoretical results and experimental benchmarks presented in the literature. The numerical simulation results showed excellent agreement with the experimental results data, with maximum disagreement not exceeding 10%, indicating that the implementation of the developed numerical models behaved very efficiently.

Spatial Interaction Models with Land Use: A Tool for Interdisciplinary Analysis and Integrated Territorial Policy (Contributions to Regional Science)

Engineering of Human Tissues and Implants: An Evolutionary Approach to Implant Design

by Frederick H. Silver

This text presents information on biological control systems, mechanotransduction, tissue structure, and function, as well as properties that can be integrated together to provide improved implant and device designs. This information is needed to develop new diagnostic tests and instruments that provide early diagnostic tests and treatments for diseases.Engineering of Human Tissues and Implants: An Evolutionary Approach to Implant Design provides basic scientific information on the evolutionary design of tissues and organs that are a result of living in a gravitational field. Much of the useful information that is available for the design of implants is based on tissue structure and function derived from light and electron microscopy observations. However, this information is not enough for developing new designs of implants and medical devices since much of the biological response to implants is based on understanding the biological control systems and mechanotransduction that drive many of the responses seen with implanted devices. The book also introduces mechanotransduction as it relates to implant design with an overview of materials and their use in applications that include those materials designed to treat wounds, burns, facial, hernial, ophthalmic, oral, cardiovascular, and tendon/ligaments.This book is intended for biomedical science and engineering students who are learning about artificial implants and medical device development. It will also be of significance to other engineering majors interested in the design of devices for diagnoses and measuring of physiological parameters, as well as to clinicians and researchers who are interested in mechanobiology.

What's My Motivation?

by Michael Simkins

As a boy, Michael Simkins always wanted to be someone. While his friends were out getting laid and stoned, he was tucked up at home dreaming of his name in lights, of holding an audience rapt, of perhaps becoming a TV heart-throb, or having someone, anyone, ask for his autograph in the supermarket. This is the true story of an obsessive pursuit of acting fame. It is a life marked by occasional hard-fought successes and routine helpings of ritual humiliation: scout hut Gilbert and Sullivan, dodgy rock operas, sewage farm theatre workshop, Christmas panto hell, straight-to-video film flops, leading roles in Crimewatch reconstructions and dressing up as a chicken to advertise TV dinners. It is a hilarious tale of turgid theatre, tights, trusses and tonsil tennis with Timothy Spall.

It challenges the prevailing belief that cloud seeding laws are irrelevant to regional SRM governance and argues for their applicability. Through case studies in Australia, Canada, and the United States, the book highlights the need for legal frameworks that promote cross-scale interactions, stakeholder participation, flexible decision-making, and conflict resolution. It advocates for adopting adaptive governance principles to effectively manage the risks and uncertainties associated with regional SRM interventions. By filling a gap in the existing literature, this book offers valuable insights and recommendations for the governance of regional SRM, shedding light on the potential of cloud seeding laws to inform and shape SRM governance frameworks. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the legal and normative aspects, offering practical guidance for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders involved in regional SRM initiatives.

Jewish Religious Conflicts (Routledge Revivals)

This book will be of interest to students of religion and history.
