Most prominent is her strong emotional bond with Bint Aamir, a woman she always thought of as her grandmother, who passed away just after Zuhour left the Arabian Peninsula. As the historical narrative of Bint Aamir&’s challenged circumstances unfurls in captivating fragments, so too does Zuhour&’s isolated and unfulfilled present, one narrative segueing into another as time slips, and dreams mingle with memories. The Cardinals Way: How One Team Embraced Tradition and Moneyball at the Same Time

by Howard Megdal

The Cardinals Way presents an inside look at the St. Louis Cardinals, a team that has emerged as the model organization in the MLB through developing young talent and embracing analytics. The St. Louis Cardinals have experienced the kind of success that is rare in baseball. Regarded by many as the premier organization in Major League Baseball, they not only win, but do so with an apparently bottomless pool of talent, one that is mostly homegrown.Despite years of phenomenal achievements, including going to the World Series in 2004 and again in 2006, the Cardinals reinvented themselves using the "Cardinal Way," a term that has come to represent many things to fans, media, and other organizations, from an ironclad code of conduct to the team's cutting-edge use of statistic and analytics, and a farm system that has transformed baseball.Baseball journalist Howard Megdal takes fans behind the scenes and off the field, interviewing dozens of key players within the Cardinals organization, including owner Bill DeWitt and the former general manager John Mozeliak. Megdal reveals how the players are assessed and groomed using an unrivaled player development system that has created a franchise that is the envy of the baseball world. In the spirit of Moneyball, The Cardinals Way tells an in-depth, fascinating story about a consistently good franchise, the business of sports in the twenty-first century and a team that has learned how to level the playing field, turning in season after successful season.

The Case for Auschwitz: Evidence from the Irving Trial

by Robert Jan van Pelt

From January to April 2000 historian David Irving brought a high-profile libel case against Penguin Books and Deborah Lipstadt in the British High Court, charging that Lipstadt's book, Denying the Holocaust (1993), falsely labeled him a Holocaust denier. The question about the evidence for Auschwitz as a death camp played a central role in these proceedings. Irving had based his alleged denial of the Holocaust in part on a 1988 report by an American execution specialist, Fred Leuchter, which claimed that there was no evidence for homicidal gas chambers in Auschwitz. In connection with their defense, Penguin and Lipstadt engaged architectural historian Robert Jan van Pelt to present evidence for our knowledge that Auschwitz had been an extermination camp where up to one million Jews were killed, mainly in gas chambers. Employing painstaking historical scholarship, van Pelt prepared and submitted an exhaustive forensic report that he successfully defended in cross-examination in court.

In “After Yang,” the robotic brother of an adopted Chinese child malfunctions, and only in his absence does the family realize how real a son he has become.Children of the New World grapples with our unease in this modern world and how our ever-growing dependence on new technologies has changed the shape of our society. Common Ground: Encounters with Nature at the Edges of Life

by Rob Cowen

All too often, we think of nature as something distinct from ourselves, something to go and see, a place that’s separate from the ordinary modern world in which we live and work. But if we take the time to look, we soon find that’s not how nature works. Even in our parceled-out, paved-over urban environs, nature is all around us; it is in us. It is us. That’s what Rob Cowen discovered after moving to a new home in northern England. After ten years in London he was suddenly adrift, searching for a sense of connection. He found himself drawn to a square-mile patch of waste ground at the edge of town. Scrappy, weed-filled, this heart-shaped tangle of land was the very definition of overlooked—a thoroughly in-between place that capitalism no longer had any use for, leaving nature to take its course. Wandering its meadows, woods, hedges, and fields, Cowen found it was also a magical, mysterious place, haunted and haunting, abandoned but wildly alive—and he fell in fascinated love. Common Ground is a true account of that place and Cowen’s transformative journey through its layers and lives, but it’s much more too. As the land’s stories intertwine with events in his own life—and he learns he is to become a father for the first time—the divisions between human and nature begin to blur and shift. The place turns out to be a mirror, revealing what we are, what we’re not and how those two things are ultimately inseparable. This is a book about discovering a new world, a forgotten world on the fringes of our daily lives, and the richness that comes from uncovering the stories and lives—animal and human—contained within. It is an unforgettable piece of nature writing, part of a brilliant tradition that stretches from Gilbert White to Robert Macfarlane and Helen Macdonald. “I am dreaming of the edge-land again,” Cowen writes. Read Common Ground, and you, too, will be dreaming of the spaces in between, and what—including us—thrives there.

Counseling in Communication Disorders: Facilitating the Therapeutic Relationship

by Cyndi Stein-Rubin Beryl Adler

Incorporating a counseling paradigm has been shown to increase motivation, deepen learning, and sustain progress for clients and families. Counseling in Communication Disorders: Facilitating the Therapeutic Relationship by Cyndi Stein-Rubin and Beryl T. Adler, is an engaging textbook, written in a genuine and lively tone, so that the reader may easily relate to the material. The text provides a practical vehicle for speech-language pathology students, clinicians, clinical supervisors, and instructors to get to know themselves better and to integrate basic counseling attitudes and tools into their diagnostic and therapeutic programs. Inside Counseling in Communication Disorders, Stein-Rubin and Adler describe the importance of addressing a client’s communication challenges by working with the whole person, as a human being, not as a communication disorder. By approaching clients with a counseling attitude that encourages the client’s full participation in the treatment process, we then work together in partnership and as a powerful team. The content, techniques, and exercises within Counseling in Communication Disorders are rooted in evidence-based practice from a variety of psychological, counseling, and coaching approaches, such as Humanistic Counseling, Listening and Language, Narrative Therapy, The Cognitive Behavioral Model (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Positive Psychology, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), and Mindfulness training.Counseling in Communication Disorders also includes reflective questions, exercises, and suggestions to reinforce important concepts. To bring the content to life, real-life and clinical scenarios are interspersed throughout the text.It is well understood that speech-language pathology and audiology clinicians must understand deep listening and how to choose words that will have a positive impact on their client and families, but often overlooked is the personal development of the clinicians themselves. Counseling in Communication Disorders is a comprehensive guide on how to provide the necessary support and encouragement to clients and build self-esteem, while a major focus is the need for the clinicians to work on self before working on other. Counseling in Communication Disorders: Facilitating the Therapeutic Relationship is the first textbook of its kind to comprehensively cover both sides of the therapeutic relationship. Students and clinicians alike will appreciate this unique approach that addresses not only the counseling attitude that is vital to the growth and progress of clients, but also the self-awareness that guides the personal development of the clinician.Included with the text are online supplemental materials for faculty use in the classroom.
