Procreative Rights in International Law: Insights from the European Court of Human Rights

by null Carmen Draghici

Draghici contends that the advent of assisted reproductive technologies has given rise to new fundamental, albeit not unqualified, rights. They include the right to use medically assisted procreation (e.g. artificial insemination, in vitro fertilisation, potentially gamete donation, posthumous conception or surrogacy) in order to become a parent (typically where natural procreation is hindered by infertility, sexual orientation, relationship status or adverse life events), the recognition of intention-based parenthood in relation to donor-conceived children jointly planned and raised with the genetic parent, and the right to pursue the conception of a healthy child (e.g. through recourse to preimplantation genetic diagnosis and embryo selection to avoid severe illness in future offspring). To substantiate this claim, the book relies on a comprehensive analysis of international case-law on procreative autonomy, contextualised by a discussion of highly divisive bioethical controversies, from the status of embryos to the morality of genetic screening and third-party reproduction.

Prodigal: New and Selected Poems, 1976–2014

Production Control in Practice Practice-oriented coverage of production planning and control processes for goods and services, written for any industry Production Control in Practice explores the operational control of production and inventory processes in organizations across industries, covering both tangible and intangible products and offering viable, efficient solutions to characteristic production control problems, such as what goods to produce when and how. A number of examples/stylized applications are included to help readers understand and apply the discussed concepts and theories to their own organizations. This book distinguishes between the control of production units and the control of goods flow between these units and the market and discusses various coordination and material supply control mechanisms relevant to supply chains. It also presents a typology of production situations found in practice, using a structured approach to discussing the relevant control decisions for each situation. This book is unique because (basic) control decisions are discussed for the different characteristic Decoupling Point Control and Production Unit Control situations from a holistic point of view, taking into account both mathematical considerations as well as various situational factors. Sample topics covered in Production Control in Practice include: Terminology and concepts used in production control, including complexity, uncertainty, and flexibilityTypes of release triggers, covering just-in-time versus just-in-case and push versus pull in logisticsHorizontal and vertical decomposition, and time series-related forecasting for stationary demand versus demand with trendOrder size, covering optimal batch size in case of fixed order size, relaxation of assumptions, and single period considerationsMRP systems, covering Material Requirements Planning (MRP-I) and Manufacturing Resource Planning Systems (MRP-II) With excellent coverage of the subject across different products and industries and several examples to help readers follow along, Production Control in Practice is an ideal reference for bachelor students from universities of applied sciences and academic bachelor students, as well as practitioners in related disciplines.

Produktentwicklungsprojekte - Aufbau, Ablauf und Organisation

Professing Darkness: Cormac McCarthy's Catholic Critique of American Enlightenment

by D. Marcel DeCoste

Professing Darkness confirms the centrality of Catholic thought, imagery, and sacrament to the spiritual and ethical outlook of the work of Cormac McCarthy and, more specifically, its consistent assessment of Enlightenment values and their often-catastrophic realization in American history. D. Marcel DeCoste surveys McCarthy’s fiction from both his Tennessee and Southwest periods, with chapters devoted to eight of his published novels—from Outer Dark to The Road—and a conclusion that examines the writer’s screenplay for The Counselor and the duology of The Passenger and Stella Maris. DeCoste’s attentive, wide-ranging interpretations demonstrate that McCarthy’s work mounts a sustained critique of core Enlightenment ideals and their devastating results in the American context, especially for Indigenous peoples, the environment, the viability of community, and the integrity of a self irreducible to the status of a commodity. Professing Darkness shows that Roman Catholic understandings of Penance and Eucharist, along with specific Catholic teachings—such as those regarding the goodness of Creation, the nature of evil, the insufficiency of the self, and the radical invitation to conversion—enable McCarthy’s revelatory engagement with American Enlightenment. An important contribution to the ever-expanding critical literature on a towering contemporary author, Professing Darkness offers an innovative reading of both the spiritual and political valences of McCarthy’s writing.

Professional Issues in Therapeutic Recreation: On Competencies and Outcomes

by Norma J. Stumbo Brent D. Wolfe Shane Pegg

The latest edition of Professional Issues in Therapeutic Recreation On Competence and Outcomes recognizes that the profession must continue to challenge the status quo and one another. Issues and ideas are not stagnant; they are forever changing, and the various sections and chapters of this edition will challenge the reader to conceptualize ideas from new perspectives and in a new light. Readers are encouraged to wrestle with the ideas presented. Do not simply read them and file the information away. Interact with the ideas. Discuss the ideas. Argue about the ideas. Whatever you do, do not simply disregard an idea because it represents a viewpoint or perspective that is different from your personal philosophy related to the profession. We challenge all readers to be drawn into the variety of topics, concepts, and perspectives presented in this volume so each can continue to personally grow and enable the profession to continue to grow. Like the first two editions, this effort has four major sections: Introduction, Education, Practice, and Research. It is clear that these divisions are largely arbitrary, as every practice issue affects every research issue, every education issue affects every practice issue, and on and on. However, books require an organizational layout, and these divisions appear to make sense. Each section begins with a Keynote chapter aimed at setting the stage for that particular section. Each section also ends with a Perspective chapter, largely an opinion or viewpoint piece to encourage readers to continue discussion on related issues.
