National Power and International Geostructure (Contributions to International Relations)

Second, states play a fundamental role in the international system, which is why the study of their roles in the world cannot be limited to old, insufficient, and contradictory categorizations. Having new categories of states becomes an even more urgent task in the rapidly changing international order than it is today. This book proposes nine categories of powers and states that cover all the countries that currently exist. Third, the international geostructure of world power is proposed, which represents a new theoretical notion that helps to explain how the international insertion of states and their possibilities of action are conditioned by the unequal distribution of national power and by their structural positioning in the international system. Au-delà du profit, les entreprises soucieuses des personnes et de la planète offrent des rendements plus stables et durables. Il doit y avoir un autre modèle de croissance économique qui dissocie la croissance du PIB de l’augmentation des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES). Je postule dans ce livre que si les modèles de développement passés ont permis une croissance grâce à la pollution industrielle, les pays en développement n’ont pas besoin de suivre cette voie. L’industrie verte, qu’elle soit axée sur l’efficacité des ressources, la réduction de la pollution ou la vulnérabilité flagrante à la destruction des moyens de subsistance et des infrastructures induite par l’inaction climatique, montre une plus grande viabilité économique comme voie à suivre. Face au défi de concilier développement et objectifs écologiques, certains ont souvent soutenu que l’industrialisation était une opportunité pour les pays les moins avancés, à qui c’était désormais à leur tour de polluer l’environnement, tout comme les pays développés l’ont fait pendant de nombreuses décennies. D’autres pays ont également fait valoir qu’ils ont encore de quoi polluer, contrairement aux États développés qui sont apparemment surpeuplés et dont l’écosystème est au point de rupture. L’ironie que je vois est que les États développés qui cherchent de plus en plus à dissocier la croissance du PIB de l’augmentation des émissions de GES sont également les mieux préparés à résister aux événements climatiques extrêmes. On the Other Hand: Canadian Multiculturalism and Its Progressive Critics
by Phil RyanFor many, Canadian multiculturalism represents the hope that we can build a society in which people who have come from all corners of the world can fully participate without first subverting or erasing their unique identities. Many progressive critics, however, dismiss this hope as an illusion that serves to mask ongoing racism and inequality. Foregrounding the capitalist nature of the Canadian state and society, On the Other Hand examines the arguments of a range of progressive critics of Canadian multiculturalism. An exercise in “critical listening,” the book aims to both communicate and assess these progressive critiques. It proposes conditions for the intelligibility of social science analysis in general and reflects on the requirements for effective progressive thought and writing. Grounded in a political economy approach, the book argues that capitalism and the capitalist nature of the state must be integrated into our analysis of multiculturalism, immigration policy, and persistent racism. On the Other Hand reveals how progressive critiques can identify real limits of multiculturalism: limits of which we must be aware if we are either to endorse them or seek to transcend them.
