Strange Likeness: Description and the Modernist Novel (Thinking Literature)
by Dora ZhangThe modern novel, so the story goes, thinks poorly of mere description—what Virginia Woolf called “that ugly, that clumsy, that incongruous tool.” As a result, critics have largely neglected description as a feature of novelistic innovation during the twentieth century. Dora Zhang argues that descriptive practices were in fact a crucial site of attention and experimentation for a number of early modernist writers, centrally Woolf, Henry James, and Marcel Proust. Description is the novelistic technique charged with establishing a common world, but in the early twentieth century, there was little agreement about how a common world could be known and represented. Zhang argues that the protagonists in her study responded by shifting description away from visualizing objects to revealing relations—social, formal, and experiential—between disparate phenomena. In addition to shedding new light on some of the best-known works of modernism, Zhang opens up new ways of thinking about description more broadly. She moves us beyond the classic binary of narrate-or-describe and reinvigorates our thinking about the novel. Die Wahrnehmung der südafrikanischen Eliten gegenüber China
by Mengshu ZhanIn den vergangenen 20 Jahren mit den intensiven chinesischen Aktivitäten auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent sind die Beziehungen zwischen China und Afrika zu einem wichtigen Forschungsgegenstand in der internationalen Politikwissenschaft geworden. Der Großteil dieser Abhandlungen analysiert das Thema aus der Perspektive Chinas, dagegen sind kaum systematische Untersuchungen aus dem Blickwinkel der Afrikaner zu finden. In diesem Buch werden die Wahrnehmungen der südafrikanischen Eliten in Bezug auf China in den Jahren von 2006 bis 2016 systematisch untersucht. Die Wahrnehmungen konzentrierten sich dabei auf Chinas Auswirkungen auf Südafrika bezogen auf vier Aspekte: Chinas wirtschaftliche Aktivitäten, die chinesische globale politische Strategie, das chinesische Entwicklungsmodell sowie Chinas Soft Power. Es kommen die Konstruktivismus-Theorie von Alexander Wendt als Forschungstheorie und die Diskursanalyse von Jürgen Habermas als Forschungsmethode zur Anwendung. Although knowledge on monitoring is imparted in basic courses offered by a few professional societies, systematic training of medical and non-medical staff according to a standardized curriculum is still lacking.This book aims to contribute to closing this gap. It provides a practical guide to help medical, nursing, and technical personnel get familiar with intraoperative neuromonitoring. The basic tenor is to combine theoretical and practical knowledge and thus to systematically convey essential skills about fundamentals, possibilities, but also limitations of IONM to a broad circle of readers. In order to achieve this goal, the text has been reduced to the absolutely necessary length in favor of numerous illustrations and tables.After an introduction to the tasks, the significance, and the historical development of IONM, the anatomical, physiological and physical basics are presented. Regarding all these phenomena, the aesthetics of law ultimately allows us to see the law more clearly and more profoundly. What is more, the law does not function, nor has it ever functioned, separately from its means of expression, which are incontrovertibly subject to aesthetic interpretation. If we think about law in this way, perceiving not only the message, but also the manner in which it is conveyed, the whole set of means and tools used, the perfection and beauty of the form, then we will see art in it. After all, the widely known and still applicable ancient maxim ius est ars boni et aequi equates law and art. This alone should be an argument for aesthetic reflection on the law, a field of endeavour that should never have been abandoned. The book’s twenty-three chapters, written by scholars from various countries and three continents, are thematically diverse. In them we present the manifestations of the aesthetics of law from an external perspective. If we accept a definition of the concept of law that is as broad as possible, not only as a synonym of a certain formalized normative system, but also including the process of its creation (legislation), its application and interpretation (jurisprudence), and even teaching on and research into it (doctrine), we can identify a wealth of aesthetic references in the law. A broadly understood aesthetics of law, approached solely from an external perspective, covers such disciplines as law and literature, the aesthetics of legal rhetoric, the trial as performance, the aesthetics ofcourthouse architecture, law in the fine arts, law in film, law and music, pictorial law, symbols of the law and legal symbols, symbols of the state and power, legal archaeology etc. The field of research is, therefore, wide. In addition to topics traditionally and obviously associated with the aesthetics of law, such as law and literature, law in the fine arts, and court rhetoric, there are chapters on e.g. legal ethics and trademarks. All authors share the belief that beauty in law is important, even when it is hidden in a caricature. Further, they argue for restoring the aesthetics of law to its proper place in philosophical and legal discourse, as doing so would yield a host of benefits for the addressees of law.
