Reconfiguring Drinking Cultures, Gender, and Transgressive Selves (Genders and Sexualities in the Social Sciences)

by Emeka W. Dumbili

This book presents an in-depth analysis of young people’s experiences of diverse drinking practices, including heavy drinking and drunkenness, as fun and pleasurable as they navigate gendered leisure spaces. Using qualitative data elicited through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions, the analysis engages with theories and concepts of culture, gender, and transgression to foreground the roles that socio-cultural and material elements and human agency play in shaping alcohol consumption in contemporary Nigeria. It focuses on the enactment of hyper-heterosexual and alternative masculinities and the reconfigurations of passive and non-passive femininities through drinking practices. It also interrogates how and why multinational alcohol companies are targeting Nigerian women and youths and the extent to which their activities are contributing to changing gendered drinking and sexual practices, which are at odds with the extant local norms that promote abstinence, moderation among adults, and sexual purity among unmarried youths. Importantly, this book moves beyond solely Western theorizing by drawing on both Western and non-Western gender theories to analyze how contemporary Nigerian young men and women ‘do’ masculinity and femininity with alcohol and will be a valuable resource for social scientists, students, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public interested in youth drinking behaviours, multinational alcohol companies' activities, and decolonizing gender scholarship.

Cooperative Control of Multi-agent Systems: A Hybrid System Approach

by Guanglei Zhao Hailong Cui Changchun Hua Shuang Liu

This book focuses on stability analysis and control design approaches for multi-agent systems under network-induced constraints. A hybrid system approach is introduced to address the cooperative control problem of networked multi-agent systems, and several important topics such as asynchronous sampled data cooperative control, hybrid event-triggered cooperative control, and reset-based cooperative control are studied under the hybrid system framework. The special feature of this book is that a hybrid systems approach is proposed for the cooperative control of multi-agent systems, which is beneficial for relaxing the conservativeness of stability analysis and network parameter computation. Interested readers can learn a novel approach to cooperative control of multi-agent systems, and this book can benefit researchers, engineers, and graduate students in the fields of multi-robot cooperation, unmanned aerial vehicle formation, control engineering, etc.

Gifts to the Sad Country: Essays on the Chinese Diaspora

by Souchou Yao

This book is a study of an ethnic-Chinese family in Malaysia as it struggled with the upheavals in China during the Land Reform (1945-1953) and the Great Leap Forward (1958-1962). Based on fieldwork in Malaysia and in a village in Dabu County, Southern China, it tells a story of a family whose existence straddled two nations, two political systems. Emigration is shown to be both a positive experience and a source of despair. The study redefines the conventional narrative about the Chinese diaspora as economically driven and politically expedient; mobility, personal freedom and transnational journeying were a part of their cultural history. The book highlights the fact that Chinese homeland, even under communist rule, offered the people a means of identification under difficult circumstances. During the time of radical reform, the diaspora adapted themselves to the conditions in the homeland, and for some China remained a place of longing and emotional attachment.

Mathematics for Natural Scientists II: Advanced Methods (Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Physics)

by Lev Kantorovich

This textbook, the second in a series (the first covered fundamentals and basics), seeks to make its material accessible to physics students. Physics/engineering can be greatly enhanced by knowledge of advanced mathematical techniques, but the math-specific jargon and laborious proofs can be off-putting to students not well versed in abstract math. This book uses examples and proofs designed to be clear and convincing from the context of physics, as well as providing a large number of both solved and unsolved problems in each chapter. This is the second edition, and it has been significantly revised and enlarged, with Chapters 1 (on linear algebra) and 2 (on the calculus of complex numbers and functions) having been particularly expanded. The enhanced topics throughout the book include: vector spaces, general (non-Hermitian, including normal and defective) matrices and their right/left eigenvectors/values, Jordan form, pseudoinverse, linearsystems of differential equations, Gaussian elimination, fundamental theorem of algebra, convergence of a Fourie series and Gibbs-Wilbraham phenomenon, careful derivation of the Fourier integral and of the inverse Laplace transform. New material has been added on many physics topics meant to illustrate the maths, such as 3D rotation, properties of the free electron gas, van Hove singularities, and methods for both solving PDEs with a Fourier transform and calculating the width of a domain wall in a ferromagnet, to mention just a few. This textbook should prove invaluable to all of those with an interest in physics/engineering who have previously experienced difficulty processing the math involved.

Digital Food Provisioning in Times of Multiple Crises: How Social and Technological Innovations Shape Everyday Consumption Practices (Consumption and Public Life)

by Arne Dulsrud Francesca Forno

This edited collection brings together theoretical and empirical reflections on the role played by new technology and digital platforms in the provision of food. The way food is produced, distributed, consumed and disposed has significant consequences for the environment, affecting soil fertility, water and air quality, the state of the climate and the loss of biodiversity. Such negative effects are strictly related to the agro-industrial system of production and consumption, based on logic of low prices, high availability and high waste. This collection brings together a carefully curated range of insights from a team of twenty researchers coming from different fields working in different European universities engaged in the same project for more than three years. As a result, this book will appeal to people working on food studies and on sustainable food production and consumption, offering both conceptual-theoretical insights into contemporary food issues alongside empirical illustrations.

The Steady Navier-Stokes System: Basics of the Theory and the Leray Problem (Advances in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics)

by Mikhail Korobkov Konstantin Pileckas Remigio Russo

This book provides a successful solution to one of the central problems of mathematical fluid mechanics: the Leray’s problem on existence of a solution to the boundary value problem for the stationary Navier—Stokes system in bounded domains under sole condition of zero total flux. This marks the culmination of the authors' work over the past few years on this under-explored topic within the study of the Navier—Stokes equations. This book will be the first major work on the Navier—Stokes equations to explore Leray’s problem in detail. The results are presented with detailed proofs, as are the history of the problem and the previous approaches to finding a solution to it. In addition, for the reader’s convenience and for the self-sufficiency of the text, the foundations of the mathematical theory for incompressible fluid flows described by the steady state Stokes and Navier—Stokes systems are presented. For researchers in this active area, this book will be a valuable resource.

Photovoltaic Pumping Systems for Domestic Sustainable Water Access in Off-Grid Areas (Green Energy and Technology)

by Judith Alazraque Cherni Simon Meunier Loïc Quéval

This book offers practical guidance for practitioner engineers, policymakers, and other decision-makers on how to implement solar photovoltaic water pumping systems to provide domestic clean water in off-grid regions of developing countries. By championing genuine multidisciplinary research and generating interdisciplinary results, this book develops models and approaches which indicate how it might be possible to overcome some of the limitations that technocratic approaches to renewable energy and water access pose to truly sustainable development. The book addresses technical challenges often found when promoting photovoltaic water pumping systems. It offers practical guidance to stakeholders on how to successfully select, install, and maintain photovoltaic water pumps to promote sustainable options for the poorest underserved areas/populations. A main novelty of this book is that, by using theoretical, as well as real/actual field-work data, and advanced modelling, it successfully connects energy systems engineering, environmental and geographical information and hydrology with population surveys which reveal local needs and conditions. The book is timely and important. More than 665 700 million worldwide still do not have access to improved drinking water sources; eight out of ten live in rural areas typically located either in off-grid territory, or where connection to nearby grid is too expensive or unfeasible. Unsafe water is responsible for 1.2 million deaths each year, mainly correlated with the diarrheal diseases generated from drinking water from unimproved water sources. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) may be achieved only if water is accessible to everyone, available when needed and free from contamination.

by Liyu Han

This book focuses on the real themes in various areas of international economic law and explores the key elements behind the written rules. The advantage of this approach is that these themes or elements apply to all types of countries, whether developed or developing, whether market-based or not, and to trade, investment, or other transactions. This book reflects the author's thoughts and views on international economic law and its application based on his experience advising government departments and entities, particularly insights into the U.S.-China trade war from the perspective of a Chinese scholar. This feature makes the book very different from other books published before the U.S.-China trade war or textbooks that simply introduce the relevant subjects and provokes readers to think deeply about the relevant issues.

Money and Inflation: A New Approach to Monetary Analysis for the 21st Century

by Mehdi Chowdhury

The book goes beyond the usual understanding of money—physically, electronically or virtually expressed in term of monetary units like dollars, pounds, gold coins, or bitcoins—and discusses how money is best conceptualised as the ability of a person/party to obtain goods and services from another person/party. This ability may originate from the access of a person/party to money in usual sense (e.g. dollars, pounds) but also via force, social norms, mutual negotiation, altruism, trust or due to human biological characteristics. As the ability to obtain goods and services from others depends on the context — what functions as money in a time and place may not function as money in another time and place — as such money has no universal type or representation. The book explains inflation as the increased need to acquire money, that is the need to employ more physical and mental labour to create the ability to obtaina wide range of goods and services. This book provides an explanation of the post covid price hike and the cost of living crisis by taking this new theory into consideration, which will be of interest to academics, researchers, policy makers and students studying finance, monetary economics and inflation.

The Impact of Management Control Systems on Employees’ Behavior During Remote Work (Controlling und Rechnungslegung - Managerial and Financial Accounting)

by Lena Heinz-Schmitt

The new trend towards flexible work environments has spurred the debate over the effects of remote work on employees’ behavior and has forced greater consideration of how management control systems must be adjusted to meet the needs of the new work environment. While the existing literature has observed several positive behavioral changes, such as increased performance and effort, counterproductive work behavior has also been identified. Combining an experimental and a case study research approach, the present study investigates whether a management control system can mitigate unwanted behavior during remote work. The experimental study manipulates the use of management controls and analyzes the effects of an enabling vs. a coercive management control system on dishonest behavior. The data reveal that individuals who perceive the system as enabling and feel a connection to the company behave more honestly during remote work. The organizational connection entirely mediates the perception of the management control system on dishonest behavior. To further investigate this effect, a case study approach was applied. Based on interviews, several factors are identified that might impact the enabling perception of the control system in remote work settings. The six factors are divided into situational and individual attributes.
