La informalización del discurso digital público: Reflexiones sobre el inglés y el español (Routledge Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics)

by Carmen Pérez-Sabater

La informalización del discurso digital público is an innovative volume which examines different communicative practices which take place on social media and justifies the shift towards more informal/oral styles of public communication in English and Spanish. The book takes a first step in understanding and analysing how the use of code-switching, language preference, and graphicons contribute to the public image of institutions, politicians and celebrities, as well as how the aforementioned strategies fit into the negotiation of the norms and identities of public communities on social media platforms. Offering an updated approach to studying digital discourse in public contexts, it is the first of its kind written in Spanish. The volume focuses on the characteristic linguistic features associated with digital communication and informal oral writing styles, such as reduplication of vowels, consonants, acronyms, and shortenings, code-switching and language preference, and the insertion of multimodal and graphical elements.A comprehensive and unique volume, La informalización del discurso digital público is ideal for researchers and postgraduate students interested in digital discourse, sociolinguistics, and media studies. The Inflection Election: Democracy or Fascism in 2024?

by Mark Green

Rep. JAMIE RASKIN (D-MD): &“This fine book is an essential primer about the stakes in &’24. We owe Mark a debt of gratitude.&”LAURENCE TRIBE: &“Written with searing clarity and biting humor.&” The Inflection Election: Democracy or Fascism in 2024? aims to warn busy and credulous Americans that this November will be a choice between a Party of Progress and a Party of Dangerous Extremism that may determine the path for American governance for generations. This is not a &“both-sides&” analysis by a journalistic spectator, but is instead a blunt &“one-sided&” guide by an experienced partisan—a public interest lawyer, elected Democrat, and prolific author. Mark Green makes the case for Democracy and Freedom and against Trump&’s blatant Caesarism and MAGA&’s fringeworthy agenda. While neither side has a prohibitive advantage as of mid-2024, the stakes are no mystery. If the GOP should now win both the White House and Congress—with a reactionary Supreme Court already in its column—a numerical minority of Americans would then enjoy a temporary governing majority that could cancel a century of progress and make the world&’s oldest democracy no longer democratic. There must be a word that binds together such threats but it sure isn't &“conservative&” in the way Eisenhower, Reagan, or the Bushes would have understood it. For if all the corruption, lies, violence, and racism described throughout The Inflection Election were aggregated into a pointillist painting, the portrait would resemble Orbán far more than Obama. This is extremism posing as patriotism . . . whether it&’s called fascism, dictatorship, autocracy, or authoritarianism. While the country can hope that the courts will hold Trump accountable, Green concludes that crushing it in 2024 is the best way to return to a healthy two-party system where losers respect the choice of voters, like in the good old days of 1789–2020. In a likely close 2024 national contest, The Inflection Election is an entertaining and informative manifesto that will become part of this year&’s urgent political conversation. It is a one-stop primer that synthesizes fresh phrases, narratives and values to keep Democrats on offense and Trump&’s MAGA party on-the-ropes. Green&’s conclusion is that the GOP &“sounds like a casting call for the delirious jury in the classic film Idiocracy, which was supposed to be a satire on reverse Darwinism, not reality TV.&” November 5, 2024 is either/or time. This book explains why.

Infinite Greed: The Inhuman Selfishness of Capital (Insurrections: Critical Studies in Religion, Politics, and Culture)

by Adrian Johnston

Selfishness is essential to capitalism—or so both advocates and opponents claim. In Infinite Greed, Adrian Johnston argues that this consensus is mistaken. Through a novel synthesis of Marxism and psychoanalysis, he reveals how the relentless pursuit of profits is not fundamentally animated by human acquisitiveness. Instead, capitalism’s strange “infinite greed” demands that individuals sacrifice their pleasures, their well-being, and even themselves to serve inhuman capital.Johnston traces the mechanisms that compel capitalist subjects to obey the cold imperative to accumulate in perpetuity and without limits—and also without regard for the consequences for everyone and everything else. Facing crises such as spiraling wealth inequality and the profit-driven prospect of a looming ecological apocalypse, the rational self-interest of the majority would seem to dictate putting a stop to capitalist accumulation. By bringing together the Marxian critique of political economy with psychoanalytic metapsychology, Johnston shows why and how capitalism, rather than being responsive to people’s rationally selfish interests, disregards and overrides them instead.Unlike previous syntheses of Marxism and psychoanalysis, Infinite Greed pairs Freudian and Lacanian concepts with the economic heart of Marx’s historical materialism. In so doing, Johnston brings to light the complex intertwining of political and libidinal economies keeping us invested and complicit in perpetuating capitalism and its ills.

The Infernal Machine: A True Story of Dynamite, Terror, and the Rise of the Modern Detective

by Steven Johnson

&“A fast-burning fuse of a book, every page bursting with revelatory detail.&”—ERIK LARSONA sweeping account of the anarchists who terrorized the streets of New York and the detective duo who transformed policing to meet the threat—a tale of fanaticism, forensic science, and dynamite from the bestselling author of The Ghost Map Steven Johnson&’s engrossing account of the epic struggle between the anarchist movement and the emerging surveillance state stretches around the world and between two centuries—from Alfred Nobel&’s invention of dynamite and the assassination of Czar Alexander II to New York City in the shadow of World War I. April 1914. The NYPD is still largely the corrupt, low-tech organization of the Tammany Hall era. To the extent the police are stopping crime—as opposed to committing it—their role has been almost entirely defined by physical force: the brawn of the cop on the beat keeping criminals at bay with nightsticks and fists. The solving of crimes is largely outside their purview. The new commissioner, Arthur Woods, is determined to change that, but he cannot anticipate the maelstrom of violence that will soon test his science-based approach to policing. Within weeks of his tenure, New York City is engulfed in the most concentrated terrorism campaign in the nation&’s history: a five-year period of relentless bombings, many of them perpetrated by the anarchist movement led by legendary radicals Alexander Berkman and Emma Goldman. Coming to Woods&’s aide are Inspector Joseph Faurot, a science-first detective who works closely with him in reforming the police force, and Amadeo Polignani, the young Italian undercover detective who infiltrates the notorious Bresci Circle. Johnson reveals a mostly forgotten period of political conviction, scientific discovery, assassination plots, bombings, undercover operations, and innovative sleuthing. The Infernal Machine is the complex pre-history of our current moment, when decentralized anarchist networks have once again taken to the streets to protest law enforcement abuses, right-wing militia groups have attacked government buildings, and surveillance is almost ubiquitous.

The Inequality Machine: How College Divides Us

by Paul Tough

First published as The Years That Matter MostFrom best-selling author Paul Tough, an indelible and explosive book on the glaring injustices of higher education, including unfair admissions tests, entrenched racial barriers, and crushing student debt. Now updated and expanded for the pandemic era. When higher education works the way it&’s supposed to, there is no better tool for social mobility—for lifting young people out of challenging circumstances and into the middle class and beyond. In reality, though, American colleges and universities have become the ultimate tool of social immobility—a system that secures a comfortable future for the children of the wealthy while throwing roadblocks in the way of students from struggling families. Combining vivid and powerful personal stories with deep, authoritative reporting, Paul Tough explains how we got into this mess and explores the innovative reforms that might get us out. Tough examines the systemic racism that pervades American higher education, shows exactly how the SATs give an unfair advantage to wealthy students, and guides readers from Ivy League seminar rooms to the welding shop at a rural community college. At every stop, he introduces us to young Americans yearning for a better life—and praying that a college education might help them get there. With a new preface and afterword by the author exposing how the coronavirus pandemic has shaken the higher education system anew.

Inequality in Contemporary Stand-Up Comedy in the UK (Palgrave Studies in Comedy)

by Claire Sedgwick

This Pivot explores the cultural economy of comedy in the UK, looking specifically at the links between industry practices and structures and who produces comedy in the UK. The research is based on interviews with comedians in the East Midlands; significantly, this demographic has been historically under-researched in studies of precarity, where the East Midlands is typically overlooked in discussions of arts funding and access in favour of a more simplistic north/south divide narrative. Similarly, whilst there has been increased discussion of the precarity of the creative and cultural industries, as well as media articles on the difficulty of breaking into comedy as a member of a marginalised group, there has been relatively little academic research to support this. While Friedman’s work in particular has been helpful for understanding the link between comedy producers, class and taste making, there has been less attention paid to the sociologies of work within comedy. This book fillsthese gaps in research by exploring the experiences of comedians in the East Midlands, contributing to the rich body of scholarship on inequality in the cultural industries and promoting a better understanding of the impact of structural inequalities and precarity on access to the cultural industries.

Industrial Crops: Bioresources to Biotechnology

by Aliyu Ahmad Warra Majeti Narasimha Prasad

This book captures how industrial crops can be used in conventional agriculture and greener biopharming for pharmaceutical industries. Pharmaceuticals and industrial compounds are studied from the perspective of their co-existence with plant resources and byproducts. Such plant-based industrial products rely on scientific and technological breakthroughs and provide new opportunities for the agricultural sector, at the same time mitigate the risks associated with climate change. The management of the externalities and of the possible unintended economic effects that arise in this context is critical and poses difficult questions for regulators. The book also provides a review of the emerging agro-industrial biomass technology involved in conversion of most of the solid transgenic industrial crops by products such as plant oil lignocellulosic materials into liquid biobased energy-fuels. The book covers how innovative biotechnology can expand the markets for agricultural producers worldwide, reduce environmental degradation, and provide alternatives to fossil carbon-derived products and energy. Aspects of entrepreneurial biotechnology and bioprospecting are also covered.

Individual and Society - The Bondage of Conditioning

by J. Krishnamurti

The relationship between the individual and society is a dynamic interplay where each shapes the other. While society provides the framework within which individuals operate, individuals, in turn, contribute to the construction of societal structures. However, the individual is not merely a product of their environment; they possess the inherent capacity to transcend their conditioning and perceive reality independently. Thus, while society influences the individual, the individual retains the ability to break free from societal constraints and cultivate a deeper understanding of the world. In essence, the individual and society are intricately interconnected, with the potential for the individual to assert agency and autonomy in shaping their own existence.

Individual and Society: Sociological Social Psychology

by Lizabeth A. Crawford Katherine B. Novak

Unlike other texts for undergraduate sociological social psychology courses, this text presents the three distinct traditions in sociological social psychology—symbolic interactionism, social structure and personality, and group processes and structures—and emphasizes the different theoretical frameworks within which social psychological analyses are conducted within each research tradition. With this approach, the authors make clear the link between sociological social psychology, theory, and methodology. Students will gain a better understanding of how and why social psychologists trained in sociology ask particular kinds of questions; the types of research they are involved in; and how their findings have been, or can be, applied to contemporary societal patterns and problems. This new, second edition includes the latest research on topics related to current events and changing societal patterns; more detailed discussions on intersectionality, social media, and contemporary social movements; as well as a new concluding chapter that asks students to reflect on what they have learned about sociological social psychology and its applicability to contemporary social issues. Engaging exercises and group activities are also embedded within in each chapter to enhance students’ understanding of key concepts, theories, methods and research findings within the field and how they relate to everyday life.
